INT. ZAMINDARI HOUSEHOLD – DAY (1947) Classical dance music and sound of gungroo with dance steps fill the air. Camera shows a piano, white lace curtains flowing with wind, old style furnitures. The silhouette of two women - one sitting on floor doing dance ‘taals’ (shot is sideways), other younger girl we see dancing to the taals of her Guruji (Amar’s Sister).

Cut to: Hallway, marble hallway, we see male feet, walking, we only see the steps he taking (from top, above should). The male figure is walking toward a door. He matches the gungroo sound with whistles.

Cut to: Dance finishes. Guruji (Amar’s Sister) gets up and excuses herself for the day.

Cut to: He opens the glass French doors, sees the girl (still whistling). Girl turns her head (first time her face is shown). She walks over to her belongings.

AMAR What? Dance lesson is over? Ki? Naach shekha shesh?

SURAIYA Are you not embarrased to watch women dancing? Apnar lajja korey na, meyder naach dekhtey?

AMAR Are you not embarrased to secretly learn dancing? Listen, your dance is quite nice. Just like the women of my dreams. Apnar lajja korey na, lukiye lukiye naach shikhtey? Shonun, apnar naach khub bhalo. Amar mon-er manushir moton.

    SURAIYA

(laughs) Really? She must be very disappointed Tai? Shay to eta shuney onek dukho pabey.

Suraiya puts on her black shawl, covering her head. Amar laughs off her comment, noticing Suraiya is actually a Muslim.

    SURAIYA

I hope you meet her one day. Asha kori apnar tar shathey ek din dekha hobe.

AMAR Maybe I already have. Hoytoba dekha hoi gechey.

    SURAIYA Maybe. Hoyto.

AMAR Maybe it’s you. Hoyto (pause) Apni ee shei…

SURAIYA (interrupting and laughing) Me? No. You don’t even know my name. Ami? Kintu apne to amar namtai janen na.

AMAR (mockingly laughs) What? We don’t fall in love with names; we fall in love with people. Taate ki? Amra to naam ke bhalobashi na, amra manush ke bhalobashi.

  • 3

SURAIYA Wow, I see you can speak to women very well. Bah, meyeder saathe to khub guchiye kotha bolte paren?

    AMAR

(laughs) Not women…only with one woman. Meyeder saathe na.. sudhu ekti meyer saathe (pause, smiling and hinting) Jodi tar khoj pai

    SURAIYA

No one said it was easy to find love. Ke-o to boley nai prem khuje powa shohoj.

Suraiya begins to leave but Amar calls for her attention. She turns her head.

AMAR Oy! It’s not safe for Muslims to be in this area these days… Shunun! Aaj kal ei eleka-ta musulman-der jonno nirapod noi…

Suraiya stares blankly at Amar while he approaches her.

AMAR Especially for an innocent girl like you...Don’t be scared. Apnar moto mey-der ikhaney eka asha uchit na...Bhoy paben na.

    SURAIYA

(defiantly) What makes you think I’m scared? Amar bhoy lagchey ta ki kore janen?

Suraiya begins to leave the auditorium again but Amar stops her by grabbing her hand.

AMAR What’s your name? Apnar naam ta janalen na?

  • 4

    SURAIYA

Does it matter? Jenay kono laab hobey?

    AMAR

Let me know and see. Ek baar janiye dekhen.

Suraiya then abrubtly leaves the auditorium, Amar stands behind amused by her defiance and lost in her love.

Cut to: Intro titles playing. EXT. COLONIAL INDIA (MARKET/ALLEYS) – DAY (1947) Simanaheen Title Song - Suraiya enters the market in the street, knowing Amar is behind her, she often looks back, just to get a glance of him – her smiles indicate she would rather be with him. They make eye contact and exchange smiles through the windows created by the stalls and booths of the market. The tension of the Hindu Muslim divide is in the air, much like the tension between the two warring hearts.

    Fade out:

    INT. KAVITA’S BEDROOM – DAY (2011)

After Kavita’s dance piece is finished, camera zooms into her face - showing Kavita yearning to break free but stuck within tradition.
