The New Standard for HR Introducing the new SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) and SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-

SCP) - See more here.

FOCUS ON YOU SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP are your credentials, based on the current HR landscape. This Certification is 100% focused on the competencies and knowledge all HR professionals need to lead in today’s business community. UNIVERSAL SKILLS & RECOGNITION SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) and SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) are based on a single, comprehensive SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge™ (SHRM BoCK™) and are relevant worldwide, giving professionals the recognition and flexibility to use their knowledge, skills and competencies anywhere their career takes them. COMPETENCY- & KNOWLEDGE- BASED SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP tests HR competencies as well as knowledge, and their application, to ensure the professional’s ability to demonstrate what they know, and what they can do with their knowledge in the variety of situations they encounter. DEVELOPED WITH EMPLOYERS IN MIND SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP are based on in-depth research focused on —and backed by— global employers and business leaders. They reflect what HR practitioners need to know to be leaders in their organizations and in the profession. EXPANDED ELIGIBILITY AND INCLUSIVITY SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP recognize diversity in the HR profession. The eligibility requirements minimize barriers to participation and reflect current HR roles. The exam windows provide accessibility and flexibility for all eligible professionals worldwide. In addition, the new exam is affordable, making certification attainable by more professionals. UNIVERSALLY APPLICABLE SHRM believes that HR certification must be as inclusive and diverse as the profession itself. The SHRM certification is applicable across industries, geographic borders, job responsibilities and career levels. GLOBALLY RECOGNIZED By creating a consistent certification path for HR professionals around the world, SHRM will deliver a new global standard. To ensure worldwide recog-nition of the new certification, SHRM anticipates seeking accreditation of the new certification program from the American National Standards Insti-

tute (ANSI) and/or the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).

SHRMA will be hosting a Fall Study Group for those seeking their certification. If you are at all interested in sitting for the HRCI or

SHRM Certification exam we encourage you to talk with Deborah Jeffries, our Professional Development Director about your options.

Dates, Times and Location of the Fall Study Group have not yet been set. CONTACT: [email protected] or 503-885-9815.

The two leaders of the chapter are Tyler Potter, President, and Reina Morgan, Vice President. Reina decided to become involved with SHRM in order to share her passion for the field with other students while also expanding her own knowledge of the field. The students hope the chapter at WOU will provide an opportunity for students who are interested in HR, or a related field, to build valuable connections with professionals in the area,

while enhancing their understanding of the many areas of Human Resources.

Winter Employment Law Updates

The 2015 Regular Session of the Oregon Legislative Assembly convened on January 12, 2015, and for-mally begins on February 2, 2015. In mid-December, the Oregon Legislature released plans for the 2015 Session including draft “Legislative Concepts-LC.” As anticipated, LC 1229—mandatory statewide paid

sick leave was included among the proposed legislation.

As drafted, the bill requires employers, regardless of size, to provide one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours any employee works, up to 56 hours per calendar year. Exempt employees are presumed to work 40 hours a week for purposes of sick leave accrual under the bill. The bill provides for leave incre-ments as small as one hour, for the diagnosis, care, or treatment of an employee’s own condition or that of a qualifying family member. The bill also allows employees to carry over accrued but unused sick leave, or, in the alternative, the employer may pay the employee for the unused sick time at the end of the leave year (at the employees regular rate of pay) by agreement of the employee. An employee be-comes eligible to use paid sick time on their 90th day of employment with the employer; however, the ac-crual period begins from the start of employment. This proposed bill is in line with similar city ordinances in Oregon (Portland’s Protected Sick Time Law has been effective since January 2014, and Eugene’s Sick Leave Ordinance will go into effect on July 1, 2015).

In addition to statewide mandatory paid sick-leave, we anticipate other proposed employment related

legislation may include the following:

Proposed legislation related to equal pay and wage transparency;

Proposed legislation increasing the minimum wage;

Proposed legislation related to minimum advanced notice to employees for work schedules in

certain industries;

Parental Leave for School Activities; and

Proposed revisions to Oregon Family Leave.

We will be providing more comprehensive reports and updates on proposed employment related leg-islation throughout the session. The reports will be posted on the SHRMA website under the “Legislative Update” link. However, to receive updates directly, you can email me at [email protected] to be placed on Saalfeld Griggs PC’s legislative update list serve.

The Diversity Challenge Diversity/Workforce Readiness

January 2015

By: Karen Beach, PHR

Over the holidays I spent a fantastic day on the couch glued to a cell phone app with my children, nephew and brother-in-law. What is so fantastic about being glued to your cell phone you ask? Surely had someone (maybe even you) been peering in our windows to witness nine people intensely staring at their cellular devices they would have shaken their heads, in disgust, and walked away muttering something to the effect of “people today, can’t even be in a room together without being glued to their devices.” What wasn’t obvious to any on-looker from the outside was we were intensely playing a trivia game battling amongst each other to see who would get their character rows filled before the other and have the glorious victory title of winner! I surely did not ever think about how to incorporate such fun with our family using the very devices I have had such an animosity towards, nor did I think this would lead to an entire year of a challenge for our family. (If you have teens (or maybe even a significant other) you may be able to relate a little to the fact their noses seemed buried in their device 24/7 and never wanting to talk much to you unless of course via text.) This was such a fantastic day, as we spent hours battling and sharing our questions, developing unified teams, Mom’s Marvelous Matterhorns team vs. Dad’s Disaster Driven Dynamos team, and sharing in the moments of sheer shock when we were wrong with an answer to a question! One such question really prompted our family to start looking at what we “think” vs. what is “actual”.

The question? Which city has the highest population of people of Hispanic ethnicity in the WORLD? From the choices: A. Seattle B. London C. Mexico City D. Los Angeles E. Puerto Vallarta. Well both Mom’s Marvelous Matterhorn’s & Dad’s Disaster Driven Dynamos were at a loss for what the answer really was but we just “knew” it had to be either C or E. It had to be a city from which the ethnic origin hails, right? WRONG! To our sur-prise it was D. Los Angeles.

After hearing this it wasn’t such a shock, but seriously we were still slightly dumb-founded. Later that night into dinner, our conversation veered towards this topic, our teens were inquisitive wondering how this could possibly be the correct answer. Although no-one Googled it or searched out the accuracy, we accepted it and moved on in our conversation.

The next day my second to last youngest son came downstairs with this year’s calendar in which he had searched out all of the diversity related observances he possibly could and had written them on the calendar, with a challenge to our fam-ily: Choose at least one of the observances each month to discuss, talk about what you think it is and then what it actu-ally is, at a family dinner. He was thoroughly inspired to learn to open his thoughts, seeking to learn more through one simple diversity related question, one simple day spent on our cellular devices has turned into a year of challenge for our family! From our family to yours – on the next page is just a few of the observances he found. You can use this list (or even add to it) to do your own Diversity Challenge. May this inspire you to learn something a little new and grow your diversity knowledge, who knows it may just come in handy one day in a trivia game! PS – Mom’s Marvelous Matterhorn’s were the winners!
