THE WELLNESSI S S U E

EDIT NOTE

How does one de ne wellness? Is it physical health? Is it mental health? Or is it a bit of both? We routinely see references made to wellness being a “state of well-being,” or it being de ned as a “state of acceptance or satisfaction with our present condition.”

Of course, wellness and good health go hand in hand! As a state of health, wellness is closely linked to your lifestyle and the choices you make. Each individual has a responsibility to themselves to provide for the essentials of good health – proper weight control, good nutrition, physical activity and exercise, and controlling of health risk factors, spa treatments and massages, healthy travel and healthy eating habits.

All said and done, it is the integration of the spirit, body and the mind; and the understanding that everything we do, feel, think and believe has a direct impact on your state of health and well-being that makes health and wellness such an important aspect of our lives.

Laughter is also one of the key requirements to keep yourself healthy. After all, laughter is the best medicine, right? So keeping in the spirit of things, we decided to put together a few unconventional health quotes for you to enjoy:-

The word aerobics comes from two Greek words: aero, meaning “ability to,” and bics, meaning “withstand tremendous boredom. - Dave Barry

I went on a diet, swore off drinking and heavy eating, and in fourteen days I lost two weeks. - Joe E. Lewis

Muscles come and go; ab lasts. - Bill Vaughan

All the things I really like to do are either illegal, immoral, or fattening. - Alexander Wolcott

To be stupid, sel sh, and have good health are three requirements for happiness, though if stupidity is lacking, all is lost. - Gustave Flaubert

LAUGH, LIVE, STAY FIT

KEEP SMILING, KEEP THOSE SPIRITS UP AND SWEAT IT

sport thisTrue to its origins, Chanel Eau Extrême is a direct offshoot of Allure Homme Sport but with a decidedly more aromatic personality. Mint kicks things off from the very rst scent, along with a refreshing pulsation upheld by

Sicilian Mandarin rind and Moroccan Cypress. Discreet but present, Clary Sage adds a touch of warmth, an almost amber plant-like sensuality. Behind the rustic array lies a White Musk accord selected for its cottony soft and subtly animal intonations. And above all, the round, almondy note of Tonka Bean is used to create intensity. One thing is for certain: the Allure Homme Sport Eau Extrême Eau De Toilette Concentrée gives a fresh boost on the skin.

race track performanceIt is the sportiest Porsche Panamera ever to hit the road – the Panamera GTS and is now available in Bahrain. Behbehani Brothers introduced the head-turning variant of the hugely successful Panamera at Moda Mall in the presence of local media and guests recently. The Panamera GTS delivers race track performance - with a striking engine sound that turns heads - yet also offers the space and comfort of a four-seater Gran Turismo. Featuring a modi ed 4.8L naturally aspirated V8 engine, which delivers a blistering 430 hp at 6,700 rpm, the Panamera GTS trumps the engine in its Panamera S/4S sister models by some 30 hp. Maximum torque is also increased by comparison, from 500Nm to 520Nm.

The experience of entering Adel Al-Abbasi’s studio is like Charlie discovering Willy Wonka's chocolate factory for the very first time. Or perhaps that of a family holiday in a faraway Candy-land because Adel, myself, Adel's three children, and the five photographers present were playing, tinkering and taking pictures of everything and anything for the three hours or so duration of the interview. There

wasn't a piece of Adel's work, be it sculpture or painting, that wasn't moved around or left untouched.

The studio, ten years in the making, is a studio, library, café and office all at once. It sits on the top floor of his residence, like a temple, closer to God. And, atop, two separate stairwells, with one leading into Adel’s home and another leading out into the garden and the rest of the world. Quite fitting for the location of one’s creations; in between one’s inner and outer home. It is the culmination of a vision for a space where his art could freely explode out of his imagination onto the physical plane.

This was not always the case for Adel. Having spent eight years in the US to pursue a degree in Business Administration, the student life and smaller living space did not encourage him to paint. Instead, he spent those years in somewhat of a cocoon stage; visiting museums, absorbing, learning, drawing and doodling. Doodling, in particular, is something Adel has always done – nonstop. His doodles are his brainstorming in process and simultaneously works of art in and of themselves. He even exhibited a selection of his doodles as part of Al Riwaq Art Space’s Alwan 338 last March.

Adel is of the belief that people are born as artists; it is a skill one is born with, but one that needs to be polished and developed. Having gone to a technical high school to study diesel engineering, he learned plenty of useful skills for the creative mind. As part of the orientation, he learned carpentry, technical drawing, welding and perspective geometry, all of which would later come in useful as he settled into his artistic self. He also spent six months in Japan, where he pursued various workshops in the Japanese arts during his time off from his diploma in Economic Development.

While he was born with the ability to paint and would create his own “gallery” by hanging up his paintings all over his parents’ house as a child, he did not pursue art professionally until after his return from the US and Japan. It was then that his art moved from being largely

Nadia Muijrers spends a colourful afternoon with Adel Al-Abbasi’s studio along with his children and discovers that art is all about reveling in your passions…

confined to his imagination onto the canvas, and when the search for his artistic identity began. As a student, Adel’s work started off being rooted in idealistic causes and beliefs. His early work belonged to the surrealist realm, and has over the years transformed towards a more expressionist form. He feels his paintings may be shifting again nowadays, towards the abstract, but he lets his art lead his way naturally.

To Adel, art is a spiritual practice of prayer and contemplation. Herein lies the significance of his having a library and studio in one. In approaching his art, his process starts with an idea that manifests out of the subconscious, his inner feelings. This is the nature of his doodles, which create themselves spontaneously at any time of day and at any place. The margins of books and post-it pads by the office phone were made for such creations! After an idea strikes, he moves on to studying the concept on hand and the history and philosophy behind it. Adel researches his ideas until he is satisfied with the concept and until he settles on how to convey his message to the world.

Artists vary in their willingness to explain their work. Some are of the belief that art is art in and of itself and is up to the observer to interpret regardless of what it may mean to them, whereas others like to explain their work. Adel belongs to the latter camp; his art is always carrying a message that is of importance to him and which he seeks to share with observers and appreciators of his work.

This artistic mission was first defined at a turning point in his life, when a fellow colleague at the Arab Banking Corporation gifted him with a book that opened Adel’s eyes to the world of modern art. In Concerning the Spiritual in Art, the author and painter Wassily Kandinsky highlights the spiritual forces that reside in the authentic artist and his art. Credited with painting the first purely abstract works and a pioneer in defining abstract theory, Kandinsky considered artistic expression an “inner necessity”, and that the mission of the artist is to evoke a spiritual resonance in the viewer, painting and artist. This ability of art to carry a message and as a means of communication was perhaps best captured in Adel’s life when he was hospitalised for 45 days in Japan. Unable to speak Japanese, his paintings became a tool through which he communicated to hospital staff. The bitterness of hospitalisation and a time when he could do little other than paint was sweetened by the recognition of art as a universal language and emotion.

In the mid 1990s, Adel started participating in collective exhibitions, winning him the first prize 'Al Dana' in the Annual Bahrain Art Exhibition in 2011 for his brass water tap sculptures, 'The Ascent of Water'. Earlier this year, he also won an appreciative award for his two steel sculptures titled 'Woman, Fertility and Knots'. He has yet to hold his own solo exhibition, but has plans for this in the future. Although his son and two daughters are probably his closest students and biggest fans, the youngest of them claims her father is not a real artist. He is not famous the world over, you see. So Adel will have to do something about that.

His current projects include sculptures to be exhibited in the open air. Adel is of the firm belief that art is not a luxury, but a work of beauty that every person has a right to see and enjoy. In a world full of visual pollution, he hopes his sculptures will play a part in creating a beautiful visual environment for the Bahraini public. So far, he has exhibited two 20 foot steel sculptures and three smaller ones (6 feet) in Adliya as part of Alwan 338 which have received positive feedback. And there is plenty more in the making.

“Poetry is the most beautiful form of self expression – something I could not live without. Whenever something moves me, or whenever I’m trying to

come to terms with something, I inevitably put it into verse.”

The year 2011 marked the birth of the Bahrain Writers’ Circle and alongside it The Second Circle poetry group. For me, it marked the birth of a series of why-nots that have continued well into 2012. This year’s Summer Equinox, on June 21st, will mark the culmination of the poetic journey of a group of strangers in an outdoor poetry festival titled 'The Colours of Life.'

The Second Circle is the largest poetry group in the Kingdom of Bahrain with 44 members, approximately one quarter of which is Bahraini. The group has the honour of being invited by The Ministry of Culture to host an evening of local and international poetry presentations under the Direction of Bahrain’s pre-eminent western poet, David Hollywood, and with the participation of none other than…myself.

Writing and reciting poetry is something I never imagined myself doing prior to a few short months ago. Somehow I ended up being a part of the melting pot of talented poets that will be performing during this month of June, which has been dedicated to poetry by the Manama Arab Capital of Culture 2012. Newly converted to being a strict follower of my own curiousity, poetry has been one of the stepping-stones along this path. One day I decided to attend a poetry workshop hosted by The Second Circle just to try something new, and by the end of the night I had signed on to participating in a poetry festival without ever having written any poetry. A why-not attitude can get you into all sorts of trouble!

Over the course of a few short months, I was surrounded by a variety of poets from all

walks of life and experience. We inspired each other, introduced ourselves and our poetry to each other, and somewhere in the middle of that our poetry festival took a life of its own. Altogether we are 15 poets from 10 countries (with possibly a few more) who will be reciting close to 60 poems across all spectrums of mood and perception on the theme of 'The Colours of Life'. Every poem that

is to be read has been written by the person who will be performing it, most of which will be in English, with roughly a third of the poems in Arabic.

Writing is often an incredibly personal affair, perhaps even more so in the case of poetry. As I look at the group of poets I have come to enjoy sharing my Tuesday evenings with, I realise how little I know about the lives of most of them. And yet, their poetry has given me insight into their multifaceted talents as well as some of their most difficult struggles and deepest dreams. That is one of the wonderful discoveries I have made through poetry; the question of what truly defines knowing a person. Is it what job they have? Where they come from? Their marital status, age,

hobbies, likes and dislikes? Or does knowing someone have more to do with having insight into their inner most selves? It seems to me the latter, and our poetry evenings have given each of us just that; glimpses into each other’s worlds. Amidst all that, however, every week we were also reminded of our duty to entertain the audience that would honour us with

their presence. It was instilled in us that the festival was not just about sharing our thoughts and writing with the audience but to - first and foremost - ensure they are enjoying themselves in our company. And so with every week, we exchanged ideas, developed our skills in terms of voice and movement on stage and cross-read each other’s work.

Keeping in mind the fact that our group of poets range from experienced to inexperienced writers, we also varied immensely with regards to our experience on stage. To some,

being on stage is a piece of cake, while for others, merely attempting to establish eye contact with the audience is the stuff of nightmares. There’s nothing like the mutual facing of fears on stage to make a group of people comfortable with each other.

To me, 'The Colours of Life' poetry festival marks a serendipitous opportunity and growing experience. On behalf of the entire cast, we hope you will attend the event and enjoy our performances against the backdrop of the sea and the Bahrain Fort lit up against the night sky. The event will be air-conditioned.The Colours of Life Poetry Festival, will be held on June 21, 7.30pm at Bahrain Fort. METEORIC RISEThe story of Roger Dubuis is anything but ordinary...

Someone once said that each of us has a personal calling that's as unique as a fingerprint - and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others in the form of service, working hard, and also allowing the energy of the universe to lead you.

The success story of Roger Dubuis is exactly that. It is the passion and personal calling of two exemplary men, one a talented master watchmaker and the other a brilliant designer. Established in 1995, the company originated from a decisive encounter between watchmaker Roger Dubuis and designer and entrepreneur Carlos Dias.

THE HEART OF FINE WATCHMAKINGThere can be no fine watchmaking without complicated mechanical movements. And the only way to propose original calibres is to master production; in other words, to be at the head of the most integrated manufacturing facilities possible. It took the company just four years to achieve this. The manufacturing structure was fully in place by 1999.

Six years after spreading its wings, in 2001 in Meyrin-Geneva, Roger Dubuis embarked on the construction of an avant-garde building for the company’s headquarters, integrated production facilities and offices. As both success and the number of staff grew, the first extension was added four years later, bringing the total size of the Manufacture to 14,500sqm, and an impressive fleet of 120 machines. Ladies, and gentlemen, the brand had finally arrived in the world of fine watchmaking. And, what an arrival!

SEAL OF PERFECTIONIn 2003, the capacity to manufacture in-house the balance and spring – then an exceptional feat – marked a fundamental stage. Henceforth, Roger Dubuis could produce every movement part in complete independence. In April 2006, six new movements were presented at Geneva’s Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH), three of them for the first time. They were fitted mainly in the Excalibur models, one of the brand’s flagship collections, and bring the number of movements manufactured to 28, each of which is hallmarked with the Poinçon de Genève (See box). In 2007 an exhibition organised at the SIHH displayed all 28 movements, thereby demonstrating the brand’s exceptional heritage. Year 2008 saw the launch of the Kingsquare collection and Roger Dubuis inclusion into the Richemont luxury group.

The Innovation MarqueInnovation drives creation at Roger Dubuis.

This determination to explore new horizons and

push back boundaries has produced important

technical advances. The specialities that now

distinguish production by Manufacture Roger

Dubuis include Tourbillon and double tourbillon,

Instantaneous in-line perpetual calendar, Micro-

rotor and double micro-rotor and Contemporary

skeleton movements.

RAISING THE BAR Renowned for their powerful design, the Excalibur, EasyDiver, KingSquare, GoldenSquare and La Monégasque collections integrate the defining features of the brand. Voluminous cases with transparent backs, imposing crowns, stylised Roman numerals, three lugs to secure the strap to the case, and the tourbillon cage in the form of a Celtic cross are all hallmarks of a Roger Dubuis watch. Echoing the creative aesthetics of Roger Dubuis timepieces, the Manufacture has proved remarkably dynamic in developing an exceptional portfolio of thirty-one mechanical movements in fifteen years, from a simple self-winding movement to a grande complication calibre.

In 2009, the brand launched an extensive programme to further reinforce its in-house quality and control procedures – beyond those imposed by the Poinçon de Genève – that would elevate its timepieces to new standards of quality in avant-garde Fine Watchmaking. Rest, as the cliché goes, is history. The Roger Dubuis tale of success is something that legends are made of. Sparta’s favourite warrior and a friend of the brand put it best when he visited the manufacture recently. He said, “Watchmaking is just like the cinema, it hides a precise mechanism which must then generate emotion. The world of Roger Dubuis, the arrival of its collections, like spaces of freedom, perfectly matches my principles. You need to take chances in life and always push yourself.”

Over fifteen years, the brand has shown remarkable creativity, unfailing audacity, expertise that speaks for itself and excellence every step of the way. Building on an exclusive global sales network, it continues with its original brand of technically outstanding, aesthetically stunning timepieces to further surprise and seduce admirers and connoisseurs of avant-garde watchmaking.

The RD WorldsThe four different ‘fantasy worlds’, introduced at

SIHH last year, are based on the RD principle of

extravagant design and incredible mechanics.

These four different styles include Excalibur –

the world of the warrior; La Monegasque – the

world of the player; Pulsion for the adventurer;

the Velvet for the divas. The four worlds draw on

new technologies and address different target

groups, but the underlying principle remains

the same: combining the best of differentiated

design and state-of-the art movements.

The Poinçon de GenèveThe city of Geneva had already developed a long

tradition of goldsmithing and jewellerymaking

when watchmaking began there in the sixteenth

century. This burgeoning industry was heir to

the re ned workmanship and love of beauty of

Geneva’s goldsmiths. Thus watches and their

movements were crafted as though they were

jewels. The desire for absolute perfection and

attention to the smallest detail, matched by the

highest degree of mechanical precision and

expertise, forged the reputation for excellence

that Geneva’s watches took out into the world.

The Poinçon de Genève came into effect in

1886. Conferred on a handful of manufacturers

by the State of Geneva, it is the of cial guarantee

that the watch’s mechanical movement was

hand-made, assembled and adjusted in Geneva,

and the assurance that it meets with the highest

standards of horological craftsmanship.

Still today, the Poinçon de Genève remains the

preserve of just a few ne watch manufactures

in Geneva. Furthermore, Roger Dubuis is one

of those whose movements are all, without

exception, certi ed by the Poinçon de Genève.

Island AdventureLocated off the east coast, just a 10 minute journey away, Al Dar Islands provide the nearest island getaway in Bahrain. March 2012 saw the opening of six exclusive, private chalets so

Samantha Holloway went to discover what they, and the islands, have to offer

PLACES

Page 33: signaturebahrain_june_12

Not so long ago, Al Dar Islands were nothing but a sweep of sand barely protruding above the waters of the Persian G u l f . D r e d g i n g

of the Sitra channel provided the raw material to make the islands a permanent fixture, albeit a rather small one at only one kilometre from one end to the other.

A short boat trip from the picturesque Sitra Fisherman’s Port and you arrive at the southern part of the main island. This area of Al Dar is open to the general public and boasts a restaurant, bar, playing area and a secure beach with all the necessary facilities you would expect.

Beyond the public area you pass through a gate and enter into the more exclusive north Al Dar. It is this area that has undergone a transformation this year with the completion of the first phase of a four stage development plan, a plan that is ultimately intended to culminate in the building of 30 individual chalets.

Following the gentle curve of the path towards the chalets, you pass five palm covered, double decker beach huts. These look like a great fun place to hang out with friends or family! Each hut is situated on the beach, close to the water and can be hired for the day. There is plenty of shaded space for relaxation, a top deck for sunbathing and you can even take your own provisions for a small fee and enjoy a barbecue right there on the beach.

Beyond the beach huts are five cabanas also available for hire. The cabanas offer covered, comfortable double beds with plump cushions which allow you to relax in the shade whilst watching the world go by.

North Al Dar has a separate secure beach set apart from the southern area, and on

the final sweep of this beach you find the recently completed single storey chalets. There are six chalets in total – four with one double bedroom, 1 with two double bedrooms and 1 with two double bedrooms and a twin bedroom.

Each chalet has a seaview and is furnished with its own veranda overlooking the water’s edge, with the largest chalet possessing a more secluded veranda and an inviting outside jacuzzi offering panoramic views of the sea. Additional guests can be catered for in each chalet using the lounge areas enabling groups of 6, 8 or 12 to share the same accommodation.

Upon entering the chalets you are immediately struck by the cool brightness of the spacious lounge areas and your eyes are drawn to the beautiful beamed ceilings that run throughout the chalets. The bedrooms are airy, calm and tastefully decorated in a simple style with all the furnishings you could require. The bathrooms are large, modern and equipped with double showers. For those who can’t bear to be parted from the modern world, internet connection and televisions are available in every chalet and film screenings can be arranged which even include popcorn and drinks!Guests of the chalets may use all of Al Dar Island’s facilities but for those staying on the north of the main island there is a separate bar and cosy restaurant with outside seating and cool inside areas where you can enjoy a range of international dishes from 9am to 10pm, followed by a shisha. There are a lot of grilled food choices available and it’s worth watching out for weekend specials that often include local seafood specialities. Prices are reasonable for both food and drinks but, if you prefer, you may bring your own supplies for a corkage fee payable per person.

If dozing on the beach with a good book is not for you, there are plenty of activities

to entice you into action. Al Dar Islands are famous for their pearl diving trips and this is their most popular excursion, especially since you are allowed to keep any pearls you find! There are also dolphin watching and fishing trips, tours to nearby deserted islands where you can stop for a picnic, snorkelling outings that include plunging into the waters surrounding the Al Magsoos wreck and rowing and peddle boats for cruising off shore. And if this is not enough there is an array of game activities including volleyball - both on land and in the water –football and treasure hunts.

One of the most exciting prospects for Al Dar Islands is the development of a fish and coral habitat in a purpose built lagoon on the east side of the island. In the near future, reef balls will be placed here to encourage the growth of coral and create a protected marine habitat for a variety of fish species. Once the habitat is established, there are plans to introduce a snorkel route so that visitors may enjoy and observe the marine life.

Al Dar Islands have enjoyed an increase in popularity this year with visitors coming from all over the region. Fridays are particularly busy and reservations are a must to avoid disappointment. The current sea curfew around Bahrain affects arrival and departure times but boats run frequently to the mainland.

If I was to make one criticism it would be that the islands would benefit from some aesthetic improvements but nonetheless they offer a fabulous experience for the visitor whether they decide to just come for the day or take advantage of the charming chalet accommodation and spend the night - or even a week!

Al Dar Islands are open every day except Monday from March to December but are closed for Ramadan. For more information on prices and activities please visit www.aldarislands.com or call +973 17704600.

STEVE HARVEY, WELLNESS MANAGER AT SIX SENSES ZIGHY BAY, ON TIPS TO MAINTAIN A HEALTHY MIND AND BODY…

INVEST TIME, ENERGY

Staying mentally and physically fit takes work and requires an investment of time and energy. One way to ensure that you maintain a balance between your emotional and physical wellness is to set goals for yourself that are in alignment with your hierarchy of values. If you look closely you will discover that you always find the time, energy and money to do that which is high on your values. Below are ten tips for a healthy body and mind.

EAT HEALTHY Well nourished bodies are better prepared to cope with stress. Start each day with breakfast, preferably whole grain cereals and fruit and maintain balanced, nutritious meals throughout the day. Limit caffeine and sugars in your diet. Drink 8 glasses of water a day. There's something mystical about water; it helps us make transformations that alter our entire physical, mental and spiritual outlook.

MEDITATE Take time to be still, how else can you receive? Relax into the quietness within yourself where you feel as if external thoughts or activities are no longer relevant. The unique state of restful alertness gained during meditation promotes health by reducing

activation of the sympathetic nervous system – which in turn dilutes the blood vessels and reduces stress hormones, such as adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol.

PERFORM RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS We feel greater self-worth and more successful when we provide services for others. There's a touch of the Good Samaritan in all of us, therefore, there is wisdom in setting aside special time in our daily routines for doing something that helps another person. Doing things for others is a great tonic when you’re feeling down. Helping a friend, family or a community organization can make you feel included and empowered.

PRACTICE YOGA The benefits of yoga are extensive. Not only does yoga affect the physical aspect of the body, it addresses the mind and spirit as well. Through the practice of yoga, we become aware of the interconnectedness between our emotional, mental and physical levels. New research done by Ohio State University suggests a regular practice of yoga may lower an inflammatory protein that is normally linked to aging and stress.

LAUGH Nothing makes you feel better about yourself or the world around you than a good laugh. It’s great medicine, especially if you can learn to laugh at yourself. Laughter can be very therapeutic so try to incorporate laughter into your day.

MAKE TIME FOR FUN Make time for leisure activities that bring you joy, whether it be reading, watching a movie, connecting with others or taking a bath. Your body needs time to take a break from your responsibilities and recharge.

IDENTIFY AND QUESTION the thoughts that cause you stress using ‘The Work of Byron Katie’. The Work is a way to first identity, and then question the thoughts that cause you stress. It is simply a set of questions that you can ask regarding any stressful thought.

Here Are The Four Questions and Turnarounds:

1. Is it true?2. Can you absolutely know it’s true?

3. How do you react when you believe that thought?4. Who would you be without that thought?Turnarounds: Could the opposite be as true?

INCORPORATE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Keeping your body active and physically strong provides benefits for your mental well-being as it plays a role in reducing and preventing stress. Remember to make time for yourself. Aim for 30 minutes of exercise three times a week.

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS each night and end your day with thanks. Faster than any state of mind, gratitude can transform stress into success.

GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP Besides exercising and eating well, it’s important to get a good night’s sleep, preferably eight hours of un-interrupted sleep. Deep restorative sleep allows us to repair and regenerate and recharge. Sleep is a universal prerequisite to health and happiness

Steve Harvey is a deeply gifted holistic healer, energy therapist, and life and relationship coach

Nothing is more attractive than having good skin. A natural healthy glow is something that can light up your aura and make you feel good. In general your health is a measure of how well you take care of yourself and the good news is that this part is your responsibility and cannot always be blamed on your genes! So what are the small things that give big results for your mind body and soul? Here are my little beauty secrets!

SWEATSweating cleans out the pores, gets rid of blockages, and gets things moving. You can cheat and go for a sauna, or steam, or you can jog, or do some serious yoga! I have listed them in the order of discipline. Jogging doesn’t need as much discipline as a good yoga workout, so jog on lazy days with very good music. If you never jogged before, do it for 10 min at the end of your walk, and then increase to 15min, then finally to 20. A good hour of yoga is great for the whole body and will give all your organs a good massage.

LAUGHDo stop and smell the roses and have a good laugh. There is a time for discipline and a time for play. Try to get the balance right, because we need both for our fulfillment. It’s always good to have mind body soul fulfillment to get that glow!

EAT OUTSIDENature has a way of automatically relaxing us, so it’s nice to set your dinner table outside as much as possible with soft natural light and add candle light! It will help you unwind, spend time with the people you love, and bring a lot of joy, therefore good health!

SUPPLEMENTSSupplements are a very pro-active thing to do but before purchasing anything, try to have a very colorful diet of vegetables and salad, some raw foods, cooked meats, good honey, royal jelly and fresh green juices. I love adding ginger to orange juice with parsley (lots of vitamin C for a real proper kick). Then add

supplements as a good nutritionist advices you. A good diet can really help with healthy hair, and glowing skin.

SALAD DRESSINGA trick of mine is to rotate salad dressings. I love luxury oils, as most of you might already know, and I love sharing their usefulness. Try fresh sesame oil with ginger, lime, and chilli, or organic argan oil with lemon and honey, organic walnut oil with sherry vinegar, and of course good olive oil with balsamic. All delicious ways to get glowing skin, and have a culinary adventure at the same time!

TRIM YOUR HAIROk, this can be considered a myth to some, but from my experience I always get a glow after a hair trim. Its so weird but trimming the hair can help skin glow! I don’t mean cut your hair uncomfortably short, or radically change your style, just get it trimmed regularly because its not good to keep the dead ends there, its like a form of decay! This is an old wives tale that I truly believe in because I treat hair just like plants!

ORAL HYGIENE FOR OVERALL HEALTHEating too many processed and packaged foods can upset the entire hormonal system, making your body acidic and healthy tooth decay. Keep a strong mineral rich diet with good quality broth - don’t use processed stock cubes! So you can re-mineralise teeth and overall vitality!

SLEEPThere is nothing better than good quality down time and relaxation. A good night's sleep is precious, treat it like a sacred ritual, and wind down your day with less technology. Try to stay away from the TV, i-pads and laptops one hour before you go to sleep.

ANTI INFLAMMATIONSkin inflammation is something that is inevitable with a little bit of stress, so I encourage a beauty routine that is extremely holistic and natural. At Green Bar we source

Green Bar was founded in 2006 by HH REEM AL KHALIFA. Reem created the brand

the best therapy grade rosewater, and pure botanical cold pressed oils making it a very effective yet non-intrusive approach to skin care. It is calming, and this is where most of the curing process actually happens, and that’s why people see results in their skin and start to look healthy!

TRY TO GET IN TUNE WITH THE SEASONSExperiencing and embracing the seasons makes us celebrate life more and be present. Its nice to absorb some sunshine in the summer giving your body all the full spectrum light it deserves to keep functioning, and its nice in winter to let the cold air wake you up and envelope your whole body.

NADA JAWAHERY SAYS THE BEST WAY TO MANAGE YOUR WEIGHT IS TO EAT WHAT YOU WANT ... TO A DEGREE…

EAT WELL, STAY FIT

Ever been on a fad diet? Or looked up diet information online? You can find a host of advisers telling you what to eat and what not to eat. In truth, do fast food and sweets directly turn to fat in our bodies? Do we have to stop eating bananas because they are “fattening”? The best way to manage your weight is to eat what you want ... to a degree. Anything in excess will turn to weight gain -“healthy” and “unhealthy” food. Sweets and cookies can make up a good part of a balanced diet if you eat them in moderate amounts. Calories are calories are calories. Scientific studies show that eating calories in excess amounts will cause weight gain, not the type of food eaten. However, cookies are high in energy, and if you are not an active person, it would be wise to keep them to a limit. Also, the statement “eat what you want”, refers to the three meals

a day until you are comfortably full, and not to a 24-hour food splurge; “eating until you feel you will explode”. So portion control is important.Eating healthier foods will help make managing your weight much easier. They are lower or moderately high in calories compared to very sugary and fatty foods. Healthier foods include: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low fat dairy, and lean meats. Fats are an important part of our diet as well, but we need them in small quantities. The best fats come from nuts, oily fish such as mackerel, and vegetable oils.

Fitness complements good nutrition for good health. Exercise helps burn off the extra calories and balance nutrition, while promoting strong bone density, lowering

cholesterol, toning up your physique, and improving blood sugar levels. It is better to start out slow if you are a beginner, and gradually build up your fitness and add on the minutes to your workouts with time.

If you find that you have gained five kilos, it is recommended that you re-assess your diet and exercise routine and make some changes to stop the weight gain. Managing your weight will be a lot easier if you catch it in the early stages, before you’ve put on too much.

When Yoga (which means union) was developed in the India over 4,000 years ago, it aimed to introduce a practice that would bring man to unite with God, bring the will of man to be that of God, to harmonise mind, body and soul and to unite all beings in compassion and understanding of interconnectedness.

As the teachings of Yoga moved from the East to the West, from the ancient to the modern, and from traditional to entertainment, it also moved from the subtle to the mundane, from the essence to the crust.

Yoga is NOT those gymnastic moves you see on the mat. This is one of the eight limbs of yoga known as Asana (or seat). The Yoga Sutras speak of the asanas amongst other concepts: the ethics we live by, the technology of the mind, concentration, control of the breath and much more. Can you become enlightened just because you mastered a headstand? Maybe, maybe not.

Don't get me wrong, yoga asanas are great,

they have the obvious benefits of muscle flexibility and strength, the increased bone density, the massaging of internal organs, increased hard tissue strength and the balancing of glandular function. They also have more subtle benefits such as opening the energy channels, aligning the chakras, awakening psychic centers and expanding the life force energy (prana).

What I guess I'm trying to say is…what the asana will add to your life depends on many things. Firstly where is your practice coming from? What's your intention? Is it pure? Are you practicing because you want wellbeing, in your body, mind, emotions and soul, because you want to grow and become better? Or are you competing with yourself? Or worse, with others?

The second thing to think about is are you using the lessons you learn on the matt, off the mat? For example, we learn balancing poses in Yoga so that we learn to stay focused enough in our minds to react to challenges that life

throws our way, we also learn to get back up from every fall. We learn to consciously relax into our stretches by letting go of labels, mind chatter and judgment and by directing our awareness and breath into the resistance we feel. That in turn helps us deal with our issues, develop stamina and endurance for our lives.Last but not least is mindfulness. Through yoga, you can learn to be present in your practice, shedding away everything outside of the current moment, outside of the breath, enough to capture each thought and emotion as it arises, look it in the eye, examine how true it is, then decide to let it go. It teaches you to filter away anything that's not useful in your thought pattern. A very handy skill to have off the mat!

Another perk of the yoga asana practice? When the yogis developed the poses they named them after everything, from Gods and heroes, to plants, birds, quadrupeds and aquatic animals. This gets you to look at all beings equally, with a loving eye that realizes that we all breathe the same universal spirit.

YES, YOGA IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH, BUT IT’S MORE THAN JUST AN EXERCISE FOR FLEXIBLE PEOPLE, SAYS WEAM ZABAR

Sharon Linde is a BA Physical Education graduate and a qualified personal trainer with 26 years experience. She has trained a host of clients in countries ranging from South Africa to Dubai. Now settled in Bahrain, Sharon offers group and individual personal training to clients of all fitness levels and has established a loyal fan base in the Kingdom.“We all exercise in different ways and different methods suit various personalities and body types” says Sharon “and whilst most gyms offer comprehensive induction sessions upon joining, the majority of them fail to follow your progress” she adds. Sharon feels that advice that would enhance your fitness development and improve the efficacy of your workout is often sadly missing.

Sharon believes that there are 10 things a gym doesn’t tell you that would ensure that you maximise the impact of your exercise regime. Some you may know, others might make you think. So take note fitness fiends!!;

DON’T DO TOO MUCH TOO SOONAnd don’t start with exercises too difficult for your current fitness level. Too many people hit the gym with dreams of obtaining a perfect body in a short space of time. You cannot lose 30lbs in 30 days! Set realistic goals and tailor your fitness regime to suit your current fitness level. You can always adapt it as you progress

DON’T OVER EXERCISESuccessful exercisers realise the importance of balance and that more is not always better. Reduce intensity or frequency if necessary and ensure you have rest days.

PURCHASE YOUR OWN HEART RATE MONITORAnd then USE it! You will find it is a great training tool that assists in communication between your body and you. Cardio training is much more efficient when you know how hard to push yourself – by training at a certain heart rate and at the level you have to be in order to maintain an endurance pace.

MIX UP CARDIO TRAININGDoing an hour on the cardio machines is NOT going to burn those calories as effectively as doing 20 minute cardio mixed with bodyweight training. It is vitally important to train the body in such a way that your body’s metabolism is increased so that you burn calories while you are sleeping! Cardio training on its own does not do this. More muscles worked burn more calories!

CROSS TRAININGCross training is vital for keeping alive the interest and for seeing great results sooner than expected. Do not be afraid to try out the classes offered and if you are doing only classes try the circuit twice a week for more muscle loading. Get into that swimming pool as aqua resistance training does wonders for muscle toning.

GET AWAY FROM THE SCALESGet body fat percentage tests done as they show your improvement more accurately - you may be adding muscle mass to your weight but burning body fat and yet the scale doesn’t budge! Also, track your body measurements at your hips, waist and thighs. And never underestimate the importance of improved physical and mental well being.

EAT!Yes, you heard right! Do not starve yourself because you want to lose weight. You will only slow down the metabolism and burn fat even slower. Eat for energy while energy burnt makes you eat! But here’s the catch – eat healthy – burgers don’t count as food!

EAT PROTEIN REGULARLY Hard worked muscles cry out for protein and if they do not get it you will have continual muscle pain because the muscles are not repairing. Eat the carbs too – but stick to the healthy ones.

CHANGE YOUR PROGRAMME REGULARLYWe are not robots that like to do the same thing over and over again. Make sure your programme is target driven so you know when you have reached a milestone in your training and also make it hard enough to keep you striving for that target.

DOING 1000 AB EXERCISES A DAY DOES NOT GIVE YOU A BEAUTIFUL SIX PACK! Burning the fat on top of the six pack with cross training and using the CORE all the time while training will show the hidden treasure with perseverance, dedication and commitment!

Why not apply some of the above to your current fitness regime and see if you notice a difference? Take these tips on board and you may find yourself on the way to your perfect body!

DESSANGENestled in the centre of Adliya, Dessange brings the tradition of beauty to Bahrain with a touch of French air. This state of the art facility provides treatments and services in a luxurious setting, dominated by the principles of hygiene and cleanliness. As soon as you enter the light and airy reception area, Dessange Spa entices you to relax, rejunvenate and unwind as it gently wraps you in the magical atmosphere and ensures an immediate sense of peace and tranquillity.

The spa offers a wonderful array of exclusive treatments using the nest French products and has a number of signature treatments available. We have opted for the Dess’Lift 3D Facial designed to wake up the complexion and eliminate a tired look.

This amazing facial begins with a soothing double cleanse using very soft and creamy products that smell delightful. The cleanse is followed by a gentle steam which opens the pores in preparation for a thorough exfoliation with gentle microbeads. Then comes the treatment with the unique Dess’Lift machine. The machine is silent and delivers tiny electric currents through two sponges. The sponges are worked slowly and gently around the contours of the face and produce a tingly, although not unpleasant, sensation which is absolutely painless. The Dess’Lift machine has two cycles – Detoxi cation and Toni cation – and produces a signi cant muscle rming effect which penetrates deep into the layers of the skin. The Detoxi cation stage puri es the skin by pushing oxygen into the pores revitalising the cells in preparation for the Toni cation stage.

This is where you start to notice the results! Delicious ionised Royal Jelly is liberally applied to the face for hydration and the therapist and the magic sponges continue to gently massage the face working the products into your skin. You really must ask the therapist to hand you a mirror when she has nished one side of your face so you can compare the before and after effect. The results are stunning! You should notice a marked lift around your cheekbone and the ne lines around your eyes seem to disappear!

The use of the Dess’Lift machine is over after the Toni cation stage and while you are quietly marvelling at the ef cacy of the treatment a plumping collagen shield is applied to the face to further enhance the treatment’s rming effects. A self-heating strawberry scented face mask is applied on top of the shield and they work together to plump the facial tissue from within. Once set, the mask is removed and the treatment comes to an end with the application of a smooth plumping serum. The end result leaves your skin feeling soft, hydrated, rm and, it must be said, a bit younger! It is a unique experience and ensures you leave the spa feeling a little more special than when you arrived.

LA FONTAINE SPAOne of the most original spas in the Gulf, La Fontaine Spa is located within a respected arts centre and is an extraordinary oasis hidden away from the deafening anxiety and stress of everyday life. The Spa captures a distinctive Arabian feeling with a high wooden ceiling, wooden oors and carved wooden windows leading to a ower garden courtyard. The whole concept of this wonderfully

designed spa is serenity and this is captured in the shapes, materials, colours and aromas used to create this tranquil haven.

La Fontaine’s primary focus is on helping you to regain and maintain balance using natural products and signature body treatments. La Fontaine’s recommended signature treatment uses the unique SKIN TONIC machine which promises to improve cellulite and help to sculpture the body.

The Skin Tonic treatment takes place in the ‘Boat Room’ so named as you share the room with an old, metre long Arabian dhow which has been incorporated onto an artistically decorated wall to receive water in the form of a basin. The treatment promotes lymphatic drainage based on the ‘palper-rouler’ massage technique which is considered to be the most effective method of ghting cellulite in existence. Once started the Skin Tonic machine begins to gently massage your body whilst you relax and muse on the fact that a minutes worth of treatment with the Skin Tonic machine is equivalent to seven minutes of traditional palper-rouler massage and is also proven to reduce excess weight. As the treatment continues, you experience a wonderful relaxing effect due to the technique of lymphatic drainage. This feeling is further enhanced by a 15 minute manual cellulite massage using essential aromatherapy oils which brings you to the end of your treatment. For best results, clients are encouraged to take advantage of a package of 15 treatments – two to three times a week – which are tailored speci cally to customer needs.

Once you’ve completed the treatment, try to make time to relax by the small pool on the spa terrace and soak up the calming environment.

DIPLOMAT RADISSON BLU HOTEL SPAWhen you are caught up in the hectic activity of the Diplomatic area, you may not realise that there is a beautiful Asian inspired spa nestled in the heart of the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel offering an escape to a world of tranquillity. The lovely surroundings and the soft subtle lighting in the spa immediately welcome you and promote the aura of well-being.

Treatments are wide and varied to suit every need and taste and the facilities available are rst class and include an attractive indoor plunge pool and a secluded ladies only area beside the main outdoor pool. An Anti-Ageing Facial has been chosen as a signature treatment which provides intensive therapy for mature skin and smoothes lines and wrinkles, whilst toning and purifying the skin.

The treatment uses Phytomer products which are known to produce results and capture the balance between pleasure and effectiveness.Unexpectedly (but very welcome nonetheless!) the massage begins with the application of a self-heating mat to your back. These mats are used exclusively at the Diplomat Radisson Blu Spa and immediately lull you into a state of intense relaxation. Alas, you have to roll over eventually for the actual facial! This begins with deep cleansing followed by a unique enzymatic exfoliating scrub working deep into the pores before the face is gently toned. The enzymatic element of the exfoliator activates and stimulates the skin cells and prompts rejuvenation. The ensuing face and shoulder massage further increases your enjoyment of the experience.

You then move onto the key part of the anti-ageing treatment. Gauze is gently placed onto your face and the rst mask to rebalance and purify the skin is applied and foil is placed on top to enhance the effect of the products as they are able to penetrate deeply into the skin. After about ten minutes this mask is removed and the skin toned.

The second mask is dedicated to anti-ageing and is packed full of rming, anti-wrinkle concentrate. This mask is applied directly onto the skin and dries completely allowing it to be peeled off after fteen minutes leaving the skin looking visibly softer. For the best and longer lasting effects, a course of treatments are recommended. The facial comes to a close with the application of a replenishing anti-ageing serum for the skin and lips. This cream is three times more effective than normal moisturiser and you leave the treatment feeling fresh faced and lifted.

To be honest, it was dif cult to choose one signature treatment at Lei Garden Skin Care because so much emphasis is placed on carefully tailoring individual treatments to meet each client’s speci c needs – physical, spiritual and emotional. However, after much thought, we have chosen the Bamboo Massage with Herbal Mountain Facial as the signature treatment as it embodies Lei Garden Skin Care’s organic, all natural philosophy.

Lying comfortably in a room with serene mood lighting you immediately relax as the Bamboo Massage begins with aromatic oils soothingly rubbed into the feet and legs moving slowly up to the back, shoulders and arms. THE GOOD SLEEP GUIDEHas sleep been evading you? The key could lie in your dietary intake. Eating the right foods may help you fall asleep faster, say experts, and even improve the quality of your sleep. Of course, we do suggest that you consult your doctor before trying these out

FOOD

ALMONDSAlmonds have known to be good for the heart. According to some experts, almonds and some types of nuts also have the 'zzz' factor. Almonds are a great source of tryptophan, which helps to relax and calm down. Besides, almonds contain magnesium, known for its excellent muscle relaxing properties

Try this: Have a tablespoon of almond butter or a 1-ounce portion of almonds to help your body relax.

TEANothing relaxes like tea. Try a cup of hot camomile, catnip, anise or fennel tea. All contain natural ingredients which will help you sleep. Most health food stores will also have special blends of herb tea designed to soothe you and help you get to sleep. Green tea contains theanine, which helps promote sleep. Just be sure you get a decaf green tea if drinking it at bedtime.

Try this: Experts recommend trying a 1-cup serving of the hot stuff.

Page 53: signaturebahrain_june_12

MISO SOUPMiso contains amino acids that may boost the production of melatonin, a natural hormone that can help induce the yawns. Research shows that warm liquids also relieve cold symptoms, helping you sleep better when you're feeling under the weather.

Try this: Experts recommend keeping a few 8-ounce packs of instant miso soup at home.

BANANASBananas are an excellent source of magnesium and potassium, which help to relax overstressed muscles. They also contain tryptophan, which convert to serotonin and melatonin, the brain’s key calming hormones. It is no wonder they are called 'a sleeping pill in a peel'.

Try this: Blend one banana with one cup of milk or soy milk (and ice, if desired). Pour and enjoy!

OATMEALNothing like a bowl of warm oatmeal to kick in the ‘zzz’ quotient! Oatmeal is warm, soft, soothing, easy to prepare, and nourishing. It's rich in calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, silicon and potassium - the who's who of nutrients known to support sleep.

Try this: Go easy on the sweeteners; too much sugar before bed can have an anti-calming effect. Instead, consider topping your oatmeal bowl with fruit, like bananas.

FOOD

HARD-COOKED EGGIf you have trouble staying asleep at night, it may be because you didn’t eat a pre-bedtime snack high in protein, or perhaps your snack was too high in simple, high-sugar carbohydrates, like cake and candy. Hard-cooked eggs can help make you sleep easy and comfortably well because of the protein in them. Moreover, you get hours of uninterrupted sleep through the night.

Try this: If you don’t eat eggs then try cheese, nuts or any other other protein-rich snack.

CHERRIESAccording to experts, cherries, particularly tart cherries, naturally boost the body's supply of melatonin, which helps people with insomnia. While research is going on how much juice or how many cherries are needed to get us to the Land of Nod, experts say sipping a glass of cherry juice before bedtime couldn't hurt.

Try this: Have a serving of fresh, frozen or dried cherries if you don’t quite fancy juice. No added sugars please.

HONEYHoney has been used as a popular sleep aid for thousands of years. An ancient Chinese proverb calls for ‘eating honey every night’, and European folk healers have recommended drinking a cup of warm milk with honey before bedtime since the Middle Ages. This tiny bit of glucose sends a message to your brain to turn off orexin, a neurotransmitter that has been linked to alertness.

Try this: Two teaspoons of cider vinegar with two teaspoons of honey in a glass of warm water before bedtime or maybe some honey in a cup of warm chamomile tea.

EDAMAMELightly salted edamame is your answer, especially if you're dealing with menopause-related symptoms. The natural estrogen-like compounds found in soy-based products can be very bene cial in controlling those nighttime hot ashes that can disturb your sleep, say experts.

Try this: Blend together 2 cups of shelled, cooked edamame with 1tsp salt, a drizzle of olive oil and 1 clove garlic (optional) until smooth.

WARM MILKYou remember all those nights when your mother used to force-feed warm milk to you? It was for the very reason that you would fall asleep soon and stay asleep. Milk contains the amino acid L-tryptophan, which turns to 5-HTP and releases relaxing serotonin. It’s also high in calcium, which promotes sleep.

Try this: In a large mug, stir together milk, vanilla and little sugar (only the bare minimum). Heat in the microwave on full power for 1 minute and 30 seconds. Stir in some nutmeg powder, and serve hot.

The application of bee venom, albeit as one of several ingredients in the face mask that everyone’s talking about, is said to stimulate the skin into producing

its own collagen and elastin, mimicking the body’s natural reaction to a sting and in doing so, plumping up the skin and filling out those tedious fine lines and wrinkles.

Rather reluctantly I’ve started to admit that my frown and laughter lines need tender loving care beyond the limits of my daily beauty regime. With a natural preference towards organic based products, Heaven instantly ticks some of my boxes, but can it really deliver on its promises of the beauty holy grail, dewy skin with instant and youthful elasticity?I tracked down the range to The Nail Spa in Dubai and opted for the Heaven LIA Facial.

It was reassuring to hear that the creator of the Heaven range, Deborah Mitchell had flown to Dubai and personally trained all the therapists at The Nail Spa for six days, but then it's not

suprising when you find out more about this inspirational woman.

Deborah’s dedication to the production of organic and holistic cosmetics got her recognition as International Business Woman of the Year and the woman responsible for Kate Middleton’s glowing face at her wedding last year. Aware that the world’s press would be conducting a close examination in glossy magazines, Deborah’s confident approach has been rewarded with regular patronage at the royal residences.

Lying on a heated bed in a soothing treatment room after a hectic day in Dubai, I already feel privileged as my therapist, Eldrina, applies the first of twelve stages in the extensive LIA facial. She begins with a light and elegant scent to relax the face and body. With unswerving conviction, Eldrina quietly talks through each stage, explaining the benefits from the Limited Edition Cleansing Milk compiled to balance hormone levels in the skin, to the Skin Polish exfoliator and mandarin scented Cleanse and Tone face wash, which also firms and initiates the production of collagen. With the early prep over, the stage is set for the anti-aging treatment

NATURAL BOTOX!There’s a right royal buzz surrounding the Heaven skincare range and it’s not just because of the unusual ingredient it contains. Favoured by the Duchesses of Cornwall and Cambridge and amongst celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Heaven’s signature product, the Bee Venom Mask, claims to be an effective and natural alternative to botox. Rebecca Jones puts it to the test

BEAUTY

to begin. The first of the big guns in the battle against aging is the sublime LIA Therapy Organic Oil, an intensive night treatment that can be used on the face or body.

Eldrina skilfully massaged this unctuous oil into my face and neck in preparation for the Bee Venom Mask. I admit, that it would be easy to get lulled into the sheer luxuriousness of these products, but from the moment the mask was applied, a little bit of bee magic happened and my skin cells started tingling, this continued until the mask was wiped away, twenty minutes later. The product had a deliciously, delicate scent of manuka honey and shea butter, but would it really live up to the hype and bring back some of my forgotten youth?

Following on from the mask, an Orange Flower Cell Renewal treatment was applied, leaving my skin feeling clear and smooth while rejuvenating and healing the tissue. The Heaven Age Defiance cream is said to help reduce scar formation, rosacea and to seal moisture within the skin making it ideal as a make-up base. After the Bee Venom Mask, my favourite product was without doubt the Heavenly Eyes Regenerating Complex, a putty containing

Vitamin A, oxygen and moisture reservoir that was pressed firmly into my collection of fine lines and wrinkles. My skin was literally buzzing and my eyes were wide and sparkling, despite a hectic day in Dubai.

As facials go, I can honestly say that this was one of the finest I have experienced in any five star spa, high praise indeed from an initial sceptic. It was clear that the multifunctional products in the Heaven range have been carefully developed to work in harmony with each other. Containing a wealth of organic ingredients aiding toning, firming, regenerating and also healing in natural ways, it was fabulous to find that they were all subtly scented and never cloying or overpowering in texture leaving plumped skin full of radiance.

As for the claim of a natural alternative to botox, the effects of the Bee Venom Mask were clear from the first application on my skin and in the following couple of days, the skin continued to bloom and glow. Good thing then, that I’d brought a pot of the amber nectar back home with me

The Capture Totale range has the beautiful Sharon Stone for a muse. Need we say more? Sharon is, after all, living proof of the slogan, ‘More beautiful today than at twenty’!

Capture Totale is Dior’s personalised response for women over the age of 35, who are looking for a solid, global, anti-ageing programme. Based on the concept of ‘total beauty’, this begins with the first step of the skin care routine and continues through to make-up, for complete, radiant beauty.

Signature speaks to Edouard Mauvais-Jarvis, Scientific Communication Director – Christian Dior Skincare and Make Up, on the Capture Totale range...

How would you say Capture Totale has evolved over the years?“In two years, One Essential has become a crucial element in global anti-ageing beauty care and daily skincare routine. Its creation forged a true break with skincare of the past thanks to its unique value proposition: to deeply detoxify the skin while boosting the active ingredients of any other skincare used in synergy. Today, in 2012, new proof of its skincare effectiveness, which in just six weeks, can repair the visible damage to the skin caused by a year of ageing, have cemented its global leadership.”

The latest in the line is the Serum One Essential Mask, the first Dior "serum in a mask"? How did this product come about? How would you describe its properties?"The role of a mask is to allow for the application of an unequalled quantity of active ingredients on a short amount of time, by applying a thick layer of texture on the face and a specific formulation. The One Essential

mask allows with a unique application to deliver the equivalent of one week of One essential serum usage. It has a faster and more intense ingredient penetration rate than classical Sheet masks. It’s a revolution."

What skin care routine would you recommend for 35 and above and why?“From the age of 35 some aging signs begin to appear, while the regeneration and repairing potential of the skin begins to decrease. So the skin begins to accumulate more and more damages that cripple the repair process, which makes it age even faster. That’s why my recommendation would be to combine the use of one essential , to boost the recycling of toxins with the use of a global anti-aging such as capture totale to relaunch the repair of damaged structures. Using only an anti aging without taking care of the toxins would be like trying to drive a car with the handbrake on : it would work, but in a weakened way.

"The combination of One Essential + Capture Totale fully frees the regenerative and repair power of capure totale for a doubled effect.”

How does one take care of his/her skin when travelling or on a holiday?“People travelling or on holiday have to face two main things : A jet lag, source of fatigue and inner stress for the skin A “climate lag”, source of external stress So these people may have to change the type of cream they use and also combine it with an intense detoxifying routine such as the One Essential Mask for example, and the One Essential serum and eye serum to avoid the marks of fatigue.

“Above all this let’s not forget that the air conditioning and low pressure combined effects of airplane travels generate a lot of dryness that will require specific care with a nourishing texture. An application of the mask could also certainly be like “pushing a reset button” to clear up all the damaging influences of tiring and long trips.”

What Dior skincare products would you recommend to people who are always on the go?“People who are always on the go are stressed and the more their organism gets stressed the more it produces oxidation and toxins that accumulate. For them the use of a serum such as One Essential is the key to counteracting the damaging effects of accumulated stress on their skin.”

Are there any specific products in Dior Skin care that cater to Middle East? What kind of

Skincare routine would you recommend for men and Women in the Middle East?“People from the Middle East have a lot in common with South Asian skin types."They have a Caucasian skin but yet highly pigmented. Middle east, like SE Asia is hot and exposed to UV exposure. So the main skin features appear, skin pigmentation unevenness, shininess, open pores. Middle East people look for ranges such as Diorsnow and light textures such as the Hydralife skin perfect. They need UV bases like the Diorsnow’s and skin pigmentation evenness control serums such as Diorsnow DNA control.”

How would you say Capture Totale has evolved? What is the future of Capture Totale? “We truly believe that the future of Capture Totale is strongly bonded to our Stem Cell technology advances. Thanks to our unique Network of stem cell researchers around the world and specifically in Stanford Universtity we are able to keep a step ahead on the knowledge and understanding of the key role of Stem cells in the skin and along the process of aging.

"We also believe that we will only be able to have a relevant approach on aging if we are able to correct the damages that accumulate in cells along time. This is why we will continue working on the Nobel prize awarded proteasome technology, allowing for an elimination and recycling of cellular toxins to fight against aging and trigger regeneration of skin structures.

"We've only unveiled a small part of the power these technologies are about to deliver and our work in the years to come is to find the new ingredients that will be able to complement and reinforce the action on these key biological targets for an even more powerful action on aging for Capture Totale.”

What is the secret of a beautiful, young skin? What should we do to preserve youthful skin?“Preserving a youthful skin is above all protecting it from aggressions, but as we all know that the universal flawless protection is an utopia considering the lifestyle most of people are forced to have, the best ally is to rely on our existing repair and regeneration systems to prolong our youthfulness. This is why with One essential and Eye essential we protect the regenerative power of stem cells and stimulate the natural toxin recycling system of cells to help repair the damages as they occur, without losing a second.”

NO SWEAT ‘No sweat’ is the mantra for gym wear. Today a

lot of brands have come up with anti-sweat, dry

t track lowers, which are hip yet comfortable to

wear for intensive workout sessions. However, I

recommend hosiery tracks that are my all-time

favourite. Shorts also are an ideal wear during

leg workouts as well as to show off those newly

acquired well-toned legs.

TEE-CHNOLOGYTechnology is fabulous when it comes to high

performance garments in gym wear. Nike,

Reebok and Adidas have a great collection of

anti-sweat T-shirts that come in varied patterns

and colours. Racer back well- tting T-shirts with

motivational quotes are in style now, inspiring

you during the workout. Also look out for the bre

content in the labels.

SOLE SEARCHINGShoes are an integral part of gym wear

accessories, but that doesn’t mean you refrain

from being trendy. Raise your shoe style quotient

in gym by investing in blingy shoes in silver and

gold from Nike, Adidas and D&G. Opt for well

tted, comfortable light shoes with a exible sole.

For running on the treadmill, spiked ones are

great but for weight training choose the shock

absorbent shoes that provide apt support to the

heel.

SOCK’ EM UPCotton or hosiery socks from Nike or Reebok are

a must to be able to breathe freely throughout the

workout session. For women who are high on the

style status, wear ankle length socks as they look

trendy and are super comfortable.

GRIP IT RIGHTHighly recommended is a good pair of hand

gloves to get a good grip while working out. It

will also protect your beautiful soft hands from

getting those eeky corns.

BAND-ITKeeping your hair in control is important while

working out. Go for the cute and sporty look by

sporting broad fancy head bands available in

various designs and colours. It’s best to skip any

jewellery in the gym- strictly no hoops, bracelets

or anklets please.

DON’T FORGET THE ACCESSORIESTo carry all the stuff mentioned above, a nice

sporty bag in vibrant colours is a must. Also, do

remember to get yourself one of those trendy

sippers.

LES SOURCES DE CAUDALIE, FRANCEThe concept behind Les Sources de Caudalie is inspired by the ‘French Paradox’, discovered over 20 years ago. It refers to a study proving that the French diet and lifestyle, particularly in Southwest France, is conducive to good health. Between vineyards and forests, at only 20 minutes from Bordeaux center, the architect Yves Collet created from scratch contemporary buildings from recycled local materials in tune with the surroundings. A retreat for all of the senses, it blends unique vinotherapie treatments designed to slow the aging process with an idyllic locale among vineyards near Bordeaux. Rich in minerals, the property's warm underground spring water is great for soaking away what ails you. Wraps and massages use grape extracts called polyphenols, which strengthen blood vessels and enhance micro-circulation, while slimming programmes combine techniques that break down cellulite with special dietary menus and varietal treatments.

You can choose from their extensive regular and seasonal packages.

There is something about Christian

Louboutin that always brings a

smile on my face. Perhaps it’s

his warmth that resonates as he

walks in a room or the charming

French accent or the real reason

is that this man has changed my

life. I can't say that about too many people, but my

life has never been the same after I bought my rst

pair of red soles 10 years ago. The shoe was called

‘No Prive’, a high heel with a hidden platform that

gave me con dence that no one could ever give

me, better posture, height and a silhouette that

made my clothes drape perfectly on my body. Is it

really possible that a pair of shoes could give me

this massive transformation? The answer is ‘yes’.

That is why I am among millions of women around

the world that share this admiration for the Red

Sole king. I have been lucky to travel with Christian

all across the Middle East over the years, but last

month was exceptional as he celebrated 20 years of

his brand. I caught up with Christian over coffee and

chatted about the red sole and what’s in store next

for the brand…..

You are always travelling? Don’t you ever want

to be at home relaxing?

“I love to travel and to meet people from other

cultures. I am always so happy to visit new countries

it inspires me. I really like people.”

From your collection which shoe must every

woman own?

“Every woman should own a Pigalle pump, its

simple and balanced and I have never seen anyone

who it didn't look good in it.”

Favourite ready to wear designer?

“Azzedine Alaia,he truly honours the body of a

woman - to atter and shape.”

It’s been a very globe-trotting year for you?

"This year has been exceptional as I am celebrating

20 years of my business. Each country we have

done a different celebration such as a collaboration

with Crazy House in Paris, an exhibition with British

Design Museum in London and for the Middle East

we are celebrating in Dubai with a shoe signing

event, exhibition in Dubai Mall and circus theme

party. It’s been a busy week in Dubai but I am

enjoying being here.”

You have visited Dubai many a times…what are

your favourite spots?

“Royal Mirage hotel is very comfortable and has

good service. As far as restaurants go, I like trying

new places. I like Hakasaan, but somehow I always

end up going to Zuma and Le Petit Maison on each

trip out to Dubai.”

Do share the secret of the red sole with us

“There is no secret…. The colour just happened

while using my assistant’s nail polish under the sole,

but red evokes a spark, happiness, excitement and

passion. It’s a good colour.”

What’s new in the World of Louboutin?

“I am excited to have nally opened my rst men’s

store in Paris. Also the coffee table book was to

commemorate my 20 years in a book format. I keep

saying 20 years but it doesn’t feel so long I feel like

it’s just the beginning of a story.”

She will turn 40 in August, but the lissome lass who set our hearts racing and made The Mask’s heart pop out does not intend to allow age to get in the way of life. Cameron Diaz was recently quoted as saying, “I`m so, so excited about turning 40. When I was in my twenties, I couldn`t wait to get

to my thirties. Now at the end of my thirties, I`m so looking forward to my forties. I love getting older.”

We can understand why! She looks smokin' hot! She loves to work out and feels that it is important to "take care of your body not just for today, but for the rest of your life if you want to feel that energy even when you are 60." Anything but 60, or even 30, Cameron is as youthful as she was when photographer Jeff Dunas discovered her. Cameron was 16 then. Within days she got herself a contract with Elite and shortly thereafter began working for clients such as Coca-Cola and Nivea. “She has an energy, an electricity in her face, a sparkle that is unmistakable,” Dunas was quoted as saying about his muse.

Today, Cameron’s popularity is such that it needs no real introduction and we suspect it has a PR agent of its own. For we all know, There's Something About Cameron! In 2010,

Cameron Diaz's accessory of choice: TAG Lady Link timepiece

Forbes Magazine ranked Cameron as the richest Hispanic female celebrity, ranking number 60 among the wealthiest 100. She was also listed among CEOWORLD magazine's Top Accomplished Women Entertainers.

With innumerable films and endorsements under her belt, Cameron’s latest conquest is the timekeeping business. She recently inked a sweet three-year deal to be the brand ambassador and muse for TAG

Heuer’s Link lady collection, which is dedicated to beautiful and rebellious women around the world. Startlingly beautiful and devastatingly feminine, Cameron is also an avid sportswoman, making her the consummate TAG Heuer ambassador.

The new look and feel of TAG Heuer’s latest ladies’ collection reflects Cameron’s personal style: “I want a watch that is more than just a timepiece, it should be

like my favourite piece of jewellery,” she says. “The new Link Lady is modern yet timeless, sexy and elegant and I’m equally comfortable wearing it on the red carpet or in my day-to-day life.” The glossy new jewelled Link Lady is seductively curvy and sophisticated, yet faithful to the iconic Link design and TAG Heuer savoir-faire. It’s not just about sporting an exquisite piece of bling, Cameron will also serve to benefit and raise awareness for programmes that empower women,

including the UN Women campaign. “I am deeply appreciative that TAG shares my desire to support women who are not free to pursue even the most basic goals, simply because of their gender,” she says.

All said and done, Cameron doesn’t play it safe and she is more than just blonde and sexy! We present to you an interview with the beautiful bombshell on her association with TAG and more..

It is rare for you to enter an endorsement agreement of this kind. How did you choose TAG Heuer? “Throughout my career, I have been very selective about aligning myself with brands. I love the fact that TAG Heuer challenges the rules and thinks outside the box and I’m honored to be associated with such an iconic and forward-thinking brand. I have been a fan of the TAG Heuer brand for many years.

“I also appreciate TAG’s social responsibility and it was an important factor in my decision to align myself with them for this campaign. It is very important that companies and individuals strive to make our world a better place and I’m happy to be involved with a company that understands that.”

What do you think of TAG Heuer’s New Link Lady? Watches are sometimes more masculine. What makes the Link Lady

Signature june 2012.indd 79Signature june 2012.indd 79 6/1/12 4:43 AM6/1/12 4:43 AM

Page 84: signaturebahrain_june_12

80

more feminine to you? Why does it appeal to women? “The design of the Link Lady is different from the motor racing-inspired pieces that are so closely associated with the TAG brand. Yet, it is true to the soul of the brand, with the iconic S-shaped link of the bracelet. It is so elegant and comfortable. I love it.”

“Also, the Link Lady is more than just a smaller version of a man’s watch. It is true to the TAG Heuer line, but distinctly feminine at the same time. There are as many variations on the women’s watches as there are types of women. I consider mine one of my favourite pieces of jewellery, much more than just a timepiece. My Link Lady is at home on the red carpet as in my day-to-day life.”

What has been your biggest challenge in life and what will be your next one? “I don’t think about challenges, I consider them opportunities to learn and grow. I consider having the career I have a great gift and I try to never lose sight of how fortunate I am to be able to do what I do. I look forward to finding new and different ways to express myself creatively and to share what I’ve learned with others.”

How would you describe your personal style? Is it sporty, stylish, avant-garde or more elegant? “I’m usually dressed down in my off time, but whether I’m casual or dressed up, I have to feel comfortable and confident in whatever I ‘m wearing.”

How do you decide on what accessories to wear? “Less is definitely more for me. I feel that accessories should complement what you are wearing and not overpower the outfit. That is what I love about the Link Lady, it is elegant and understated. “

QUICK TAKESWhat do you look for in a timepiece?“A watch says a lot about the person who wears it. I think the Link Lady is for the con dent, elegant, modern woman who sees her watch as a piece of her favorite jewellery.”

Your life philosophy Always be grateful

Luxury is…Anything that makes you feel good. To me, luxury is about quality, not extravagance.

Luxury you cannot live without…The luxury of time. When I am not working, I love the feeling of not rushing around.

André C. Meyerhans delves into the viability

of cross-disciplinary designs

The hotter period of the year is here. Many organisers scheduled their last events, just before the region estivates, and the pulse of the cities drops drastically. I

also participated in such a pre-summer event: A solo exhibition on my work which showcased architectural and furniture designs as well as art and jewellery. The wide range of exhibits led to discussions whether cross-disciplinary activities are viable in the market today or simply a fortuitous niche created by the designer.

The time of the universal genius like Leonardo Da Vinci is over, for sure. However, focussed specialists with a tunnelled view proved to be inadequate as well. It is the lateral thinking and working that brings new insights: many theoretical physicists – like Stephen Hawking – see their trade merging with philosophy and religion when pushing the boundaries. Economists find the traditional frameworks explaining the market insufficiently and team up with psychologists to find new formulas, the so-called behavioural economics. And engineers

optimise structures according to mechanisms and principles found by biologists in nature which is labelled under bio-engineering. There is no exception when it comes to creative fields and design; it is the cross-disciplinary endeavors that set new horizons.

One needs to explore outside the box in order to get new insights. New ideas do not arise with repetition and by mingling with people who have the same knowledge. Cross-disciplinary activities are not only viable but essential in today’s world! They are source to new ideas and new approaches. There is no exception in the creative fields.

Working across professions has also different benefits: it allows isolating individual parameters, transferring them into a media more appropriate for further investigation and developing it there to the next level. Either the parameter can be reintegrated into its original context or insights gained in the parameter research may inspire ideas in other fields. Personally, I like to examine a single parameter. It supports focus and abstraction. Most of my artworks are actually off-springs of some architectural parameter studies. The jewellery

André C. Meyerhans is a Swiss architect who lives and works in Dubai, UAE. His creations

range from 250’000m2-urban plans and one-billion-US-dollar mixed use developments to

furniture-like objects, art and jewellery. André has also written for various trade magazines and held lectures in numerous institutions on architecture and design. He is also a regular guest critique

at the Architectural Department of the American University in Sharjah. For more details you can visit

line showcased at my exhibition roots in a principle which originated in architecture and has been further developed in various artworks. Insights gained in the different fields will find their way back into architecture, closing the self-inspired circle. It is a reciprocal stimulation between the trades.

Many of the contemporary designers and artists deliberately work across borders knowing of the potential that can be unleashed. For example, signature architect Zaha Hadid, she developed her architecture in inspiring paintings which show similarities with the Russian avant-garde of the early twentieth century. Her artwork was initially much more thought after than her architecture. Many critiques believe that it was the drawing style that greatly influenced her early deconstructivistic forms. Similarly, her bio-engineered, organic shapes materialized initially in furniture rather than in architecture. Now the world-famous architect engages in all trades and commissions include vases, crockery, tables and shoes!

Another well-known, designer originating from the region and who successfully works cross-disciplinarily is Karim Rashid. He entered the

domain of interior architecture from industrial design. In his case, however, I would be more careful in seeing some lateral stimulation. He rather manages to apply a codex of shapes and color schemes to various objects and trades. While this attitude might marginally result in gaining new insights and ideas, it certainly contributes to developing a strong brand identity.Generally, it can be said that cross-disciplinary activities are especially fruitful if started from an abstract point. It is because this approach ensures that a thought can be exposed to the specifics of the discipline without limitations. Transfers on a formalistic level, on the other hand, often lack the depth as restrictions in application in the new media may limit investigations.

Any cross-disciplinary activity requires that a person is flexible enough to enter another domain. Which domain one “cross”-enters or “cross”-tries, however, has often to do with opportunities, maybe destiny; pursuing and continuing the cross-disciplinary activity is related to persistence and commitment. So maybe, it is actually flexibility, eagerness to explore and dedication that we should look for, and lateral innovation is only the result

Following the success of the company’s Q5 and Q7 SUV models, which made up 30 per cent of total Middle East sales in the rst four months of 2012, Audi has decided to bring their new compact SUV, the Q3, to the market as well. The company is placing high hopes on its rst SUV in the compact segment and with good reason. It is a truly impressive vehicle in proper Audi style. Here are ten reasons that will make it a sure- re hit in the market.

IT HAS STYLEThe Q3 has a distinctive road stance that makes it immediately recognisable as the youngest member of the Audi family. The coupe-like lines are an expression of its sporty character. The low roof line, which begins dropping rather early, and the very at D-pillars underscore its dynamics. Sharp edges frame elegantly arched sheet metal surfaces, and distinctive lights accentuate the front and rear. Furthermore, the stylish wedge-shaped xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights and the LED tail lights come as a standard in the Middle East.

IT HAS PERFORMANCE AND FLEXIBILITY TO MATCHThe Q3 is being launched with two four-cylinder 2.0 TFSI engines, which combine direct injection with turbocharging and energy recovery system. With power outputs of 170hp and 211 hp respectively, these engines are as ef cient as they are powerful. For the 170hp and

211hp version respectively, the engines deliver a constant 280Nm and 300Nm of torque and accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 7.8 and 6.9 seconds on their way to a top speed of 212 and 230km/h. Audi combines both engines with a fast-shifting dual-clutch seven-speed S-tronic transmission. Quattro all-wheel drive is standard out here. And best of all, the fuel consumption is just 7.7L per 100km on average. Audi engineers precisely matched the resonant frequencies of the body and those of the add-on and internal components to give the Q3 its excellent acoustic features and quiet interiors when driving.

IT CARES FOR THE SAFETY OF ITS PASSENGERSIn addition to numerous safety features in the construction of the vehicle itself, the compact premium SUV comes standard with two front airbags, thorax-pelvis side airbags in the backs of the front seats and curtain head airbags. Pyrotechnic belt tensioners up front, belt force limiters and the integral Audi head restraint system, which mitigates the consequences of a rear-impact collision, round out the package. Side airbags in the rear are optionally available later on. Iso x child seat anchor points in the rear and front passenger seat including deactivatable airbag are standard. Sensors monitor whether the rear safety belts are fastened. Earlier this year the Q3 received ve stars – the highest possible score – for

passive crash safety by the European consumer protection initiative Euro NCAP (New Car Assessment Program).

IT ALSO CARES FOR PEDESTRIAN SAFETYIt is also state of the art when it comes to pedestrian protection. The front bumper and the cross-member behind it, the energy-absorbing foam between the two components and the aluminium bonnet make for an effective package. Low-speed collisions – the standard insurance category crash and the bumper crash, both of which are important for determining the comprehensive insurance category – result in no major damage.

YOU CAN FREELY EXPRESS YOURSELFEvidence of the premium character of the Audi Q3 can be seen in every last detail in the interior – in the selection of the materials, in their processing and in the tight, even gaps. A wide variety of materials and colours for the interior offers customers countless possibilities for expressing their own personal style. The wrap-around, a large arc extending from one front door to the other, is a design feature borrowed from the large Audi model series. The split bottom spoke of the three-spoke sport steering wheel is an eye-catching and exclusive feature of the Q model family.

IT IS FEATURE PACKEDThe SUV is packed to the brim with the latest

in technology and equipment. For starters, it comes with a generously long list of standard equipment, including 17-inch alloy wheels, the concert audio system as well as ISOFIX child seat mounting. Audi also offers a choice of optional equipment taken directly from the luxury class, including the adaptive light system, the high-beam assistant, the panoramic glass roof and the comfort key. For the Middle East, the standard settings also include heat insulating glass and a deluxe automatic air conditioning that considers the position of the sun and humidity.

The park assist system manoeuvres the vehicle into tight parking spots almost autonomously; Audi side assist employs radar to help change lanes. Audi also offers a comprehensive range of infotainment components. Topping the range of options is the hard-drive navigation system MMI navigation plus, which displays high-resolution 3D graphics on a fold-out 7.0-inch colour monitor. The Bose surround sound system delivers 465watts of power to 14 speakers. Coming soon is the Bluetooth online car phone paired with a WLAN hotspot to provide the Q3 with Internet connectivity.

THE LED INTERIOR LIGHTING PACKAGEAnother exclusive solution in this segment is the LED interior lighting package – a technology that bathes the interior in dramatic light. Ef cient white light-emitting diodes provide the

cabin and reading lights. They illuminate the doors, the headlining, the foot wells, the vanity mirrors, the storage compartments and the air vent thumb wheels. LED light guides even accentuate the cup holders. With the Bose surround sound system, the frames of the woofer/mid-range speakers in the front doors form elegant rings of white light.

IT IS COMPACT, LIGHTWEIGHT AND AERODYNAMICAudi is a leader in lightweight aluminium motor car construction and this trend is also re ected in the compact SUV which is 4.39m long, 1.83m wide and 1.59m high. The base version of the Q3 weighs just 1,630kg. Meanwhile, the car’s bonnet and the wrap-around tailgate are made of aluminium and weigh just 8.8 and 10.8kg, respectively – nearly 50 per cent less than equivalent in steel. The low aerodynamic drag coef cient of 0.32Cd also ensures a quieter ride.

IT IS SPACIOUSThe Audi Q3 offers ample room for all ve passengers. Despite the sloping, coupe-like roof line, even tall passengers enjoy suf cient headroom in the back, and there is also ample room for feet, knees, shoulders and elbows. Getting in and out of the vehicle is easy thanks to the raised seating position and convenient hip points.

IT IS ALSO PRACTICALThe Q3 offers plenty of storage at all of the seats. The console of the centre tunnel is home to two cup holders, a 12-volt outlet and a storage bin. There are large pockets in the doors capable of holding 1.5L bottles, and there is a small, fold-out compartment to the left of the steering wheel. The optional storage package offers even more convenience. It includes fold-down compartments under the front seats, storage nets on the front seat backs, a multi-purpose retaining hook in the passenger foot well and a locking glove box.The luggage compartment of the compact SUV has a capacity of 460L, which can be increased to 1,365L. Many useful options make the Q3 even more versatile and convenient in everyday use. This includes a pass-through hatch, a reversible cargo oor with a tub on the reverse side, a reversible mat and a cargo area package that includes a luggage net, a side-mounted net, a 12-volt outlet and a second light. The standard roof rail can be tted with a wide range of racks for bikes, skis, kayaks and other sports equipment from the Audi accessories programme

STYLEAs a coupe with pleasant proportions it represents the best of the best, all but guaranteeing that its owners will never suffer the indignity of being shown up at the valet stand!

HERITAGESince the launch of the original GT in 2003, the W12-engined Continental range has gone from strength to strength with over 50,000 sales worldwide, making Bentley's factory in Crewe, England, the largest producer of 12-cylinder engines in the world. The W12 story continues to unfold and remains the ultimate expression of Bentley's engineering strength. With the new 4.0 litre V8 engine Bentley had widened the appeal of the latest generation of Continentals.

DESIGNNew superforming technology has helped create a beautifully sculptured new body which gives the coupe an even crisper and more defined appearance. Favourite details include the black grille, red background enamel badges, redesigned front valance, exhaust tips and large 21in wheels.

ENGINEERINGNew 4.0L V8 engine is a first engine in this model

series. The high-technology V8 also features high pressure direct injection, low friction bearings, thermal management, energy recuperation via the charging system, and innovative turbo charger packaging for greater efficiency.

LUXURY & COMFORT DETAILINGCarries four adult passengers in a luxuriously appointed cabin which itself is a wonderful mix of craftsmanship, bespoke appointments and modern conveniences. Contoured leather-bound seats now provide even greater support and rear leg-room. Signature cues inside the cabin include an Eliade cloth headlining, new contemporary Dark Fiddleback Eucalyptus veneers, optional two-tone leather colour splits. Even there’s a generous boot too!

INFOTAINMENTA sweeping dashboard is even more stylish. The new touchscreen infotainment system features state-of-the-art navigation, Google Maps and entertainment while the latest Balanced Mode Radiator speaker technology and Dirac Dimensions™ digital sound processing deliver enhanced audio quality.

PERFORMANCE & HANDLINGBesides 500hp on tap, the instantly recognisable

growl of the new 4.0L V8 engine sets it apart from its Bentley stablemates. Since the car is lighter than its W12 sibling, it handles better. The V8’s all-wheel drive system employing an advanced Torsen differential and a 40:60 rear biased power split ensures safe yet dynamic sports car handling inall road conditions.

GREEN CREDENTIALSThe new V8 Continental model fulfils Bentley's environmental commitment to produce a new powertrain that delivers a 40 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions.

DRIVING RANGE EXTENDEDThe new V8 Continental models achieve outstanding levels of fuel efficiency for the luxury performance sector and are capable of travelling over 800km on a single tank of fuel.

THE USPIt is said to cost around 10 per cent less than its 12-cylinder counterpart. The idea that the V8 Continental GT is exclusive beyond anything but the depth of your pockets is almost laughable now – but make no mistake this is the ‘Thinking Man's’ Continental now
