The accused has sat quietly taking notes throughout the trial, now he is taking the stand.

John Ike Koopmans, who is charged with two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder in relation to the 2013 deaths of Keith Wharton and Rosemary Fox, took the stand on Thursday in Penticton Supreme Court.

“Did you commit the crimes you are accused of?” Defence counsel Don Skogstad asked.

“No I did not,” Koopmans replied.“Do you have a criminal record,”

Skogstad asked.“No,” Koopmans replied.During the opening statement from

the defence Skogstad noted to the jury that “if an accused chooses not to tes-tify nobody can make them.”

The defence said they will not be re-hashing the testimony from the many Crown witnesses who have taken the stand in the trial that has lasted multiple months.

Skogstad said there have been “a lot of frailties in this case already,” reminding the jury that in Canada there is a presumption of innocence, and that Koopmans’ guilt has to be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

Skogstad also reminded the jury that Koopmans will be subject to any questions the Crown has for him.

Koopmans, who has worked as a welder, prospector and commercial fishermen in the past, said he and Keith Wharton had become “good

friends” and would work on welding projects together after the death of Wharton’s father.

He called Wharton a “good mechanic” but said that he had “lost interest” in the welding work and became more interested in drugs in the months prior to the incident.

He admitted to lending Wharton money to buy crack, saying that he would lend Koopmans money for liquor if he needed it.

Skogstad asked Koopmans to try on the jacket that he confirmed he was wearing on the night of the incident, March 30, 2013.

A man was sent to hospital Sunday after the phone booth he was using in downtown Coalmont was struck and destroyed by an oncoming vehicle.

The victim, who was treated at Princeton Hospital and released, has been identified by witnesses as Warren Spence of Coalmont.

RCMP detachment commander Barry Kennedy described the incident, which occurred about noon, was “very bizarre.”

Kennedy said police believe the crash was not accidental.

“According to witnesses, the driver of the vehicle recognized the male in the phone booth, and then turned his vehicle around in order to line his car up

with the phone booth. The driver then took aim at the phone booth and ‘gunned’ the car toward the phone booth, driving right through it and striking the male standing inside,” said an RCMP press release.

“For the guy on the other end of that phone it must have been a heck of a call,” said Kennedy, in a follow up interview with The Spotlight.

Kennedy added “there is a lot of rumor about the motive…but I have not been able to confirm it.”

The driver of the car was also injured and remains in hospital, said Kennedy.

Charges are pending against a man, also from Coalmont. “We are prepared to lay charges,” said Kennedy. “We’re ready to go and waiting for Crown to approve them and which ones they are going to approve.”

A group of local artists is hoping to contribute to the community’s overall health by beautifying the Princeton General Hospital and Cascade Medical Centre.

A working group of the Princeton Health Steering Committee recently presented a number of recommenda-tions for better health care aesthetics, and group leader Ed Staples said the artists are already planning first-step improvements.

“This started out simply as an idea that it would be nice to make the facil-ities more welcoming, and hopefully have an effect on people’s health. We were all pleasantly surprised that there is a lot of research on the value of having appropriate art and the inclu-sion of art in health care facilities,” said Staples in an interview with The Spotlight.

“It can actually decrease the amount of time somebody spends in a hospital recuperating,” said Staples, who is also the president of Support Our Health Care. He added that a more visually pleasing environment would also benefit hospital visitors and staff.

“Everything we have read so far supports the notion that whatever you can do in terms of color schemes and art work for the patients and the staff, the net effect is you are going to have a positive outcome on the health of individuals.”

Staples said improvements might be noticeable in a matter of months. “The one thing that we are pretty sure

we are going to get started with as the first project is each of the members of the committee has identified a space or a project that we can each work on.”

All members of the working group are active and well known in the Princeton arts community. Staples plans to create a tile mosaic for one of the hospital’s bare walls with the help of Dr. Ella Munro, while Nienke Klaver is sketching out a Japanese garden for the concrete area in front of the hospital’s main entrance, and wants to create a children’s space for the waiting room at Cascades. Committee members Susan Delatour and Merrilyn Huycke are also putting together plans for individual projects.

A tour of the health care facili-ties revealed dated color schemes and faded art, said Staples.

“I would suspect that the painting of the facility and the hanging of the artwork is probably original,” said Staples.

Staples characterized the hospital’s present colors of bright pink and forest green as “institutional” and “aestheti-cally unacceptable,” but acknowl-edged changing the color of the walls would be an involved project.

All improvements and changes will need to be approved by the steering committee and other officials, said Staples. While the artists currently involved are donating their time and talents in future there may be fundrais-ing or grant applications to subsidize the cost of materials.

“I’m looking forward to it. It’s kind of an exciting project.”

Improving Princeton’s health through color and art

For five years Princeton Valley First has been helping “Feed the Valley.”

The program to support the local food bank is celebrating its fifth anniversary, and announced last week a total of $36,000 and 1,400 pounds of food has been raised by the local Valley First branch for the Princeton Food

Bank operated by the Princeton Baptist Church.

Across the region $915,000 has been raised in the last five years.

“When we launched Feed the Valley five years ago, we chal-lenged ourselves to reach the mil-lion dollar mark in 10 years,” says Valley First President Paulette

Rennie in a media release. “To be closing in on that target after just five years is absolutely phe-nomenal.”

In addition to the monetary donations, through Feed the Valley, Valley First has collected in excess of 62,000 pounds of food.

Koopmans was asked to hide a plas-tic representation of the vodka bottle Koopmans had allegedly left Elaine Hoiland’s residence with as well as an inoperable air gun representing the alleged murder weapon. While attempting to store both items in the jacket, Koopmans was asked to make a hugging motion.

This is in reference to the testimony of Bradley Martin, who said he saw Koopmans hug Rosemary Fox when entering the Wharton residence that evening.

Koopmans was unable to conceal both items without the handle of the gun protruding from a pocket.

Koopmans’ arm was also measured with a tape measure, coming in at 28 and a half inches.

Earlier on Thursday, a woman tes-tified who can only be identified as Ms. A due to a publication ban on her identity.

She had previously had a relation-ship with Koopmans and described him as a “teddy bear” and said it was “hard for him to watch” Wharton’s drug use.

“Keith’s dad on his death bed asked him to please take care of my son,” Ms. A said.

She also said that “everyone in town knew Keith was a drug dealer” and said Rosemary Fox would do “anything for a hit.”

On Wednesday the Crown began questioning its last witness, Cpl. Darren Kakuno.

Kakuno was the primary investiga-tor in Koopmans’ case.

He was questioned on key points of the investigation including a footprint found near the scene, security footage from the nearby Weyerhaeuser Mill property and the underwater recovery of a .357 magnum handgun from the Similkameen river.

Kakuno located a footprint between 20-foot high log stacks on the mill property, which borders the Wharton property where the alleged shooting took place. From there he initiated a search of the Similkameen river near the log stacks with an RCMP underwa-ter dive team. The dive team searched the river three times. In October 2013, the third and final search of the river turned up a .357 magnum on the bot-tom of the riverbed with the help of metal detectors.

Kakuno said during cross examina-tion that he and his team followed up with neighbourhood inquiries attempt-ing to identify any of the vehicles in the video, as well as the male and female walking past the parking lot.

Kakuno said he was unable to find any further information through those inquiries.

Skogstad pointed out that there were a total of 60 officers involved in the case, though he did not press Kakuno to confirm the exact number.

Koopmans denies slayings

Princeton in the past month, and a cor-responding spike of trucks stolen from other centres and recovered here, have police urging the public to be vigilant.

Ten pick up trucks were stolen in Princeton RCMP territory in March, according to detachment sergeant Barry Kennedy.

“ The trucks all seem to have been left unlocked and in some cases, keys are in the vehicles,” said Kennedy. “[The thieves] don’t have to break windows, locks or hot wire the vehi-cle, they just get in the truck and go.”

Kennedy said it is unlikely the people responsible for the thefts are from Princeton.

“I don’t think so. We are not getting enough intelligence back to use, either people telling us stuff or us finding trends, to think there is a co-ordination out of Princeton.”

In March a further five stolen trucks, taken from other areas in the Similkameen and Okanagan Valleys, have been recovered undamaged in Princeton.

“It sounds very organized,” he said. “We’re finding vehicles here stolen from other towns and to me that says those vehicles came here and either ran out of gas, broke down or were dumped to steal another vehicle.”

Kennedy said one plausible theory is that the stolen trucks are being used to help the thieves commit other crimes. In one case he said there were three break and enters in the same area

that a truck was stolen, on the same night. In another case a stolen truck was linked to credit card fraud and several weeks ago a truck stolen in Princeton was used during a robbery in Chase.

Kennedy said the public’s assis-tance is required to catch the thieves, which means people phoning police if they see a suspicious vehicle driv-ing slowly around neighborhoods, “Those are the calls we need because those are the calls that are going to help solve this.”

Kennedy said anyone witnessing an attempted vehicle theft should not intervene, but call 911.

“When it comes down to it its your truck. You don’t want to take a beat-ing or get seriously injured for your truck,” he said. “These guys are des-perate. You don’t know if they have weapons on them but they are fully prepared to steal and fully prepared to get away.”

He also urged all truck and car owners to ensure their vehicles are kept locked at all times.

VICTORIA – Why did the B.C. government suddenly slam the door on their old friend George Abbott, after spending months recruiting him to head up the B.C. Treaty Commission?

The instant media narrative, embraced by a shocked Abbott and then by NDP leader John Horgan, was that this was payback for grievances nursed by Premier Christy Clark from the 2011 B.C. Liberal leadership contest.

Done on a whim, Horgan said after a week grilling Clark and Aboriginal Relations Minister John Rustad. Clark is suddenly a sore winner, lashing out, wrecking two decades of careful and costly treaty-making.

Like many instant media narratives, this one makes no sense and is almost certainly wrong.

If Clark was resentful about the roasting she received from leadership rivals Abbott and Kevin Falcon, she had an odd way of showing it. She appointed Falcon as finance minister to drive a stake into the harmonized sales tax, and Abbott as education min-ister to fashion a pre-election truce with the ever-hostile teachers’ union. Both completed their unlikely tasks and retired as heroes of the party in 2013.

Outgoing chief treaty commissioner Sophie Pierre was as dis-mayed as anyone at the news of Abbott’s demise. While the two were in transition meetings, Pierre learned that she was not being replaced, leaving the federal-provincial-First Nations Summit partnership of 22 years in a shambles.

Clark went further when questioned by reporters about the sud-den reversal. The future of aboriginal relations in B.C. may or may not include the B.C. Treaty Commission.

“There have been some results, but four treaties in 22 years for $600 million is not enough result,” Clark said. “We have to be able to move faster, and we have to find a way to include more First Nations in the process.”

That $600 million is mostly loans, from the federal government

to First Nations to finance treaty talks. Of every $100 spent trying to honour the century-old duty to sign treaties across B.C., $80 is a loan from Ottawa, $12 is a grant from Ottawa and $8 is a grant from B.C.

The plan was for First Nations to repay their loans out of cash settlements made to them for 100-odd years of uncompensated resource extraction, which is now accepted as being con-trary to British and Canadian law.

It was the blunt-spoken Pierre who first acknowledged this hasn’t worked. Some of the 50 First Nations stuck at the treaty table have borrowed too much to go on, she said last year,

calling for an “exit strategy” that forgives debt.The probability of the B.C. government making this decision

without talking to the federal paymaster is exactly zero. I’m told the province’s clumsy timing had something to do with Ottawa’s late demands.

I asked Clark if her plan to settle land claims faster was any-thing like the 2009 attempt by Gordon Campbell’s deputy minister Jessica McDonald to negotiate a province-wide deal declaring aboriginal title. Clark sidestepped the question, saying only that the 150 B.C. First Nations not at the treaty table need a say and a solution too.

(McDonald now faces a similar legal gridlock as the Clark-appointed CEO of BC Hydro, trying to build the Site C dam.)

Pierre, a veteran administrator from the Ktunaxa Tribal Council in the Kootenays, made a prophetic statement when her term as chief commissioner was extended three years ago. She said if Ottawa isn’t prepared to give federal negotiators a realistic man-date on compensation and sharing of salmon rights, they should “shut ’er down.”

Treaty trouble has deep roots

playgroundThe provincial government is not exactly

behaving well on the playground, with the introduction of Bill 11.

The pain of the teachers’ strike still lingers. It is a time when legislators should be speaking to teachers and school boards with their nice, indoor voices, trying to make friends and even maybe sharing a snack.

The province promised to fund the costly teacher’s agreement that ended the protracted labor dispute, but dealt a $54 million budget shortfall to local school boards off the bottom of the deck.

That’s tough to be sure. However there is only so much money to spend and school board trustees– while not liking it – understand that as well as any other elected official.

Bill 11 goes a step too far by giving the Minister of Education the power to replace trustees if they do not comply with provincial directives.

Don’t be confused – the power the govern-ment is usurping does not belong to boards. It belongs to citizens who have the right to cast ballots to elect school board trustees.

If nothing else it would be more seemly to wait and see if local boards can actually come up with the required consolidation and cost sharing plans – by buying pencils in bulk and turning down the heat– before aggressive or threatening gestures are made.

The government also announced changes to professional development for teachers, with-out any consultation with the BC Teacher’s Federation and no advanced warning.

It’s a move that smacks of posturing, and power struggling, and it’s vaguely insulting.

After all the name calling, polarization and accusations that characterized the 2014 teach-ers’ strike, it is the worst time possible to be playing these games at recess. - AD

The top four most stressful jobs, accord-ing to last year’s CarreerCast.Com’s report, are as follows and in order: enlisted military personnel, military general, firefighter, and airplane pilot.

That shouldn’t surprise anyone. All these professions share elements of personal risk and tremendous responsibility for the lives and wellbeing of others.

That said, anyone who doesn’t understand the most stressful job in the world is that of parent is deluded. Like being in the army it involves elements of personal risk and tremendous responsibility for the lives and wellbeing of others. Plus the pay is lousy.

Number five on the list seems a bit odd at first blush. The job of event coordina-tor doesn’t sound that stressful, until you consider how much it has in common with parenting.

This is always especially apparent at the end of March Break, after fourteen consecu-

tive days of listening to how the whole family is dying of boredom. (Year after year I forget to book the brass band and bouncy castle).

Monday morning the middle DeMeer son routed desperately in his backpack for a book he was supposed to read over the hiatus. At least he managed to look sheepish as he headed down the driveway mumbling something about trying to get in a few chapters on the bus.

We can pass over numbers six and seven on the list – public relations executive and senior corporate executive. If stress is cen-tral to these jobs it may be because they are so easily placed to make life hard for people doing the eighth most stressful job.

That’s the job of reporter.While discussing the merits of this column

over dinner the oldest DeMeer child still living at home point-ed his fork across the table and proclaimed the whole reason I broached the subject was to cre-ate a way to slip that nugget of information into print. Further, he maintained that reporting by nature is not a stressful occupa-tion. It simply attracts people who are by nature highly prone to stress.

Being a reporter, like being a parent, often exposes one to

unfair criticism. It’s quite stressful.Police officer and taxi driver round off

the top ten most stressful jobs and it’s hard-ly worth detailing the many commonalities these professions have with being a fulltime Mom or Dad.

The only real surprise with this list is the absence of fast food server - also a job that

falls under the parent umbrella. Next to minor sports referees I’ve witnessed more abuse of people serving coffee and hamburgers than any other worker. I’ve also watched the back end of a drive thru window at Tim Horton’s, where a digital clock ticks away every second it takes to serve each and every customer, 24-hours a day.

And I thought I had lots of deadlines.

CareerCast.com rates the least stressful jobs as audiologist (it’s pretty quiet) hairstyl-ist (hair always grows back) jeweler (you wait all day on people who are getting engaged, married, or celebrating a special event) and tenured university professor (no possibility ever of being fired.)

I can’t imagine what any of those careers would be like, and I don’t think any of them have much to do with raising children.

When Nancy Allison, lead orga-nizer for the Chopaka Rodeo, sat down with Linda and me at our kitchen table last week, her smile and sparkling eyes quickly con-vinced me she’s a zealot.

“I’ve been at this for 50 years,” was her response to my initial ques-tion. “I was 9 at the time of the first rodeo. My Dad, Barney Allison, was one of the organizers. It began on his ranch, and although he is gone, it is still there. First everyone went to church. After church some people began doing calf roping for fun. From that small beginning it developed into a very successful rodeo.”

A popular event on the ama-teur rodeo circuit, it attracts contes-tants and spectators from the Coast, Williams Lake, Washington State and elsewhere. Events include bullriding, bareback, saddlebronc, team roping, ladies, junior and Pee Wee barrels, and more. “Wild Cow Milking is a crowd pleaser,” Nancy said.

The Kids Calf Scramble requires contestants to chase and snatch rib-bons from the ears of calves.

According to Nancy, the rodeo

is a good place for young contes-tants to practise their techniques. In addition to an added purse of at least $500, winners of major events will receive a coveted silver buckle crafted by Montana Silversmith.

“In the early years the cowboys went out and caught wild horses for the rodeo,” Nancy said. “Now all contest animals are supplied by contractors. Each time an animal (rough stock) supplied by a contrac-tor exits the chute it costs $150.”

One of the contestants, Chad Eneaus, began riding saddle broncs at age 14, and bulls when he was 16. He won the Canadian High School Bronc Riding Championship. He is a member of the Western Indian Rodeo Association and won the Saddle Bronc Championship in 2010. He has won prize money in a number of rodeos and I felt fortunate in tracking him down. He told me, “in the beginning it was kind of a saving grace. It gave me an opportunity to challenge myself emotionally, mentally and spiritu-ally.”

When I asked Chad about the dangers, he replied, “in one rodeo a bull threw me and then planted its rear hoofs on my chest. Both my lungs collapsed and my liver was

lacerated.” He paused a moment and then said, “you have to know when to get a new hold, and when to let go. You don’t have a second to think. It has to be automatic. You have to figure out how to work with the animal. The ground is the best teacher. It hurts when you land.”

Hay rancher Linnea Cappos has been part of the rodeo since 1979. “I rodeoed hard for 40 years in the barrel event,” she told me in a phone conversation. “I competed in the Barrel Racing event. Now I just help the girls make it happen. I’m involved with the paperwork and I also prepare the ground for the Barrel Racing. It’s a timed event and the footing needs to be secure for the horses so they don’t get hurt. The rodeo has given me a lot of satisfaction,” she said. “Now I just want to give something back.”

Linnea loves the family atmo-sphere. “When I get there, I head first to where they make the Fried Bread. People sit on blankets or lawn chairs. There are no bleach-ers. Some sit on the tailgates of pickups. It’s pretty informal.” She has gotten her 4 year old grand daughter Sophie involved in Barrel Racing. “She does it because I do it,” she said. “Like me, she loves

horses.”I asked Nancy about the level of

danger for contestants. “The saddle events are probably more danger-ous than the bareback ones,” she replied. “A rider can get hooked on the saddle horn and be dragged along by the horse. One year a rider caught a hoof in his chest. I had to drive him and the first aid attendants to the clinic. On the way they shouted at me to stop because they had lost him. They pounded on his chest and he came back. After a few days in the hospital he

was fine.”“This year we’ll probably get at

least 1000 spectators, if the weath-er’s good. I tell people to bring their coolers, bikinis, mackinaws and lawn chairs. The entrance fee is only $10.00 and free for kids 10 and under. The show begins at 10 am.”

After listening to Chad and Linda, I’m quite content to let oth-ers do the bronco and bull riding. The fried bread sounds pretty good though.

Paul Gabriel was one of more than 50 Special Olympic athletes who attended the Special Olympics Regional Qualifier for Alpine Skiing at Silver Star Mountain, Vernon, B.C. Competition was tough in the Super Giant Slalom race, Intermediate Division. Paul gave his best and earned a second place finish with a time of 2 minutes 23.08 seconds. He had to work hard and fast in the sec-ond race, a Giant Slalom, Intermediate Division and came away with another second place finish.

Princeton toddler is cancer free and coming home

To the editorThis cycle of

Hayley’s treatment has allowed our fam-ily to come home quite often. After getting out and about I have real-ized how many of you are genuinely waiting to hear about Hayley’s progress and journey.

There are a lot of people that will not understand or have trou-bles imagining each bit of information we share regarding Hayley’s treatment. So my plan is to keep things (kind of) short and sweet.

Hayley has been can-cer free after the first 29 days of treatment!!! She started treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia mid October and has been continu-ing to remain success-ful. Treatment is broken down into five cycles which all contain differ-ent amounts and varia-tions of chemotherapy.

She is truly doing

very well. We are so proud of her strength and ability to maintain such happiness.

If there are no delays, our family should be able to move back home by the end of June, which marks the completion of her eight months of intense che-motherapy. Hayley will also be proudly return-ing home with a new baby sister!

She will continue a far less intense treatment for another year and half. This will require monthly visits back to Vancouver.

There are of course risks of relapse but they are not high. The plan is to stay positive, happy and healthy!

Thank you to every-one for supporting Hayley and our family. You have all been so humble and gracious.

Spotlight StaffA reduction in the pool requisition

means taxes in Area H will float under the RDOS average this year.

The Regional District Okanagan Similkameen recently approved its 2015 budget. The average homeowner in Area H will see a reduction of $16.84 over last years’s requisition.

“A lot of it had to do with the reduced requisition of the pool,” Area H director Bob Coyne said. “There were things that increased, fire protec-tion increased, there was an increase in the trails budget, and an increase in general government. But our major thing is the recreation. We’re not pay-ing anymore into the reserves there’s enough in there.”

The Rural Princeton Recreation requisition of just under $20,000 was cut completely from the budget.

This year’s budget includes an increase of $19,173 to the Tulameen

Recreation Commission. The com-mission will now receive funding of $33,342 from RDOS.

The Town of Princeton’s RDOS budget decreased significantly over last year’s. The average ratepayer will now only pay $26.72 compared to $65.73 in 2014 a reduction of $39.01.

The majority of the decrease can be attributed to the removal of the recre-ation operating costs from the RDOS budget line. Recreational facilities in Princeton are now operated by the Town of Princeton.

Shared services including general governance and regional trails had increased budgets across the RDOS.

The RDOS is undergoing a major office renovation to its offices in Penticton, while the trails department plans to hire a seasonal employee to take inventory of trail assets this sum-mer.

A day to kick off the tourist season in Princeton and the Similkameen Valley is set for Wednesday April 8th at the town’s Riverside Community Centre.

The annual event will include an afternoon of workshops – open to all people in business, as well as tourism operators – and will feature the unveiling of the 2015 Travel Experiences Guide published in coop-eration with The Similkameen Spotlight and Keremeos Review.

Those planning to attend must register for the free workshop “Managing you ‘Google My Business’ list-ing with Jody Wall, followed by a 30 minute question and answer session on www.similkameenvalley.com website.

Spotlight StaffA town manager has a request of people who have

questions or concerns about municipal practices.“Please pick up the phone and call the office direct-

ly,” said Kevin Huey, director of Princeton’s parks and infrastructure.

“If people want to pick up the phone and just say ‘what’s going on here,’ then we have an opportunity to explain.”

Huey was responding to a question about a pic-ture and comments that appeared recently on a local Facebook group. The picture showed a town sweeper parked on the side of the road leading to the public works yard and the post indicated the truck was dump-ing sweepings in the river.

There were numerous comments on the Princeton and Area Issues public group page. The post was later removed.

“The picture was very deceiving,” said Huey, who added the photo was forwarded to him by a member of the media. “It wasn’t near the river, we don’t dump ever near the river.”

Huey said the truck was emptying about three wheelbarrows worth of sweepings onto the ground, and he later took his own photos to be able to document what had happened.

“This is why I don’t like Facebook…typically we [town staff] don’t go on and we don’t respond.”

The Similkameen Valley Riders ATV Club will be holding its first-meeting of the season on Saturday, April 11th at 3 p.m. in the meet-ing room of Vermilion Forks Restaurant, 157 Vermilion Ave. in Princeton (formerly the Bellaire).

A speaker from ATV BC will speak on the new regulations of ATV riding and answer questions.

BUDGET INFORMATION MEETINGS

Copper Mountain Mine Ltd. of Princeton has received a Mine Safety Award from the B.C. government.

The company received the Edward Prior Award, which is presented to operations with 200,000 to 1 mil-lion worker hours and the lowest injury-fre-quency rate.

“Mines are a central part of the economy in the Fraser-Nicola region, providing thousands of jobs and contributing to our strong economy,” said Jackie Tegart, MLA for Fraser-Nicola. “Copper Mountain Mine’s commitment to safety ensures that their workers return home

safe every day, provid-ing peace of mind to their families and com-munities.”

Copper Mountain is one of five new mines that have opened in B.C. since the start of the provincial government’s B.C. Jobs Plan in 2011.

The Mine Safety Awards were presented to mines and quarries operating in British Columbia that had the lowest injury-frequency rate during the previ-ous calendar year. The companies acknowl-edged are leaders in workplace safety in an industry that is critical to B.C.’s diverse, strong and growing economy.

This past year saw

a decrease in the total estimated injury rate at mines in B.C. as well as a decrease in the number of days lost to injury.

B.C.’s mining indus-try remains one of the safest heavy indus-

tries in the province, a direct reflection of the co-operative effort of mine employees, mine management and unions and the sector’s com-mitment to maintaining high health and safety standards.

Stewart McEwen of Tu-lameen, BC. passed away aft er a brief illness on March 25, 2015 at the age of 66 years. Stewart was born on May 10, 1948 in Vancouver where he later attended Killarney

Secondary School. He will be lovingly re-membered and sadly missed by his wife of 47 years Georgina McEwen, sons Gordon, Martin, and Darren, sister Dianne (Barry) Roberts, grandchildren Dylan, Samantha, Britney, and Cole, niece Vanessa and neph-ews James and Kevin (Julie) Roberts. Th ere will be a celebration of life at 3:00 PM on Saturday April 4, 2015 at the Tulameen Community Hall. Stewart’s wishes are for his family and friends to, “party the night away” following a dinner at the hall. Please consider making a donation in Stewart’s memory to your favorite charity. Terry suddenly passed away in his home in Tulameen, B.C. on March 15, 2015 due to cancer related causes. His loving companion and friend, Betty was by his side. Terry loved life and made his family happy. He had an interesting sense of humour and made many people laugh! He enjoyed Ocean Fishing, Hunting, Gardening and nature and many of us reaped the benefi ts because of his generosity!Predeceased by his father Frederick Hobbs, mother Mabel Kristine Edvarda Kent (nee Reitan), step-father Sidney Arthur Kent.Survived by his sister Lynette (husband Wayne), brothers Grant Hobbs and Robert Kent, nieces and nephews; Erik, Erin, Brian, Michael, Madison and Elliott. Also his loving companion, Betty Van Luttervelt and all her family and many other friends.
