A Message from
the President
Dan Scurlock
The SGS has received a $10,000 check from the GCAGS as
matching scholarship funds. This money has been sent to The
Community Foundation of Shreveport-Bossier along with funds
received last year to set up the Harry Jarred Memorial Scholarship
Fund to aid deserving students pursue a degree in geosciences. Thanks
to all who made this possible. Donations to this or other scholarships
are always welcome.
The November speaker was Audis Byrd, who gave an excellent
and well-attended (largest turnout this year) talk
on “Waterless Frac Technology”. The speaker
for December is Laura Zahm, who will give a
talk titled “Albian Cyclic Shelf Tidal Bar
Complexes of the Upper Glen Rose ‘D’
Formation, Alabama Ferry Field”. We look
forward to a good talk and a big turnout. Please
get your reservations in early so the Petroleum
Club can have an accurate count for seating.
Morris Nichols has lined up a full slate of
speakers through May, but if you have a good suggestion for next year
(2012-13), email it to me and I will forward it to next year’s Program
Chairman.
Although there are still some members from last year that failed
to pay their dues this year, we now have more members for 2011-12
(276) than we had in 2010-11 (262).
Remember the SGS/ALTAPL Christmas Party is scheduled for
December 8 at the Petroleum Club from 5 till 8. There is no cost to
RSVP
for
December’s
meeting

attend but the Salvation Army will be collecting an unwrapped toy or a
cash donation at the door.
I did not receive any comments, suggestions or volunteers for
field trips after my comments in the November Newsletter. It seems
apparent that a field trip is not going to happen
this year, but the Board will continue to review,
discuss and plan something for next year.
Please volunteer or send comments or
suggestions via email to Dan Scurlock at
Go to the SGS website at
www.SGS1.org any chance you get. Rach el Hill is continually
improving and updating the information on the website. She also is
looking for members to submit letters to the editor for publication in
future newsletters.

Biography
Laura Zahm’s interests include
carbonate reservoir characterization
and reservoir modeling. Her research
has focused on the Cretaceous
carbonates of Central Texas and
elsewhere in the world. She has also
worked on several Permian reservoirs
in West Texas. Laura Zahm completed
her Master’s degree here at UT in 1997 and then went to work for
the Marathon Oil Technology Center from 1997-200. In 2000,
she joined the iReservoir reservoir characterization team from
2000-2003. Since that time, she has been part of the BEG at the
Houston Research Center.

Alabama Ferry Field, in Leon and Houston counties, Texas, provides an opportunity to characterize a Lower Cretaceous mixed carbonate-siliciclastic system using core and log data. The facies are represented by two end members in reservoir quality. The main reservoir facies are well-sorted, ooid grainstones to mixed-skeletal ooid
proportion of the overall rock volume. In addition, the cyclicity and stratigraphic variability cause differential fracture development within some facies related to rock strength and pore-type.
The primary focus of this study is to develop a 3D stratigraphic framework. Results include detailed information on the 3D distribution

cycle to cycle. A secondary focus is to gain a better understanding of
the genesis of this depositional system. The grainstone distribution and
depositional changes resulting in significant accumulations of organic-
rich black shales will be discussed and placed in a context to maximize
reservoir production.

In late October-early November, three geologists and friends made a geological field trip to the Burgundy, Chablis, and Champagne regions of France. We studied the Jurassic and Cretaceous rocks on which the greatest wines in the world are made, and which are knownas Smackover, Haynesville, Bossier, and Cotton Valley around theArk-La-Tex. We learned a lot about the section by studying the outcrops of the region, and we tasted the geology in the wine. All photos are by Kevin and Mary Virginia Hill.
