Why I Picked This Topic

I picked this topic because of my friend Charles that I have grown up with in church. He is 17 years old and is a senior this year at CHHS. He is fighting a big battle with this cancer right now because it has come back again.

Ortho Lymphoma

Rare cancer Ages: Seen in all ages but most common in

boys 13-19. Generally starts in lymph nodes or lymphatic

tissue. Other sites: pelvis, spine, ribs, bone marrow,

knee, shoulder girdle, and other organs.

Signs/Symptoms: fever, night sweats, weight loss, a lot of pain, and knots that are getting bigger.

A lot of people don’t think there is

anything wrong with them and that its just a cold.

There has not been a cure found yet.– Radiographs, bone scans,

chemotherapy, and surgery are all ways they find and try to get the cancer cells out of the body.

Stem Cells

Stem cells are the “building blocks” of the body.

The first stem cell based therapy was a bone marrow transplant.

Most common stem cells are adult and embryonic.

Stem cells are hard to get.

Diseases kill the cells with in the body.

Treatments for cancer kill the bad cells but also kill good ones.

Use cells from bone marrow for after chemo

Drugs are taken by the patient to prevent the body from rejecting the new bone marrow.

Strengths

Getting the information.

Coming up with ideas for my product.

Staying focused.

Getting help if I needed it.

Weakness

My paper did not save.

I had problems getting my interview done.

Trying not to get too emotional about the topic.

My topic has to do with young children and teens. So for my product I did a toy drive.

My Product

For my product I did a Toy Drive because Ortho Lymphoma is seen mostly in children. The toys I collected I took to UNC Chapel Hill to the Children’s Cancer Center

How This Has Changed My Life!

I have learned how to branch out and talk to people when I need help.

I have been able to better understand my friend’s cancer.
