GOAL OF
SCHOOLWIDE
ENRICHMENTMODEL2
“The Schoolwide Enrichment Model (SEM) (Renzulli, 1977; Renzulli & Reis,
1985, 1997) is widely implemented as an enrichment program used with
academically gifted and talented students and a magnet theme/enrichment
approach for all schools interested in high-end learning and developing the
strengths and talents of all students.
The major goal of the SEM is the application of gifted education pedagogy to
total school improvement. The SEM provides enriched learning experiences
and higher learning standards for all children through three goals; developing
talents in all children, providing a broad range of advanced-level enrichment
experiences for all students, and providing advanced follow-up opportunities
for young people based on their strengths and interests.
The SEM focuses on enrichment for all students through high levels of
engagement and the use of enjoyable and challenging learning experiences
that are constructed around students’ interests, learning styles, and preferred
modes of expression.”

An Overview
of SEM Enrichment Types
Type I – Expose students to topics,
issues, hobbies, persons, places
and events not normally covered in
the regular curriculum;
Type II – Planned or systematic
enrichment; developing process
skills; and
Type III – Investigative activities &
artist productions determined by the
student; the student acts as the
practicing professional.

Welcoming – Every visitor that I spoke to commented how welcomed they felt entering our
school, especially for those that visited classrooms.
Honorable – Of the 54 veterans, there were three Purple Heart recipients (military
decoration awarded to those wounded or killed while serving), three Bronze Star recipients
(military decoration for heroic service) and 23 that served in a theater of war.
Reflective - We were fortunate to hear our guests look back on their experiences in the
military and learn about how it shaped their lives forever.
Moving – No one can deny how emotionally moved they were to hear the high pitched
sounds of the bagpipes or see our students play their instruments and sing songs, or read a
poem, or fold a flag, or witness the largest salute they’ve ever seen.
Spirited – Over 700 students, staff and guests filled the gymnasium. Everyone seemed to be
engaged. Some were engaged in ways we’ll never know. Therefore, never underestimate the
impact we have on the spirit of the students that cross our paths.
