From the PresidentThere is not a lot new to talk about since my last letter. Time is flying by. I have been so busy that I have only been skiing once. It is December 17 as I write this and the mountain has been open almost a month. Something is really wrong with this picture. But I will be heading up this weekend and Christmas weekend. Then heading off to McCall for almost a week.

My job has been keeping me extremely busy lately and then of course there is Christmas which I am not ready for. But I guess it will all come together. I am looking forward to the Christmas party tomorrow night which will be over by the time this comes out. There are close to 80 people signed up and knowing our group I am sure there will be more. Then we have a break up to BBSC Steelheads hockey night on January 14. Hope lots of people will join us.

Don’t forget about the Tahoe ski trip the end of January. Six more people need to sign up in order for this trip to happen. It’s a great deal and the Tahoe area just keeps getting more and more snow, so the conditions should be fantastic!

I hope everyone had a fantastic Christmas and New Year’s and you spent it with great friends and loved ones.

The prize for volunteering during 2010-2011 is $150 in Bogus Basin Bucks. Being a volunteer is fun and rewarding. You will meet new people and increase your interest in club events. I suggest you volunteer at a short-term event first to get your confidence up. Don’t worry about making mistakes. Everyone works together to make the event a success.

Each time a club member volunteers to work on an event, their name is submitted by that event chairperson to the annual lottery pool. The winner’s name will be drawn at the annual General Membership meeting in March 2011. In each issue you will see the event chairperson asking for volunteers. Call them or contact the Social Director, Natalie Angell, at [email protected]. Good luck!

I have two ski suits for sale. The first is a woman’s Marker one-piece ski suit in vibrant red. This suit is in beautiful condition. This suit is fully lined with a light thermoloft lining that makes it very warm on the coldest days. It has pockets galore on the outside, top and bottom, shins and on the sleeve. It is a size 10 or medium and is generous. It has two pockets on the inside chest. The hood hides in the collar, there are heavy duty scuff guards on the insides of the leg cuffs, heavy duty boot zippers and gripper elastic around bottom of legs. I have worn these one- piece Marker suits for twenty years and they are my favorites. This suit would retail for $400 if you could find one in a store. $85 The second suit I have for sale is a Helly Hansen very gently used women’s one-piece ski suit medium, or about a size 10, in a medium blue color with white trim. Front of suit zips, snaps and belt buckles at the waist. Has a light layer of thermoloft for warmth. Two front pockets, one left chest pocket on outside. One chest pocket on inside-zippered. Zippers underneath armpits for extra ventilation in warmer weather . Adjustable velcro wrists; hood folds into collar. This suit is beautiful and in perfect condition. It’s a proven fact that one piece suits are much warmer than pants and jackets. See for yourself. This is a great deal! It would retail for about $400 if you could find one. $75 You could be the owner of these suits tomorrow. Come to the house and try them on! Call Jane Gabbert 362-3627

Women’s One-Piece Ski Suits for Sale

If you attended the BBSC spring golf tournament you just may remember my enthusiasm for being the big winner of the raffle drawing. I shouted with glee when my ticket was drawn for the one night stay at the Grove Hotel and dinner voucher for Emilio’s. I just recently took advantage of my good fortune and can report that the experience was as grand as anticipated. Dining at Emilio’s is one of those experiences everyone deserves every so often. Staying at the Grove just was the icing on the cake. The whole weekend helped take the sting out of having one of those decade changing birthdays. Thank you to all who made this experience possible. The club puts together raffles and drawings at various events. Maybe you will be the next lucky winner.

And the Winner is…

Borah High School. Everyone really enjoyed the films. Next year, it’ll be bigger and better. They will make it a true festival.

Thank you all for coming out and supporting the club. This is the largest fundraising event we do as a club. Some of the funds go back into the club for activities and some funds are used for donations back to the mountain. Thanks to all the club volunteers who helped out as well.

The last party of 2010 was a total blast with good food, plenty to drink, and a band that got everyone up and dancing. JR and The Stingrays played music from the 50s and 60s and brought back a lot of memories for most of us.

Thanks to Barbara Brown, Fred Uranga, Herb Malady, Paul Markowitz and Clyde McNeil for their help setting up. Also, to Hazel Haynes for her help with the raffle baskets, Pam Averett and Natalie Angell at the greet table, Kim Hovren for biscotti for the raffle baskets and Bob Running for selling raffle tickets. Thanks to everyone I might have missed, who helped bartend and cleanup at the end of the evening. The facility was perfect for our party and the decorations were already there. We certainly had enough room and the dance floor was full all evening.

Thank you everyone for a good job with RSVP’ing. It helped make the night a success.

Happy New Year to everyone. The next event will be the Crab Crack in February, so plan to attend.

Another successful Warren Miller Film Festival is in the can as they say. The club did a great job gathering volunteers and helping every thing go well. There were 1670 tickets sold for the five performances. That was almost 100 more than last year. The high school racing program helped sell tickets and had some very quality entries in the short movie making contest, shown during the first session Friday night. The winners were: first place - Nick Sneegas, Columbia High School; second place - Grant Reeder, Eagle High School; and third place - Jeff Howe,

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CA: The Far West Ski Association (FWSA) conducted its winter Board of Directors and Board of Trustees meetings December 3 to 5, 2010 at Harveys Lake Tahoe in Stateline, Nevada. The Far West Ski Association, founded in 1930, is a volunteer non-profit organization representing 180 affiliated ski clubs located throughout eleven regional councils in the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. The Association conducts active programs in public affairs, skier safety, ski heritage, athletics, racing, communications, travel, council development, ski industry, and community outreach.

The association, after analyzing many bids, has chosen the Grand Sierra Resort as the destination for its 81st Annual Convention June 6 to 9, 2013.

FWSA with assistance from the Far West Ski Foundation, a 501(c) 3 non-profit foundation, has donated $12,000 to fifteen deserving USSA junior ski racers. The FWSA Athletic Scholarship program continues to grow with sponsorship from Whitefish Mountain Resort, Grouse Mountain Lodge, Canadian Mountain Holidays, Far West Racing Association; and partnerships with Skiyente Ski Club, Mountain High Snowsports Club, Los Angeles Council of Ski Clubs, and San Diego Council of Ski Clubs.

The Far West Ski Association is appreciative of the many sponsors who were a big part of the success of the FWSA winter meeting. Sponsors included: Heavenly Lake Tahoe, Harveys Lake Tahoe, South Tahoe Express, and Aston Lakeland Village Resort.

The 79th Annual Far West Ski Association Convention is scheduled for June 9-12, 2011 at the Pacific Palms Resort in Industry Hills, California, hosted by the Los Angeles Council of Ski Clubs. For additional information regarding the Far West Ski Association, please visit www.fwsa.org.

a Set BackOn December 2, we received word from Jim Carney that Ed Cardoza was back in the hospital. This time it’s St. Luke’s - Boise. Ed is diagnosed as having Guillain-Barre Syndrome. This is a serious disorder of the nervous system that can occur either spontaneously, often in healthy individuals, or after certain infections. It typically causes increasing weakness in the legs and arms that can be severe and may require hospitalization.

Ed is now at the Elks Rehabilitation Hospital, room 219. His cell number is 890-5319. You can visit him or send him cards and letters. The hospital address is 600 N. Robbins Road, Boise, ID 83702. For over three months we have followed Ed’s recovery from Diphtheria and the resulting complications. Ed was released from the hospital once before and had to be readmitted for falling blood pressure. Ed’s good friend, Fred Bernier, has visited Ed and says Ed is weak and tires quickly.

RecoveryTim Flood, as you will recall, in July 2010, suffered kidney failure and was treated at the local VA hospital. Tim had follow up rehabilitation and was released to his daughter around August 23. Recent emails from Tim state that he drove to Boise on November 15. Over the course of about three days he saw the VA medical staff, physical therapists, urologist, cardiologist. He is fully recovered. While Tim was here, he and Jane Gabbert celebrated his recovery with good wine and food. Tim is looking forward to coming down for some spring skiing and his annual fishing trip to Mountain View Reservoir on the Indian reservation. His current address is 1515 W. Yeisley Road, Othello, WA 99344. His e-mail address is [email protected].

The DC program is named after Dotty Clark, daughter of the late Senator D. Worth Clark. She attended Boise High School, was a successful junior race at Bogus Basin, helped to organize the “Davos Dusters,” and loved to ski in the giant slalom. Dotty was attending Stanford University when she was killed December 2, 1957 in an auto accident while returning to Boise from Sun Valley.

Did you know that BBSC supports this program? At the March 2010 Board of Directors meeting, we voted to support the program with $2000. Barbara Spingla, a DC advisor, sits on our board.

The Boise School District sponsored the program from 1962-2005 until liability issues with club sports forced it to discontinue sponsorship. Not wanting to drop the program, Bogus Basin picked up sponsorship in 2006.

Bogus Basin Resort has provided support to the Bogus Basin’s School Race Program (in various formats) and the Dotty Clark Championship races for about 51 years. That includes race courses, advertisement, participation in fundraising, the on-mountain insurance and the coaches resort passes. Ray Wilmot is the School Race Coordinator for the junior high and high school race program at Bogus. He has been involved with the race program for nearly 40 years. What started as a friendly competition in 1960 between Boise and Borah High Schools with 37 racers grew to include 30 high schools, 32 junior high schools, and over 1600 participants by 1980. Now the Bogus Basin race program includes 66 schools, 1,800 students and 125 advisors. You’ll find them on the mountain on Thursdays and Saturdays. The program culminates with the Dotty Clark Championships, now in it’s 52nd year.

Entrance to the Dotty Clark is predicated on attendance at three other races, not winning times. Race days near Simplot Lodge find crowds of parents who do not ski thronging the slopes to see their children compete.

The VertiGals is an informal group of women who get together to enjoy skiing/boarding with each other at Bogus Basin Ski Area. There are no membership or other fees and no profits are generated by its activities. All interested women skiers/boarders are welcome to participate.

The VertiGals do have certain women who help organize the VertiGals activities and who “lead” the various skiing/boarding groups on the mountain. For more information, you can pick up the registration/release and hold harmless agreement at the Bogus Basin office at 2600 Bogus Basin Road. Additional information is listed on that form.

f When arriving in the parking area slow down to 5 mph and expect the unexpected. People can appear just about anywhere and they are usually on slick surfaces. Watch for the parking lot attendants and park where you are directed.

f When returning to the valley, allow the proper distance between you and the car ahead. Remember, if it starts to slide, don’t apply your brakes hard or you’ll end up with them. Slow down before you get into the corners. Take your time, life will be there even if you are 10 minutes late.

Thank you for your patience and observations of the conditions of the road. We want you to come back and visit Bogus Basin again.

As we get into the heart of the winter season it is imperative for all who drive the Bogus Basin Road take precautions and have patience. I’d like to outline the major points that cause accidents.

f Slow down when conditions warrant, the speed limit is 35 mph when the conditions are perfect. 20-25 mph should be the observed winter speed limits.

f Pull out into the turnouts when you feel others want to travel faster than you. It is not worth your frustration for those who won’t drive safely. Just let ‘em go. There is no passing in the 16 miles.

f When go come upon a snow plow, just follow it, staying back at least 30 feet until it pulls out into a turnout. When you meet a snowplow coming in the opposite direction, slow down and get

As you plan your trip to the slopes, consider how to dress for comfort regardless of the weather. layering is essential for downhill skiing, cross country skiing, snowboarding or any outdoor winter activity. Layering means wearing several independent pieces of clothing to trap warm air between the layers and topping it with a layer that will repel wind and weather. Each layering component can be fine-tuned for comfort and weather conditions. Layering is easy to do successfully if you remember a few simple ground rules.

Start with the Base layer, the foundation piece that sits against the skin. This layer should be made of a synthetic fiber, wool or silk-never cotton! An effective base layer will wick moisture away from the skin, and will dry quickly keeping you dry and comfortable. Base layers are offered in many different weights, depending on the activity or temperature.

The second layer is the insulation layer, the warming component of your layering system. Fleece is a good insulator because it is quick drying and can transport moisture away from your body. Wool is also an excellent insulator and retains its insulating capabilities even when wet. Synthetic and down fill mid-layers are efficient insulators because of their warmth to weight

ratio and are very comfortable to wear. Remember that down must be kept dry to provide insulating properties. The final piece is the outer layer or protective shell. This very important layer protects you from rain, snow, wind or anything else Mother Nature may throw your way. Even a light shell may work well but it needs to be roomy enough to accommodate your other layers, be comfortable, and still allow good range of motion. In most cases, you want your outer layer to be breathable, allowing the heat and resulting moisture vapor that you exert during exercise to escape. Many jackets incorporate “pit zips” or core venting which allow mechanical venting if you overheat or the

temperature changes during the course of your outing. Many pants incorporate thigh venting for the same reason.

By putting together the ideal layering system, you will be warm, comfortable and have a great time throughout your day on the slopes.
