Paul Gabriel, Judy Short, Jeannie Walker, Charlotte Sellers, Ally Myers and Councillor Doug Pateman joined organizer Johanna Nott for the Community Clean Up held this past Sunday.

The group donned vests and gloves, armed themselves with garbage bags and set out to clean up various areas of Princeton.

Kelley Cook and Vic Sagorski joined in the event, but concentrated their efforts on cleaning up water bodies in the area.

“It was an awesome job for just that many people,” said Nott, “I really appreciate all those who came out.”

At the end of the four hour event, the Town of Princeton truck was filled with garbage, card-board and all sorts of debris the group had col-lected. Beside the truck were numerous propane tanks, an old stove and other metal parapherna-lia.

Participants were treated to lunch at Two Rivers Park compliments of The Vermilion Trail Society (VTS) and Cooper’s Foods. VTS vice president, Ernie (Sam) Rice and director George Coey hosted the lunch on behalf of the society.

Three presentations were made during the Community Forest meeting held at the Riverside Centre on Saturday, April 13. Numerous individuals representing the communities of Area H attended the afternoon session.

RDOS Area H director Brad Hope chaired the meeting and introduced guest speakers, Rob Smylie, Rob Marshall, Timberlands division of Weyerhaeuser and Heather Larratt of Larratt Aquatic Consulting.

Smylie presented the pet oxygen mask kits from Wag’N O2 Fur Life®, that he had introduced in the community of Princeton two weeks earlier. It was unanimously agreed by the group that each of the communities would like to have access

to the life saving masks for pets. Smylie assured them that he would continue his fundraising efforts in order to supply all the interested areas with the $170 kits.

Hope and Marshall explained the Community Forest, an equal partnership between the RDOS, Upper Similkameen Indian Band and the Town of Princeton.

The Vermilion Forks Community Forest Corporation (VFCFC) has an industry partner - Weyerhaeuser, which man-ages the timber operations of approximately 11,000 hectares of forest lands surrounding Princeton. The product harvested and sold by the corporation results in funding for the partners to distribute back into their communities.

As the snow disappears and spring flowers are showing the first signs of life, we take the opportu-nity to honour our volunteers for their contributions. They are much like the signs of spring – cheery, bright, fresh and very welcome in our lives! We are very grateful to those who volunteer in our programs and assist us in providing the services that support vulnerable individuals. Our successes would be fewer without their assistance.

We also want to acknowledge the many other vol-unteers in our community, those hard working folks who contribute many hours of their time to ensure our community flourishes. Thanks to these volunteers, our organization has been the recipient of a number of generous donations that will enable us to enhance our services. The volunteers that are involved with

organizations such as Crisis Assistance, the Hospital Auxiliary, Lion’s Club, OAP #185, Fish & Game Club, Princeton Arts Council and the Princeton Golf Course (just to name a few) have assisted in the fun-draising efforts that support our programs and many other community projects and non-profit organiza-tions. Volunteering is hard work and requires dedi-cation and commitment. It is fitting that “Volunteer Week” is an officially recognized time to show appreciation for these individuals!

Several individuals have also assisted us over the past year, giving freely of their time, creativity and financial assistance. We can’t thank you enough for all you’ve done. Groceries for our New Beginnings Program, donations for the Adult Day Program bazaar, tickets for cultural events, bottles and cash for our men’s program and plants and flowers to celebrate the seasons have been generously provided by thoughtful individuals and greatly appreciated by our clients and staff.

Please accept our sincere thanks for a job well done! We are most appreciative.

A rural collector with purpose

So, what does a fel-low do after he retires from the sport fishing equipment business....

Well, if you are Randy Halyk, you keep yourself busy until your wife retires as well and then you move to an area that you both love.

In April of 2012, the Halyk’s left Kitimat to retire in the beauty of Tulameen.

Randy and Linda as well as their chil-dren and grandchil-dren absolutely love the area.

“The kids were so excited we moved here,” said Halyk.

Now they are closer to their family in Surrey and Langley, and the Halyk’s are very happy about getting to see their children and grandchil-dren more often.

The couple have been “enjoying life,” as Halyk puts it, however, “I got a little bit bored,” he said.

He met Lori Northway, who was “looking to download her business.”

“I saw an opportunity, bought her business assets and away I went,” he said.

Northway took Halyk around her route for two weeks—introducing him to customers in Tulameen, Coalmont and ranches on the out-skirts of Princeton and providing the opportunity to get to know the area more.

Similkameen Rural Collection and Recycle Services is geared towards residents who have no curbside pick up service.

The service includes two bags of garbage per household. The bags must have the area tags on them.

For a minimal quarterly or yearly contract, pick up is provided. The service can be extended to include recycling with your contract for an additional $30 per year.

Halyk is not limiting himself to just residential services, he welcomes rural business as well and says he is available to do light hauling too.

“Give me a call for Free Dump Days,” he said, I’ll pick up and take to the dump for you.

Sandy and Bob Spring have generously donated a framed print to the Princeton Hospital Auxiliary. The print entitled, “My New Blue Desk” is 12”x 18” with a 20”x 28” black gallery frame with double matting and glass. The print is a watercolour done by local artist Sandy Spring. Sandy is a figurative water colour artist specializing in animals and people. The print will be on display at the Hospital auxiliary thrift store at 251 Vermillion as of May 1st. We will be having a raffle, and proceeds will be going to our various endeavours. The draw will take place June 26 at the Thrift store. Tickets will be on sale at the store for the two months and will be $1.00 each. The store is open Wednesday to Friday from 10 – 4 p.m. The Auxiliary would like to express many thanks to Sandy and Bob Spring.

“Third in a series on party platforms.”VICTORIA – The B.C. Liberal Party deserves

credit for releasing its policy book in full on the eve of the formal election campaign.

That’s about the only positive thing to be said about it.

For those who take the time to read party leader Christy Clark’s 40-page booklet, there are a few nug-gets of news. For instance, a re-elected B.C. Liberal government would continue its justice reform agenda by moving traffic ticket disputes out of courtrooms, as they did with impaired driving cases.

Most of it consists of glowing descriptions of the government’s 12-year record, and attacks on the NDP of the kind that are not normally seen in a platform. This is consistent with Clark’s style since she was anointed party leader two years ago.

The main focus, as revealed in February’s throne speech, is a plan to pay off B.C.’s growing debt and perhaps even get rid of the provincial sales tax with an Alberta-style “prosperity fund” from liquefied natural gas exports.

Whether this is from imposing a new export tax on LNG or simply from a windfall of gas royalties is not clear. Clark and her energy minister contradicted each other on that when it was announced, and the platform doesn’t shed any new light. All we have is a big logo on the side of Clark’s campaign bus declaring “DEBT FREE B.C.”

As I’ve written before, there is plenty of real evidence of a huge new LNG industry in the making. As for paying off the $60 billion debt that the B.C. Liberals’ pre-election budget predicts will keep growing, cartoonist Adrian Raeside summed it up best: LNG revenues are “Christy Clark’s invisible friend.”

Clark finished up last week with stops in Terrace and Prince Rupert, promising an LNG windfall for local governments as well.

She repeated the platform’s attack line that the NDP are going to wreck the trillion-dollar LNG boom with a Quebec-style moratorium on “fracking” to extract gas from deep shale formations.

That’s not an outright lie, but it’s almost as specu-lative as Clark’s notions of a 30-year windfall that could at best barely start during the next four-year term.

The NDP are not calling for a moratorium on natural gas production. They’re calling for yet anoth-er “review,” one of many vague, wobbly positions that have been adopted by both dominant parties.

An earlier premier named Glen Clark became famous for “freezing” things like ferry fares and car

insurance rates. Now Christy Clark is “freezing” personal income tax rates for five years, and carbon tax rates too. That implies she’s planning to win this election and the next one, at a time when it is unclear whether she can even hold her own seat in Vancouver-Point Grey.

The B.C. Liberals will cut small business taxes by a point, some time in the next five years. They will also increase income tax on large businesses and personal income of more than $150,000, but that’s not mentioned in their platform, since it goes against 12 years of their policy as a government.

• A clarification of last week’s column on the B.C. Conservative platform. Leader John Cummins informs me his plan to phase out the carbon tax does not include reversing the personal and busi-ness income tax rate reductions that were legislated as the fuel tax reached its current level.

With a provincial election less than a month away, it is time for voters to prepare to cast their ballots.

The election, on May 14, will set the direction for the province over the next few years.

At present, several candidates have come forward in the riding of Penticton and we could easily see more come forward in the days ahead.

The role of an MLA is an important one as each elected member is responsible to represent the wishes of his or her constituents to the provincial legislature in Victoria.

It is important to take an interest in the election process and in the decisions made at the provincial level afterward.

Sadly, the level of voter involvement has been declining.

In the last provincial election, held in 2009, only 50.99 per cent of eligible B.C. voters cast their bal-lots. In Princeton area 2,091 out of 3,256 registered voters came out.

The decisions made in the legislature will affect us all.

Learn a bit about each of the candidates, their parties and their platforms.

Ask them to explain themselves on any point which seems unclear.

It is up to the voting public to set the agenda in this election. It is up to the voters to determine the issues they consider important and to ask the candi-dates to explain their positions on these issues.

There are opportunities to raise these questions at the All Candidates Forum.

This year the forum will be at the Legion on Wednesday May 1, 6:30 p.m. You can forward your question to the Princeton and Area Chamber of Commerce by April 26, or ask your question from the floor.

Then, on May 14, please take the time to vote.

Hayes Creek Fire Rescue is a small, uncertified fire hall serving the Osprey, Chain, Link lakes area of approximately 350 households, most of which are seasonal.

They have a pumper truck, a pumper 2000 gallon tanker, a medi-cal first responder truck and 20 volunteers.

Resident Don Moyes, retired Vancouver battalion chief, started the medical portion of the depart-ment to serve Hayes Creek members at fire calls in case of injury and collapse. The department quickly expanded to serve all residents in the fire district and now has six oxygen therapy units, two heart defibril-lators, three aid trauma kits and a rescue boggan on tires and skis to access victims in remote and back country areas.

The medical first responders are trained to responder level one and are recertified with a two day course every three years.

If a party calls 911 in Hayes Creek district for an ambulance, Kelowna dispatch sends out an ambulance and Hayes Creek first responder unit to the address at the same time.

Depending on travel distance, one of our members is on scene with patient in 3 to 12 minutes and an ambulance from Princeton or Summerland is on scene between 45 minutes to one hour.

The emergency could be an MVA, heart attack, stroke, short-ness of breath, collapse, trauma, fractures, etc.

First responder protocol and forms are standard province wide and involve the questions, “am I safe? are there hazards like live wires? assault? crime scene? self harm? suicide? preservation of evi-dence?” These are quickly done by first responders in scene assessment then the responders move on to introduction and asking permission to treat the patient(s)

When permission is granted, one first responder provides appropriate treatment while a second records all patient data on a form to be passed on to ambulance crew and to stay with patient in primary medi-

cal care. Patient data forms include name, address, medical card number, chief complaint, method of injury, medical history, patient medications, and vital signs...(oxygen percentage in blood, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, pain level, other injuries found etc.

Patient vitals are taken and recorded every 10 minutes and when the higher trained ambulance crew arrives, they can see at a glance all the relevant information and see if the patient is going down-hill or improving while the patient/first responder exchange protocol is being done

The ambulance crew carries on with a higher level of patient care and first responders assist with spine board, chair cot, bed cot or what-ever the ambulance crew asks of them and then they assist with load-ing patient and caring for personal affects.

The average time from 911 call to patient reaching the nearest hos-pital in Penticton is about 4.5 hours with a stop in Princeton to stabilize patient and a 120 kilometer trip from there to Penticton.

So much for the “magic hour” of time from 911 call to meaningful medical intervention at a function-ing ER, OR and diagnostics. First responder provides primary medi-cal care in just minutes and is a life saver in many heart attack, stroke or extreme trauma situations..

First medical response is now provided in the Osprey Lake area by trained folks who, like you read-ing this article, felt abandoned by their provincial government with the closing of Princeton Hospital ER. Feeling the need to do what they could for themselves….going beyond their previous experiences, jobs and comfort levels they got the necessary training and are now the “pointy end” of primary medical care in their community. There is satisfaction and pride in getting the job done and giving back to their community.

There are senior folks in this community who had their homes for sale—this first responder service has given them some sense of comfort and knowledge that positive help is close at hand and the “magic hour” is again in place.

“There are numerous people who pick up trash during their daily walks,” said Nott, “I’d like to thank them too.”

As part of the Earth Day celebration plan-ning, Nott issued a challenge to the schools in the community to participate in cleaning up for Earth Day.

On Monday, John Allison and Vermilion Forks Elementary Schools traveled to various streets and parks in the community and cleaned up.

Bob Wicks and members of Princeton Ground Search and Rescue plan to clean up along Highway 5A up past Sunflower Downs. (Were unavailable on Sunday, but still wish to participate.)

Tires, metal and propane tanks were some of the items Kelley Cook and Vic Sagorski pulled out of places they most certainly do not belong—our lakes, rivers and streams. Furniture, various types of cardboard and debris as well as untold amounts of garbage was gathered and filled the Town of Princeton truck on Sunday. Kudos to the small group of residents who did a very big job. Free Dump days take place this upcoming weekend, talk about timing!What an opportunity for the rest of the community to “pitch in and clean up.”

A discussion held in regards to sharing of funds throughout the communities resulted in the decision to form a committee to represent all of the communities. For the time being, those pres-ent chose to apply funding towards the Osprey and Erris Volunteer Fire Departments.

Both departments have been actively fund-raising, just not able to yet reach their goals to finish the fire halls. They will receive a benefit of $15,000 each.

Heather Larratt, (R.P. Bio) of Larratt Aquatic Consulting came to educate the group on the threats of aquatic invasive species (AIS).

Larratt says the biggest threats are the Zebra and Quagga mussels, New Zealand Mud snails, Didymo (Rock Snot) and the Spiny Water Flea. These species are a threat to plants and animals of B.C., with the freshwater ecosystems being especially vulnerable. These AIS tolerate different environments, adapting rapidly, they reproduce rapidly and can be transported via boats and gear.

Outside of taking over beaches, the mus-sels can cause major damage by clogging water intakes, pumps, and water distribution systems.

“Once they get in, you can’t get them out,” said Larratt.

To further explain her statement Larratt explained the predicament of the Great Lakes.

Within a period of four years, mussels spread throughout all of the Great Lakes. Costs just to manage the infestation from the year 2000 to 2010 was 5 billion dollars.

In December of 2012 it became illegal to transport AIS in B.C. Failure to clean mussels off boats or equipment could result in a fine of up to $100,000.

Public education is key in taking a proactive approach to protecting B.C. from AIS. Larratt suggests a “clean, drain and dry” approach for all boating/sporting equipment when moving from one body of water to another.

Vermilion Forks Field Naturalists enjoyed a beautiful 8 km. walk on Saturday, April 13, along the southern slopes of the Similkameen River in the Hedley area. We climbed up steep slopes to discover an old eagle’s nest, tried a little fishing, and generally appreciated the exercise on the cool but sunny day. Thirteen club members and guests participated in this field trip, led by Rika Ruebsaat, which culminated with a lovely lunch at the Hitching Post.

Our April general meeting was well attended, with approximately 45 people eager to hear Dr.

Jason Jones’ lively and informed discussion on bird migration. His presentation was not only enlightening, but extremely entertaining, and, happily, this very knowledgeable biologist prom-ises to return! Our club sends a big thank you to the Princeton Sandman Inn for providing a com-plimentary room for Dr. Jones.

Next month’s general meeting will be held May 14, 7 p.m., at Riverside Centre, with guest speaker Murphy Schewchuk, freelance writer/photogra-pher, who will proffer strategies and tips for fine nature photography. Our next field trip will be a birding expedition to the South Okanagan on April 27. Please meet at Billy’s at 8:00 am and phone Trish Reid at 295-6002 to confirm.

Bowling for ‘boobies’ packs the lanes

The Bowling for Boobies fundraiser held at Copperhill Lanes on Friday packed the lanes with supporters for Team Breast Friends and their efforts to prepare for their 12th annual Weekend to End Women’s Cancer 60 K walk.


The Breast Friends Team, Paula Anderson of New Westminster and Barb Gagnon of Princeton will be participating in their 12th annual Shoppers Drug Mart Weekend to End Women’s Cancer 60 K walk this year.

With support of Dan and Emily from Copperhill Lanes and Lounge, a fundraiser entitled “Bowling for Boobies” was initiated. Tickets were sold for $25 and the evening hosted a sold-out crowd.

“We could have sold out twice,” said a very excited Gagnon, “the people and the business have been just marvellous with their support.

Volunteers; Karen Norrington,

Faye Niska, Ida Larsen, Maureen Dos Reis and Charlene Longdo along with Emily and Dan helped to make the evening a terrific success.

Outside of helping to “strike out cancer,” attendees enjoyed an eve-ning filled with food, games and prizes.

The Breast Friends Team extends their appreciation to all who attend-ed “Bowling for Boobies,” their vol-unteers and businesses for the “won-derful support.”

Anderson and Gagnon attend-ed the “Bust A Move” event in Vancouver on April 13. The eight hour, all exercise day raised half a million dollars for the BC Cancer Foundation. Gagnon said it was a tough day, but was pleased to be a part of it.

Hello and happy April/May to all our members who are enjoying the summer like weather we have been having up until the weekend of April 19 and 20 where a little bit of winter crept into our lives for a short time. Well, I would like to mention to all our members and the general public that we are having a ham dinner this coming Saturday night and we are expecting a large turn out, so if you out there are interested in a good meal why don’t you join us at the Legion at about 5 p.m., or so and fill yourselves up with this terrific meal.On Sunday April 20 we initiated eight new members into the Legion and as a member of the Executive I would like to welcome them again as I did on Sunday and I hope along with rest of the Executive that they enjoy their time as members of our branch.One of the projects that we are involved in is getting estimates on replac-ing one of the front doors of our building and trying to make it easier for our disabled members to have an easier way to access our building. The new door would be controlled by an electronic access button so they would be able to press this button and the door would open automati-cally for them.Committee chair Neal Cox is involved in renewing our sign that was up on the roof in order to incorporate the new Legion logo and along with that the front of the building, especially the beams will be painted in order for us to spruce up the front of our building.

For those looking for a light lunch, consider the following recipe for “Nicoise Pasta Lunchbox” from Rachael Anne Hill and Tamsin Burnett-Hall’s “The Powerfood Cookbook: Great Recipes for High Energy and Healthy Weight-Loss” (Ryland, Peters & Small).

Nicoise Pasta LuNchboxServes 2

40 grams whole-wheat pasta rotini4 ounces green beans, cut into thirds1 egg1/3 cup imported black olives61/2 ounces canned tuna steak in spring

water, drained and flaked

1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved2 small heads Bibb lettuce, leaves separated

Dressing1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon

juice1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil1 small garlic clove, crushed2 heaping tablespoons chopped fresh

basilSea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Cook the pasta in a saucepan of lightly salted boiling water for about 12 minutes or until tender. Add the green beans to the pan for the last 3 minutes of cooking time. Drain the pasta and beans, then refresh briefly with cold water.

Meanwhile, add the egg to a small sauce-

pan of cold water. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 6 minutes. Drain and rinse under cold water until cool. Peel the egg and cut in half.

Beat the dressing ingredients together with the seasoning in a mixing bowl. Mix in the pasta and beans, olives, flaked tuna, and cherry tomatoes. Divide the lettuce leaves between two lunch boxes or bowls and top with the Nicoise pasta and the hard-cooked egg halves. PC114621

MULLIN, Violet (Vi)

Born in Rossland, BC, Vi spent her early years living out the Old Hedley Road before the family moved to Kimberley,

enjoyed skating and skiing at North Star. She is predeceased

by her husband Ed, three brothers; Dave, Casey and Gwyn

and her two sisters; Jean and Mary. She is survived by her daughter Pat, brother in-law

Bob (Beryl) Mullin and numerous nieces and nephews. Nieces Lyndy Catlin and Margaret Johnson held a

special place in her heart. Vi moved to Allenby in 1939 where she worked in the General Store. She met Ed

and they were married in Princeton in 1943. Later in life the family enjoyed a trip around the world, followed

by winters in Hawaii and later, Mexico. Vi was a treasured, devoted wife and a wonderful, caring mother.
