THAILAND RATES A 10!Kingdom is now one of the world’s top ten CDM countries“The US Michigan State University has signed a contract worth Bt900,000 with the 40 villagers to purchase carbon credits from their 625 rai teak plantation. More than 75,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide could be captured from the smallholder agro-forestry lands in three provinces of the northeastern part of Thailand, including Sakon Nakhon, Udon Thani, and Nakhon Phanom. This contract was the country's first carbon credit sale to a foreign carbon market.” [Source:The Nation – February 2011]

“Thailand’s first umbrella CDM program will allow owners of pig farms of all sizes to benefit from the global carbon market and will help the country reduce its carbon footprint. The new program allows many small clean energy projects to come together under the umbrella of a single broader program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The World Bank will purchase up to 500,000 tons of “carbon credits” from this program over the next four years. So far, 36 pig farms in 14 provinces in the North, Northeast, Eastern and Central region have joined the program.” [Source:The World Bank – June 2009]

Clean Development Mechanism projects are an important 21st C. development and Thailand has become one of the world’s leading players. As of December 2011 the country had 155 CDM projects underway, all of which have been issued letters of approval from the Thailand Greenhouse Gas management Association (GGO). Sixty-three of the projects are registered to UNFCCC.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has approved the establishment of carbon credit funds in Thailand in order to support the development of projects for GHG emission reduction by CDM, as well as provide business operators with more

access to sources of fund and carbon credit market.
