WELCOME TO LIBRARY SERVICES

This handbook is an effort to make you feel at ease in the library.

Hopefully, it will answer some questions you have concerning library

services and will aid you in using the library more effectively.

Remember that the library staff is here to help you, the user.

They have knowledge and understanding of the resources and materi-

als, know the organization of the material, and can help you to locate

information that is available on a subject.

The main library of the Shortwood Teachers’ college is conven-

iently located in the administrative building. The Early Childhood In-

stitute Library (ECIL), a branch of the main library, is housed in the

spacious new surroundings of the ECI building.

The Mission of the College Library

To support teaching and learning objectives by providing resources and

services that meet the educational, informational and recreational needs

of students, faculty and staff who learn from each other in this collabo-

rative environment.

Our Objectives

• To provide information which complements subjects taught.

• To encourage students and staff to continue their growth and devel-

opment through the use of the resources and services of the library.

• To instruct students in basic library skills and to assist them in mak-

ing effective use of information in many format.

• To disseminate information/materials to clients as quickly as possi-

ble

OPENING HOURS

Monday– Thursday 8:00 a.m.- 9:00 p.m.

Friday 8:00 a.m.– 5:00 p.m.

Saturday 9:00 a.m.– 3:00 p.m.

EC / Library 9:00 a.m.— 1: 00p.m.

24 hour Reading Room as well as Sunday open-ing hours are being considered.

The Online catalogue

The catalogue is use to find books located in the Shortwood Teachers’

College Library. It is a database, but online. A computer is provided to

access the online catalogue.

General Rules

• The library is a study area in which reasonable quiet is essential.

• EATING and DRINKING are prohibited.

• Large handbags and large purses are prohibited. Please place them in

the lockers that are provided.

• Return books to library when you have finished with them.

• Overdue fines are charged for each weekday beyond the due date.

When a book is overdue, a notice will be sent as a courtesy. .

• Reserve Books are “library use only”. Ask at the circulation desk for

the location of the reserve material you need.

• Children/ minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult

The Collection

The collection is comprised of books, pamphlets, journals (print and

online) and newspaper clippings. They are arranged as follows:

Departments

Reference Collection Reference department houses encyclopedias, Dictionaries, newspaper

clippings, West Indies collection and books that are heavily used and in

great demand. Materials in this section can only be used in the library

Reserved Book Collection

The reserved book collection is a collection of textbooks recommended

by lecturers. Materials in this section may only be borrowed over-

night and/or weekends

Open Stacks

Materials in this section may be borrowed for up to five days.

French, German, Italian, Japanese, Sign Language, Span-

ish. Includes dictionaries.i...

• 500 Math and Science Animals, Biology, Chemistry,

Dinosaurs, Fish, Geology, Insects, Physics, Planets, Plants

• 600 Medicine and Technology Computers, Cookbooks,

When you pull books from the shelves, please leave them on the

tables, so the staff can count them in statistics and make sure they

are returned to their proper placement.

Library Internet Use

The Internet has a wealth of information. Being an unregulated me-

dium, however, it may contain invalid, outdated or offensive material.

The library has no control of the Internet and its resources, and assumes

no responsibility for the quality, accuracy, currency, or suitability of

any Internet resource. Enjoy your exploration of the Internet, but also

remember that many times you will find the information you need in

the Library’s books, periodicals and databases.

ETHICAL USE

The Internet computers may not be used for: harassment of other users;

destruction of or damage to equipment, software, or data belonging to

the Library or other users; unauthorized copying of copyright protected

material; or accessing offensive or pornographic material which others

can view. Unethical use, or violation of the above rules for these com-

puters may result in loss of Internet Access privileges.

SEARCH TIPS

• Start your research early. If you have not finalized your topic, check to

see what is available first.

• Check in Encyclopedias for ideas to define your topic.

• Check the Reference Section to see if material is available to be copied.

• Think like a thesaurus! Try “child rearing” instead of “child raising.”

• If you are unable to find a category in a keyword search, try using

just one word. The more words you put into a search, the more lim-

ited it is.

REPROGRAPHICS

The library provides convenient photocopying (colour and black &

white) , printing and scanning facilities at a reasonable cost. Students

are required to collect photocopied materials within two hours. The

does not offer express service.

SECURITY

Valid Shortwood Teachers’ College identification or an authorization

card is required in order to access materials in the library.

Conduct

Students are expected to adhere to campus policies while using the

library. Talking quietly is permitted in the library. When in the library,

please set cell phones to vibrate or turn ringer volume down. Take or

make phone calls on the outside of the outside the library or facility .
