Armed robbery at downtown bank

was robbed Monday by a man wielding a gun, who then fled the down-town bank onto Bridge Street with an undis-closed amount of cash.

The suspect remained at large as The Spotlight went to press at 11 p.m. Monday night.

RCMP received a 911 call from the bank shortly after 2:30 p.m.,

according to Constable Cam Shiell.

Shiell described the robbery as ”fairly quick…Obviously there is going to be some hold back evidence that we are not going to release to the public.”

An RCMP forensic unit, and a canine unit, were called to the scene to assist with the inves-tigation.

There were no inju-

ries in the robbery and Sheill declined to com-ment on how bank staff are coping with the inci-dent.

“All I can say is that…everyone is okay for the most part.”

The suspect is described as a white male, late 20s to early 30s, 5’10 to 6’ tall, sandy colored hair, medium athletic build, wearing a black Canucks touque, a

dark jacket, cargo pants and sunglasses.

Anyone with infor-mation regarding the suspect or the incident is urged to call Princeton RCMP at 250-295-6911, or CrimeStoppers.

Princeton will talk about it for years – the storm of 2014.

“It was as bad as I’ve ever seen it,” said Mayor Frank Armitage, describing the wet, heavy snow, pelting rain and freezing condi-tions last week that closed roads, destroyed trees and resulted in lengthy power outages in both Princeton and the region.

Armitage said he was first made aware of the severity of the storm when a resident phoned him at 4 a.m. Wednesday. He drove downtown and was distressed at the damage done to the trees. “It won’t be the same at all,” he said.

Later Armitage toured local truck stops and hotels, and even encountered an out-of-town school sports team that stayed overnight in Princeton after its bus went into a ditch. The area was also a temporary haven for truck drivers after Highway 3 between Princeton and Hope was closed Tuesday night. “The Cheveron garage was chock-a-block with trucks. You couldn’t have put another one in with a shoe horn.”

There were no serious injuries reported on the roads despite a busy week for Princeton’s Highway Rescue Department. Chief Doug Patemen said his crew was called out at least six times during the heavy weather to deal with “cars in the ditch and rollovers…there wasn’t much for us to do.” continued page eight

The first bad weather of the season – and the worst storm to hit the area in many years – caused both frustration and fear in Area H.

In addition to power outages and unplowed roads, residents of Tulameen and Coalmont faced an evacuation warning Thursday night as the Tulameen River threatened to breach its banks.

“There is a large ice jam on the Tulameen River approximately 4-5 kms from Tulameen,” said an advi-sory issued by the Tulameen Fire Department.

“The Tulameen Fire Department has gone door to door to advise resi-dents of the potential danger and the need to be ready to evacuate should the ice jam release.

Due to the steady rain in the area we have been monitoring the ice jam area and will notify as changes occur. We will be able to assess the situation more accurately in the morning.

Should the ice jam burst during the night we will be activating the fire hall siren, and begin evacuation proce-

dures in affected areas. We will update as changes occur

and provide emergency procedure plan for accommodations as need arises.

Please note this is just a precaution-ary measure to keep everyone safe and aware.”

By morning the river levels dropped, and the situation was being monitored.

Exiting Area H director Brad Hope said “obviously there were problems” with snow removal on rural roads in the past week

“It wasn’t because anyone let up, it was just slow, hard, slugging,” said Hope.

“I sure can’t remember anything like that with the snow so wet and heavy and everything so slippery it was difficult to plow because of the ice underneath.”

Hope said he has heard from a few concerned constituents. “I guess I’ve probably had four or five calls. I would say it’s complaints I would say it’s really concerns especially with the back up in the Tulameen River and yet the River Road wasn’t plowed.”

Rural residents faced evacuation warning

Princeton Light Up is set to take place this Sunday December 7 at 2 p.m., after the event was twice post-poned.

Light Up was planned for last Saturday, and had to be cancelled the day previous because of extreme cold. The Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the annual event, had hoped

to get the festivities going a week later on December 6, but there were too many scheduling conflicts.

The Light Up fun will include a visit from Santa, horse drawn carriage rides courtesy of Copper Mountain Mine, a chance to play pool noo-dle with the Posse, and a decorated Christmas tree competition.

VICTORIA – It has been 15 years since I wrote a commentary objecting to the B.C. gov-ernment pushing aside its own hard-won treaty process to reach an unprecedented land-and-cash settlement with the Nisga’a Nation for their ancient Nass River territory.

My objection, and that of many others, was the imposition of a parallel state with collectively owned land enshrined for all time. This was an ailing NDP government rushing to enable a property ownership system that has demon-strated little but failure and suffering around the world.

The Nisga’a are proving me wrong, and this was again demonstrated at a little-noticed cer-emony at the B.C. legislature last week.

The B.C. government had just passed amendments to allow a gas pipeline through Nisga’a Memorial Lava Bed Park, the first co-managed provincial park in B.C. history. Another bill enabled the Nisga’a Lisims government to impose industrial property tax on liquefied natural gas production. Legal documents were signed so the Nisga’a legislature can do the same this week.

In recent years, the Nisga’a disposed of concern about collec-tive land restrictions by adopting a private property system. And Supreme Court of Canada decisions have repeatedly answered protests about the establishment of a parallel state – that’s what it is, so get used to it.

The Nisga’a have moved to assemble four fee-simple tidewater sites for LNG terminals, joining the Haisla Nation at Kitimat in reaching aggressively for a modern economy through gas export. The Nisga’a have partnered with TransCanada Corp. on a 900-km pipeline to supply the $11-billion LNG project led by Petronas for the Prince Rupert port. And they don’t intend to stop there.

“We want to be part of the Canadian business establishment,” said former Nisga’a Nation president Joe Gosnell.

The signing ceremony was briefly disrupted by one of a small group of Vancouver-based Nisga’a who have been using modern

protest tactics against this decision. We weren’t consulted, it’s a desecration of victims of a volca-nic eruption, it’s a threat to eelgrass beds, and so forth, say well-rehearsed young men with video cameras running.

Nisga’a President Mitchell Stevens has patiently and repeatedly explained that Nisga’a legislature rules were relaxed to allow every hereditary chief to speak to elected leaders on this pivotal move. After that it received the required two-thirds majority support.

Gosnell, the revered chief negotiator who car-ried the treaty over the goal line in 2000, moved slowly with the help of an ornately carved cane to speak at a reception. He seemed genuinely

surprised that he has lived long enough to see the fruits of genera-tions of labour.

Gosnell recounted the 1887 paddling trip down the B.C. coast from the Nass Valley to Victoria to present the Nisga’a territo-rial claim, where the tribal leaders were turned away on the steps of the legislature by Premier William Smithe. It would take until 1910 for Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier to promise a settlement, and until 1949 for Nisga’a Chief Frank Calder to be elected to the B.C. legislature.

In 2000, when the treaty received royal assent in Ottawa, Gosnell took part in a ceremonial burning of the Indian Act and got to work on implementing self-government.

And on Nov. 27, 2014, B.C. Liberal, NDP and independent MLAs voted unanimously to open the way to an industrial future for the Nisga’a.

“That’s what being alive means to me today,” Gosnell said. “You’ve got to have big dreams. Maybe all those dreams won’t come true, but at least you have the ability to dream big. And boy, are we ever dreaming big.”

Nisga’a prove their critics wrong

To the editorThe Tulameen River this morning looks like time

has forwarded to Spring freshet. It is amazing the havoc weather can create and so suddenly. As I look out, the temperature has been plummeting and the downpour of rain all night abruptly turned to snow. At least it is a dry snow, not the heavy wet that con-tributed to the ice jam on the river. We will have to wait to see if we are out of the woods yet.

Come spring there should be less debris floating down the river to cause problems if what is going by our place is an indication.

The Tulameen Fire Department deserves com-mendation for their proactive action in going door to door alerting residents of the possible danger, and to be prepared in case an evacuation was needed.

If you own a 4x4, or live along Coalmont Road, evacuation would not have been a problem, as it is well maintained.

For those of us who do not fall into that group, the condition of the side roads was and still is this morning deplorable. Unnecessary delays and seri-ous problems may have occurred. Normally I would not consider this an issue as I realize we are low on the priority list for ploughing, and every one works around this.

When such a serious issue as this occurs, stan-dard procedure would be to alert all civil authorities of the danger. If Argo was proactive, the very first thing on their priority list should have been to dis-patch a plow truck to address the situation.

Thankfully we seem to have dodged a bullet this time and may we never need to be placed in this position again.

Tulameen residents “dodged a bullet”

To the editorI would like to commend the Tulameen Fire

Department and Jody Woodford (Fire Chief) for notifying everyone in Tulameen and Coalmont of a flood danger when a huge ice dam caused the river to rise. They went door-to-door to notify everyone of the danger and had a plan in place should the dam breach. They would set off the fire truck siren to notify people to evacuate. Luckily the river punched a small hole in the dam which was enough to release the pressure of the water gradually; however, the fire department’s quick actions to notify everyone gave us all a chance to move valuables to higher ground and load up our vehicles for a quick escape should one have been necessary. They are an awesome team and are greatly appreciated.,

It’s hard not to feel a little guilty about the extreme weather Princeton and area has experienced in the past few days.

Two weeks ago I was glued to the Weather Network, chuckling with evil delight while southwestern Ontario dug its way out of an unprecedented early and vicious snow. I posted obnoxious and boastful comments to Facebook describing balmy, sunny after-noons in the mountains.

The current 30-below temperatures, snow and ice accumulations, power outages and downed trees are evidence that the universe has a sense of humor. Sunday in my Ontario hometown it was 12 degrees.

I’m sorry if this is in any way my fault. It has been suggested I brought this weath-

er with me from Ontario. Quite contrarily, I believed I was leaving it behind.

That’s because every single person I have met since moving to BC’s interior in August

lied to me about winter.Snow? Princeton doesn’t get

a lot of snow.Well sure we get snow. But it’s not like that wet,

heavy snow you would be used to, living in Ontario.

We get light, dry, fluffy snow.

It always melts in a day or two.

I’d visions of icing sugar dusting the caps of Cascades.

I’m absolutely incensed by Keremeos, where people run around claim-ing to live in a desert climate. Perhaps the misunderstanding is my own fault, for failing to remember that Siberia is also a desert.

If I live to be one hundred (unlikely in these conditions) I will never forget the feeling of driving last Tuesday night from

Keremoes to our family’s new home outside Princeton. That 66-kilometer trip was the lon-gest two-and-a-half hours of my life and I say that recogniz-ing I’ve been in labour four times and have watched several Will Farrell movies.

A person can smoke a whole pack of cigarettes in two-and-a-half hours. Who knew?

Yes there are snowstorms in Ontario and the snow off the Great Lakes (ill-named really)

is always wet and slushy and it turns to ice and hangs around ‘til April. I’m used to driv-ing in weather like that.

Nothing in my 47 years, though, prepared me for driving in that weather in the pitch dark on isolated, hairpin mountain roads that wind along the side of deep precipices and

which are alarmingly devoid of guardrails. I would have pulled over except for most of the journey I had no idea if I was actually on the highway.

It must be pointed out, as well, that Ontario seems to have a higher plow-to-person ratio than what I’ve seen so far along Highway 3 East.

It was a miracle Tuesday night– and further evidence of the universe’s perverse nature – that the car didn’t get stuck until I was halfway along our 200-yard driveway.

It’s not a nice feeling, knowing that people in two provinces so far apart are laughing at you.

I am told spring starts earlier in BC’s interior than it does in Ontario. Some say in Princeton spring begins in late February.

I will believe it when I see it. And if I ever do, I will not be posting it

to Facebook.

Born and raised in a remote, sparsely populated area of rural Manitoba, my Mom had to share Christmas with 13 siblings. Large families were common at that time. With so many to provide for, my grandma and grandpa Funk had little money to buy gifts. On the morning of December 25th, each child awoke to a plate of hard candies, several varieties of nuts, home made cookies and possibly an orange. After chores and breakfast, if there wasn’t a raging blizzard, grandpa and the older boys hitched horses to the sleigh.

With heated rocks and heavy blankets to warm them, they’d set off to a small Mennonite church. Usually a shortage of space on the sleigh required the hardy older boys to run behind in the snow. Later the girls would help grand-mother prepare a simple, nourish-ing meal. If a stranger knocked on their door requesting food or a place to sleep, grandpa always said, “come in. My boys will put your horses in the barn and feed them.”

This simple upbringing and the example of sharing out of meagre resources instilled in the children a deep appreciation for Christmas. I’m convinced that for Mom, Christmas had a magical quality. I believe it approached on tiptoes, like an elf carrying a mystical gift. Even in her senior years her excitement soared as December drew near. She antici-pated the season with the exuber-ance and infectious delight of a dancing 5 year old.

After I had grown up, Mom’s enthusiasm for Christmas at times astonished me. One year, at the beginning of December she announced, “this month Dad and I are going to celebrate Christmas every day. I have casseroles in the freezer. I have baked dozens of white buns, squares, three kinds of pies and lots of sugar cookies. My freezer is full. There isn’t room for even one more cookie” To us it was a novel concept but we certainly didn’t doubt that

Mom and Dad would celebrate every day.

Each day that December she phoned someone and said, “come for lunch or dinner.” She reached out to single people living alone. If they went to the home of friends, she brought food.

Mom’s celebration reached its climax on Christmas Eve. My sis-ters and I, and our families joined Mom and Dad at a neighbourhood church. The lights were turned down and a skit depicted the story of the infant Jesus lying in a man-ger, attended by Mary and Joseph. There were shepherds with canes, the 3 Magi bearing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Angels sang “Silent Night.” The hour in church was a welcome reprieve from the intense commercial atmosphere dominating society even then.

In Mom and Dad’s home after the program, there was inevita-bly one discordant note. Mom always invited a retired couple whose company my sisters and I, and our families didn’t enjoy. These people had money, but they had learned only to take, not to give. Never did they bring a gift for Mom, even though she had devoted many hours to prepar-ing for this evening. Their lives

apparently had been mainly about the acquisition of wealth. They seemed not to understand the deep satisfaction that comes from genuine friendship. Fortunately Mom’s cheer and good will and Dad’s quiet positive demeanor lifted our spirits. The couple ate hurriedly and then, in spite of Mom’s urging to stay, rushed out with the haste of fire fighters off to douse a 7 alarm blaze.

I didn’t comprehend at that time why Mom wanted them at the table with her family, espe-cially on Christmas Eve. I wasn’t prepared to take responsibility for their unwillingness to give time to developing friendships. But Mom had grown up in a remote area where people were valued and a stranger was never turned away from the door of her family’s home.

Only later did I understand she took seriously the angels’ refrain about “good will toward men.” She chose to love people and to bless them with the warmth of friendship. It was her gift to them, and the example was a wonderful gift to her children and grandchildren. She showed us how to celebrate Christmas with joy.

The inaugural meeting of Princeton’s new town council Monday night was brief and jovial, as Mayor Frank Armitage and four councillors swore their oaths office and then min-gled with family, friends and members of the community.

Armitage welcomed back return-ing councillors Doug Pateman and Kim Maynard, and extended appre-ciative greetings to new representa-tives Jerome Tjekstra and Rosemary Doughty.

All members of council were acclaimed October 10th.

“I’m really pleased to have this new council,” said Armitage in an informal address. “I really look for-ward to a whole lot of fun over the next four years.”

Armitage outlined several issues he believes will be priorities in the coming term. He said town staff is continuing to work hard with pro-vincial leadership on the proposed

boundary expansion that will mean new industrial tax dollars from Copper Mountain Mine to fund new municipal projects.

“I’m very much in favor of health and wellness,” he said, while referenc-ing the potential health benefits of aquatic exercise and making reference to the long-debated swimming pool. “But that’s all I’m going to say about that tonight.”

The mayor pointed to improv-ing aging infrastructure as a priority. “We’ve got very old sewers, water system and street lighting,” he said, promising to working with council to “bring that forward, get it of an age.”

He also renewed his commitment to further enhancement and beautifica-tion of Princeton’s downtown.

“We’ve had some people come forward saying we spend too much money on our flower baskets,” said Armitage. “Short of somebody shoot-ing me we will again be having my favorite flowers in those baskets.”

Clark and her ministers are fend-ing off calls to increase spending on pressing social priorities as the financial picture brightens for the B.C. government.

With the bills tallied for the first half of the fiscal year, the province is forecasting a surplus of $444 million by next spring, about twice as much as was pro-jected in last February’s budget. Finance Minister Mike de Jong said the improvement was helped by a strengthening U.S. economy, despite commodity slumps that have produced declining lumber and coal revenues.

Both de Jong and Clark said their highest priority is to repay about $5 billion in debt accumu-lated during a string of deficits before the budget was balanced in 2013.

“Like any family that’s been through tough times, the first thing you need to do when you get back to finding a job and making an income again, is to pay off your credit cards,” Clark said in an interview. “We’re going to pay off these credit cards that got charged up after 2008 pretty heavily.”

NDP children and family critic Carole James said the govern-ment has achieved surpluses with the help of increases to medical premiums, ferry fares, BC Hydro rate increases and other charges, and it’s time to put some back to the people who need it. Her party has been pressing for removal of a clawback of child support pay-ments from social assistance and disability recipients, an estimated annual cost of $17 million.

“It’s not simply people who are the recipients of child main-tenance dollars, but in fact all

British Columbians see how unfair it is that that money is clawed back from children,” James said.

Another priority is to increase post-secondary education funds, which are looking at one of a series of budget cuts next year despite the government’s high-profile jobs plan, James said.

Jobs Minister Shirley Bond, meanwhile, turned away calls from retiring B.C. Federation of Labour president Jim Sinclair to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour.

After a series of increases brought the B.C. minimum up to $10.25 by 2012, Bond said the issue is being monitored, along with factors like youth unemploy-ment and inflation.

“You’re certainly not going to see us move to $15 an hour in the short term,” she said.

be said for Princeton works employees, who hit the streets Wednesday morning – while most of the town was without hydro and telephones – to begin the job of plowing and cleaning up the dozens of trees that were downed the previ-ous night.

“It’s not very often I’ve seen this big of a snow fall,” said Jack Thomas, Town of Princeton employee, who spent the day down-town cutting and remov-ing trees. “The last one I think I can remember was in the 1990s.”

While some homes in Area H were with-out power for two days, most of Princeton had electricity restored by Wednesday evening.

It made a long and frustrating day for local merchants, as well as people who braved the weather hoping to purchase supplies. Almost all businesses were closed, although employees at Ace Hardware were using flashlights to help cus-tomers find emergency supplies like salt and long matches, and then writing up orders and asking customers to return when the power

was restored to pay their bills. “I wish we had more shovels,” said owner Susan Robinson. “We sold out of them yesterday.”

Princeton’s Home Hardware owner Peter Rubingh spent Wednesday morning on the sidewalk, greet-ing hopeful customers and supplying items like tarps. He expressed frustration at not being able to open properly, and having to unload a delivery truck without power or lights.

Groceries, gas, or water were not to be had in Princeton Wednesday, but one café, Round the

Corner, was quietly serving a steady stream of customers.

“I have a gas grill. I can make coffee the old fashioned way,” said owner Stephanie Mintzler, who was also offering muffins and simple sandwiches.

Living up to the motto “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds,” the local Canada Post office was “sort of” open.

Workers there unlocked the doors so customers could access

their mailboxes, and also provided services that could be transacted without electronics, such as stamps for cash. Lead hand Dale Sunderland said she wasn’t aware of Canada Post’s policy in power outages. “It’s never happened before so I’m just doing what I can.”

Kevin Huey, Princeton’s director of infrastructure and public works, said local crews put in “quite a bit of overtime” in the days following the worst of the weather.

He said his depart-ment has received calls

from residents about street clean up. “Let’s say we’ve had some constructive criticism.” Most of the complaints regarded driveway entrances being filled in by town plows. “Most

people are very patient and understanding.”

Armitage had noth-ing but praise for Town of Princeton employees. “I was very pleased with the great job done by our town crew.”

Theater group raises the yardarm on entertainmentReview by Andrea DeMeer

Spotlight StaffThe Crimson Tine Players raised the yard-

arm this weekend for amateur theatre when they presented Yo Ho Ho, A Pirate Christmas to packed houses and appreciative crowds.

Rhianfa Riel directed the warm but crisp musical comedy that was punctuated by stra-tegic and genuine audience engagement and featured several stand out performances.

Six-year-old Delorian Osborne was the darling of the production in the role of pirate Jimmy Jack. In addition to being adorable, Osborne demonstrated a stage-composure worthy of a professional child actor. Her projection and discipline for remaining in character throughout the story were remark-able for so young a performer and Princeton should hope there are future roles for this up-and-coming star.

Holly Atkinson, in one of the major roles as Eve Christmas, delivered several solid musical performances during Saturday after-noon’s matinee at the Riverside theatre. Atkinson played a young girl who dreams of growing up to be a pirate, and is then trans-formed in a Peter Pan-like way to the North Pole where she is part of an elf family that helps save Christmas while showing a band of pirates the true meaning of the holidays.

Yo Ho Ho, A Pirate Christmas, written by James J. Mellon and Scott DeTurk, is rich with brisk and witty dialogue and that turned out to be the perfect compliment for Atkinson’s natural comedic timing.

Other young performers who ably filled out the Christmas family and the pirate crew were Abbegael and Maddisen Fulton, playing Ivy and Holly Christmas, Nathan Anderson as Petey the Parrot, Taylor Gibb as Junkma’am and Thyme Callihoo as Happy Christmas. Zoe Rytkonon as Ruby Red was a standout in the chorus with a voice that domi-nated several numbers with its tone, clarity and strength.

The actor who can best be described as the glue that held the cast together is 53-year-old Hawaii native Britt Fraser. With a boom-ing personality and an obvious love of fun, Fraser was expertly cast as the lead pirate Black-eyed Johnny. Commenting on Fraser’s performance Riel said “Britt could probably

be a professional, if he wanted to be.”Fraser was well balanced by Heather

Anderson, in the role of Grainne O’Malley, as she managed to strike the perfect note between pirate wench and mom. Peter Rytkonen as Murray Christmas, Dayton Wales as Santa Claus, Isabella Brodie as Mrs. Claus all con-tributed strong supporting performances. Rui Ferreira Da Silva as Winky was especially colorful.

Behind the scenes Yo Ho Ho, A Pirate’s Christmas relied upon a lot of exceptional local talent. Through make up, costuming, set design and stage-managing the Crimson Tine Players were positioned at least a level higher than many small community theatre groups that sometimes can be faulted for not taking enough risks.

The sets – including a moving pirate ship and a blanket of stars – were inventively painted by Princeton artist Grace Truesdell.

“All credit goes to Grace. All credit goes to Grace,” laughed Martin Riel, who was in charge of set construction and rigging.

Layne Robillard, a local dancer and per-former with Crimson Tine, deserves a clap for the show’s choreography which ranged from the simple but effective, to the more challenging like staging a full cast battle with elves brandishing candy canes and pirates wielding swords. Moving the characters ino the stands and up the aisles delighted the audience.

Brilliant and colorful costuming added much to the overall effect produced by the performers. Sue Alton, who has worked with textiles most of her life, created elf costumes straight from Who-Ville, and a wide vari-ety of pirate wear including one utilizing a Scottish kilt.

Dianne Rainer, stage manager, Danika Whelpton, lighting tech, Leanne Atkinson, music director Pam Kepner, hair stylist, Anne Williams, Seamstress, Victoria Gibb, back-stage and rigging, Morgan Whelpton, sound tech, Dawn Gardener, prompter, Guadalupe Gutierrez, make up and Della Osborne, direc-tor’s assistant were all instrumental in a suc-cessful run.

The Posse dropped the decision to the Grizzlies 2-1 and Eden Dubchak, who scored the lone goal for the home squad, was Star of the Game. The Posse penalty kill was is fine form, stopping the attackers on six opportunities. Stephen Heslop turned away 34 of 26 shots.

The Atom Posse is undefeated so far this season with eight wins and one tie, and handily beat South Okanagon on the weekend 8-0.

All donations will be given to area families via the town’s two assistance centres. All donations need to be

placed in Ziploc bags so they can be thrown on the ice.

Hilton said there is a request that no teddy bears be thrown.

On average, 29 people are killed in crashes involving impaired driving in the Southern Interior every year.

Last week the B.C. govern-ment, police and ICBC launched the December CounterAttack campaign to urge drivers to plan ahead for a safe ride home if their holiday festivi-ties involve alcohol.

While attitudes toward drinking and driving have changed consider-ably over the years, an average of 86 lives are still lost every year in B.C, according to police.

“Even after more than 35 years, CounterAttack remains a cornerstone of our provincial enforcement strate-gies that, together with changing pub-lic attitudes and our tough Immediate Roadside Prohibition program, have helped to reduce the alcohol-related death toll on B.C. roads to record lows,” said Suzanne Anton, Attorney General and Minister of Justice. “CounterAttack remains about pre-

serving and building on these vital public safety gains.”

“Getting home safely should be part of everyone’s holiday planning but the reality is that impaired driv-ing remains a leading cause of car crash fatalities in B.C.,” said Todd Stone, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “Do your part this Christmas season and look out for family and friends – take a stand and don’t let them get behind the wheel impaired.”

“Police officers across B.C. will be working hard to keep impaired drivers off our roads this December,” said Chief Neil Dubord, Chair of the B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police Traffic Safety Committee. “The hardest part of a police officer’s job is telling a family they’ve lost a loved one – a loss that could have been avoided. We can all help prevent these crashes by always planning a safe ride home.”

members of the Vermilion Forks Field Naturalist club with respect to our field trips.

Nine of us, accompanied by two dogs, gloried once again in the glow of great weather on Saturday, Nov. 22nd, as Jeannie Walker led us to the Reuben Jones shelter up China Ridge.

Princeton and area had received a light dusting of snow overnight, so our backdrop was beautifully bright and white.

We reached the shelter after two hours of hiking, quickly got a fire

started, and relaxed for half an hour around the warming blaze. The down-hill trek took us along different trails for another two hours, and Peter and John identified various tracks for us.

Our next field trip will be an eve-ning hike on Dec. 6th, a night of the full moon.

We’ll hope for clear skies, meet at Billy’s at 7 pm to carpool, and Peter Antonick will lead us along trails off Copper Mountain Road.

Please confirm attendance with Peter at 295-3640 and bring along a hot drink to help keep warm!

From a son, to his father, to his hometownRecently, as many people that live in Princeton have heard, my Dad, Ernie Alexandre passed on Oct 2, 2014. He has been ail-ing from some medical procedures, but we all thought we had more time with him. In fact, I was planning a surprise birthday visit in two weeks, on the 18th. From the time that I arrived in

Princeton on the Th ursday, the support from the people of Princeton was unbelievable. If every-body supported their friends, family and strangers like that, the world would be a happier place.I would like to give my Th anks and respect to the doctors, ambulance attendants, and hospital staff for making his last days in the hospital bearable, as he just did not want to be there. What he wanted was to be at home, to be where he was comfortable. Now, let me tell you about my Mom, she is the strongest lady I have ever known, throughout Dad’s hospital visits, she continued to look aft er the important things, regular house maintenance, and working. All the while, she was doing all she could to make Dad comfortable in the hospital. She was there everyday to see Dad, talk to him and carry on as if everything was perfect. Every day one of his friends or family members stopped by to see how he was doing, and bring some cheerful conversation and jovial fun. I wish I could have done more than call and talk to him. Th ere were days when we spoke that Dad seemed normal, like nothing was wrong, and then the days that it was evident that he was not feeling well, and the days that he was sleeping. Th rough all this, his friends were there.Th ere are people that go above and beyond the call of duty. Th ere are too many to mention but, I will mention a couple: Jim and Deb Byrne, they were the people that were always there with my Mom and Dad, and for my Mom and Dad; going on trips, just hanging out, and being there for my family when we were making any and all arrangements to make my Dad’s departure fl ow smoothly. Deb, deep down, there is a heart that knows no limits for the people she cares about. Jim, I don’t think that there is anything he would not do for his Uncle Ernie. Th ank you both and God bless you. Secondly; our cousin Pam, when Dad was in and out of the Penticton hospital, Pam was there every day to make sure he was eating, drinking and generally just being around so that he knew he was loved. I spoke to Pam via text and phone at least every second day to get the updates on how Dad was doing. She did not sugar coat anything, my heart hurting because I could not be there to do what she was doing. But in saying that, I am very glad she was there to be with my dad every day that he was at the Penticton hospital. My family and I would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts.Th ere are so many memories that I will hold with me and share with my family. It meant so much to personally hear the memories of others to really appreciate what kind of man he really was. He was a family man, fi rst and foremost. He was a sportsman, an auxiliary police offi cer, he was an Uncle to many, a friend, and most importantly he was a World Class Father. My family will be forever in his debt, for teaching us love, respect, honor, and loyalty. We will miss him dearly!Th e town of Princeton has been his home since birth. He has helped others build things, off ered a better way to build things, he was there when his friends asked him to be. Now I am fi nding that all his friends are embracing his memories and supporting my family at their time of need, bringing us hot meals and treats. For this I will be forever grateful.Oft en, music is related to experiences and memories in people’s lives, I now know that Roy Or-bison had it righty when he sang “In dreams I walk with you, In dreams I talk with you, I love you even more than I did before, Now what can I do”. I will always see you in my dreams Dad. I hope you knew how much I loved you and how much I will miss you, it feels like I never said it enough.To the town of Princeton, thank you very much for your support to me and my family. You all have a very special place in our hearts. I send you all my respect, admiration and pride. Princeton will be home to me forever. My heart reaches out to you all.
