Sinai AcademyWhen Yaakov Klotz arrived in this country

some twenty years ago, chances are he would never have dreamed that he would end up living in Texas. Back then he was focused on developing his own Yiddishkeit. But over the years he thrived as a ben Torah, until he even-tually became a beloved talmid of Rav Aharon Schechter, Shlita, Rosh Yeshivas Chaim Berlin. It was the Rosh Yeshiva who felt that Yaakov was the perfect candidate to reach out to the Dallas community.

Yaakov, his wife Shulamit, and their family, have been living in Dallas since 2006 and they truly feel that they are making a difference. “Our organization is called Shema,” he ex-plains. “And we work with the Russian Jews who have settled in this area.” Through his untiring efforts, Yaakov has been successful in

introducing this community to their Jewish heritage. Recently, he was instrumental in starting a new Russian speaking minyan in a local school.

Yaakov credits his own spiritual growth to his Rebbeim at Sinai. “If not for them,” he says, “who knows where I would be today?” He calls Sinai Academy “the most successful outreach organization in America for Russian Jews,” and cites Rabbi Aryeh Katzin in particular for his personality, his dedication, and his ability

to “marshal good people around him.” How long will Yaakov remain in Dallas? “As long as the Rosh

Yeshiva wants me here,” he says. Meanwhile, he is thrilled to be a key player in the Torah revolution that is taking place in that community.

Born in Moldova, Yisroel came to America when he was twelve years old. Fortunately, his parents decided to send him to Sinai Academy. Yisroel’s sincerity and hasmadah was recognized early on, and his Rebbe, Rabbi Ephraim Vashovsky, sent him to continue his learning at Yeshivas Ner Yisroel in Baltimore.

Yisroel later became a talmid at Yeshivas Chaim Berlin in Brooklyn, where he’s been learning ever since. Today, he and his wife Sofia are raising their lovely family in Brooklyn.

About six years ago, Yisroel decided to return to Sinai, this time as a Rebbe. “I teach Yiddishkeit, Jewish history, and Hashkafa,” he says. “It’s going great.” His students relate to him because of his similar back-ground. Currently Yisroel serves as Principal of Secular Studies at Sinai

Academy. Today, most of the students are American born. In the old days, many of them were straight off the boat.

According to Yisroel, therein lies the greatness of Sinai Academy. “The Yeshiva adapted itself,” he explains, “in order to accommodate the changing needs of its student body.” He credits the hanhalla and the Rebbeim for recognizing the shifting needs of their students. “They are sincere, dedicated, and talented,” he

says. “That’s what makes them chinuch professionals.”Does Yisroel enjoy being part of the Sinai staff? “I love it,” he says.

“It is an honor and a privilege for me to do anything and everything I can to improve the lives of these students. I cherish the bonds created with each student”

Having emigrated from Leningrad in 1990, Shlomo enrolled at Sinai when he was in the tenth grade. It was there that he was ex-posed to Yiddishkeit for the very first time. The spark ignited in Shlomo’s neshama at Sinai and his Rebbeim recognized his potential to be-come a ben Torah. Shlomo’s family eventually moved to Madison, Wisconsin, and then to St. Louis. Yet through it all, he maintained a strong and vibrant kesher with Rav Aryeh Katzin, the Yeshiva‘s Menahel, who called Shlomo “a pre-cious neshama.”

Today, Shlomo is married with a beautiful family and learns at the Kollel of Beth Medrash Govoha in Lakewood. But Shlomo isn’t content to rest on his laurels. He feels strongly that

he must ’give back’ to the Russian Jewish community. So four years ago he opened up an evening Kollel for Russian speak-ing balabatim at Rabbi Landau’s shul in Flatbush. He embarked on this venture to-gether with Rabbi Mordechai Neustadt of Shoroshim. Over twenty balabatim attend the kollel every night of the week, and the kol Torah permeates throughout the Beis Medrash. It truly is a sight to behold.

Although he has left Sinai years ago, Shlomo still maintains a close kesher with Rabbi Katzin and feels tremendous hako-

ras hatov to the Yeshiva. “Sinai planted the seeds for my Yiddishkeit,” he says, “and hasn’t let go since.”
