PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Erika J. Ernst President, SIDP

2012-2013

The mission of the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists is to promote the appropriate use of antimicrobials for the prevention and management of infectious diseases through leadership and collaboration in infectious diseases practice, education, research, and advocacy. As President it has been my priority to ensure the Society achieves its mission. I am happy to report that you have achieved our mission and so much more. Much of this work is accomplished through committees and so I would specifically like to thank the Chairs of these committees: Scott McConnell, Susan Davis, Jason Gallagher, Michael Postelnick, Katie Suda, Lynne Fehrenbacher, Russell Benefield, Kari Mergenhagen, Liz Coyle, Mark Redell, and Vanthida Huang. In addition to the committee chairs I would like to give a shout out to the other Board Members who served as liaisons to these committees: Elizabeth Hermsen, Joe Kuti, Doug Slain, Dave Bearden and Dave Ritchie. Finally I would like to thank Stephanie Bulak of EAMI for her assistance in managing the Society’s operations. It is through the members who made up each of these committees that we have planned an annual meeting to educate our members about cutting-edge research and practice. In addition, we proposed and planned educational activities with eight other organizations to provide opportunities for education of infectious diseases pharmacists. Furthermore, the Antimicrobial Stewardship Certification program gained over 200 new students and granted certification to more than 100 pharmacists. The Society has been

an advocate for ID pharmacy and antimicrobial use through the Political Advocacy Committee, signing on to statements regarding the use of antibiotics in animals and other legislation aimed at increasing funding for antimicrobial drug development and resistance. The Membership committee re-evaluated member categories and carefully reviewed the applications of all new members. The Internet committee oversaw the transition to a new website host and has worked to keep the content of our website up-to-date. The Research committee evaluated proposals and made a recommendation to the board for the Young Investigator Research Award. Several members were recognized for their contributions to clinical practice, research, and the literature through our Recognition awards committee. As you can see, we have accomplished a lot in the past year and the Society could not have done it without you. It has truly been an honor to serve the Society as President and I would like to thank you for the opportunity.

MEMBERSHIP

Member Demographics/Workplaces As of December 2013, there were 533 active members in the Society. A total of 102 new members joined over the past year. Figure 1 depicts membership growth over the last 7 years. This was the single largest annual increase since our organization’s formation. Sixty-three percent were Active Members, 17% were Associate Members, and 21% were Trainee-Associate Members.

Figure 1. New SIDP Membership 2007-2013

The following statistics were derived from our membership database; however, many members’ profiles are incomplete. We ask that all members update and complete their data this year and when your membership is renewed. There were 228 (50.3%) women and 225 (49.7%) men. Based on 490 members that indicated the state in which they practice, Illinois has the most members with a value of 45. Of 493 members who indicated their practice site, the majority of our membership is in the hospital setting followed by academia (Figure 2). Many of our members are now identifying antimicrobial stewardship as their primary interest, which may reflect the varied nature and interests involved in stewardship. The top five primary areas of professional activities identified by our members include: antimicrobial stewardship (38%), antimicrobial pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics (29%), HIV (10%), and antimicrobial pharmacology (6%).

Figure 2. Distribution of SIDP Member Practice Settings (n = 493)

Membership Publications In mid-2008, the Society implemented a “Member Accomplishments” section on the SIDP homepage. Members were asked to directly post citations of their publications (e.g., articles, books, abstracts presented), as well as awards and other achievements, directly to this section. Beginning in 2010, the Society began tracking member publications using a PubMed author search. These two sources of information are compiled quarterly and the full citations are included in the SIDP quarterly newsletters. These data provide the basis of this Annual Report summary.

For the period between January and December 2013, 322 total publications were identified from SIDP members (Figure 3). This represents a 5% decrease from last year, despite a 10% decrease in overall membership, reflecting an increase in the number of publications per SIDP member. A member was listed as first or senior (last) author on 61% of the publications appearing in 108 different journals. Approximately 50% of the peer-reviewed articles were published in ID or microbiology-related journals, followed by 30% in pharmacy, pharmacokinetic, or pharmacotherapy journals. Generally, this distribution is consistent with prior years. While the current method of capturing publications appears to be effective in capturing full articles, this method may not effectively capture book chapters, articles not indexed in PubMed, and abstracts presented at national or international meetings.

FINANCIAL REPORT

The 2013 SIDP financial report covers the time period from January 1, 2013 through December 31, 2013. The real income to SIDP in 2013 totaled $181,590.96 (Figure 1a), which included $2,319.81 from website postings, $40,335.73 from membership dues, $115,636.60 from the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, $17,177.74 from investment interest and dividends, $2,040.00 from the 2013 SIDP Annual Meeting, and $4,081.08 from miscellaneous other sources. The 2013 income was decreased by approximately $140,000 from 2012 largely due to a reduction of $70,000 from the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program and $90,000 in industry support.

In 2013, the expenses for SIDP totaled $189,078.63 (Figure 1b). The Society awarded four recognition awards (including the new Gita Patel Best Practice Award) and one research award. The details of funding for the 2103 awards are described in the corresponding section of the 2013 SIDP Annual Report. SIDP maintains investment accounts with UBS Financial Services, Inc., with a net value of $781,407.14 in the non-checking accounts as of December 31, 2013. At the conclusion of 2013, SIDP’s total assets were $928,331.57, with total liabilities of $66,670.00, including deferred dues and future payments for research grants and residency programs.
