The vision was to be a blessing tothe local community, the city, the nation of South Africa and

the nations of the world.

OUR STORYThe King’s College and Preparatory School has a rich history, having opened our doors in January 1986 with an enrolment of 54 learners and 6 teachers. The school was started by New Covenant Church Bryanston and, rather than having a focus on the numbers or the bottomline, the focus has been one of the heart call of God to impact individuals and communities. From the very beginning, even when the school was still relatively small in size, we carried the same big vision of the church for positive change in our community.

In order to truly be an agent of change and fulfill our vision we provide learners with an environment in which they are able to learn and grow academically. Key, though, is that they grow spiritually, strengthen their characters, and develop their skills and talents to their fullest potential as well. Our goal is not only to educate learners, but to raise up and release Godly leaders!

LEARNERS

6TEACHERS

We are an independent Christian school, and while we welcome children and families of different faiths to our school, as a faith-based organisation we ensure that all our learners be actively exposed to the grace and love of Jesus Christ through various activities which include assemblies, church services, and religious instruction. No child may therefore be excused from events or parts of the curriculum that have Jesus as the focus.

These facilities underpin our vision for a vibrant community that attracts our learners and their families to enjoy activities outside of the usual school day.

CAMPUS GROWTH

Over the past 40 years we have seen the campus grow as the church has led the school. We have sought to create a space that serves our surrounding community. It is rare to find such a peaceful and tranquil surrounding in the heart of a bustling city as that which people experience on our campus.

Our campus is a benefit to the community, from locals who wish to kick-start their day with a great coffee at our vibey café, to those who wish to walk their dogs in the late afternoon, and everything in-between.

A number of local soccer clubs use our facilities, including Euro Soccer Schools and SuperSport United. In partnership with Shaun Bartlett, the South African football icon, we also founded the Bryanston Warriors Football Club in 2011 and serves hundreds of players from under 6s to a seniors team.

Our 5-a-side Highway Football Park (HFP) and the Young Blood Forever (YBF) Skate Plaza, which is rated as one of the top skate parks in Gauteng, were built to create a safe environment for a healthy, local influence in different sports cultures.

The fields and other facilities have been created with the intention of

providing a safe, family-orientated, hub for the community to enjoy.

PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES

Together with New Covenant Church Bryanston (NCCB), we expose our learners to multiple opportunities to explore and grow in areas not usually associated with a conventional school. NCCB has, as a part of its 100 Year Vision, the development of a Media & Production Collective, a Music & Arts Academy, a resident Art Gallery, a Fashion School, an Urban Sports Complex, a Business Incubator and much more. These expressions are already starting to evidence themselves as opportunities for our learners. For example :

In the fast-paced and ever changing world we live in, we provide our learners with sound academic foundations and encourage their individual journey as a lifelong learner. We believe in developing in each learner a self-belief and self-confidence to explore different fields, and provide them with the opportunities to do so.

In addition to our school choirs and music department, NCCB’s youth ministries provide an opportunity for our learners to develop their skills in the music and arts arenas, which include sound engineering, studio production and live band.

NCCB’s Junior Youth hosts an annual event called Stepping Up’s Got Talent which caters for 11 – 13 year olds and is fast becoming the premier youth talent event in Gauteng with talent scouts and audiences of over 700 people coming out to attend.

In 2019 NCCB’s YBF Youth Band produced its first album, Future Awaits, which is available on iTunes and other platforms, and includes learners from our school in the band.

Our learners have an opportunity to participate in The Good Story 48 Hour Film Challenge which NCCB hosts. Leading professionals from the film and production industry are involved in upskilling those interested in acting in, directing, and producing films which tell a good story and carry a narrative that will inspire and uplift. MEDIA & PRODUCTION

MUSIC & ARTS

We are in the process of partnering with professional actors and dancers in the NCCB community who appear in mainstream South African TV series to establish an acting and dancing academy on the premises … watch this space!

URBAN SPORTS

BUSINESS INCUBATOR

The credibility that the campus has built in the urban sports community has resulted in a conversation for the establishment of a School Skate League, making use of the YBF Skate Plaza on the property.

We are also exploring an adventure park which will cater for disciplines such as parkour and BMXing.

Our learners don’t have to wait until they leave school to start dreaming about andengaging in entrepreneurial ventures.

NCCB hosts annual Business Incubator events in which our learners can participate. This initiative allows budding entrepreneurs an opportunity to hone their business skills by providing practical tools and frameworks for them to develop a business idea into a well-thought-out business plan. Learners then have an opportunity to pitch their business ideas to a panel of established business leaders who provide insight and mentoring to the young entrepreneurs.

LEARNTHROUGH ENGAGEMENT

Our approach to learning begins with the manner in which we engage the teachers who we employ.

Not only do we employ teachers who are passionate about seeing our learners grow holistically, but we demonstrate commitment to their continued personal learning and growth.

Our staff all participate in a formal staff development journey which takes into account the components necessary to be a high-performing educator. This approach sees our staff developed not only in the ‘technical’ area of facilitating a child’s learning, but also in the areas of ‘Leadership’, ‘Management’ and effective ‘Communication’.

Our approach to learning, in and out of the classroom environment, reflects an understanding that each learner has a preferred learning style and that by incorporating different learning methods into the curriculum we are able to provide a more holistic learning experience.

We are registered with the Independent Examiners Board (IEB) for assessment purposes. The IEB is a South African independent assessment agency that is approved by UMALUSI (the Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training) and learners write the IEB National Senior Certificate Exam in Grade 12. To monitor our high academic standards we also participate in the ACER (Australian Council for Education Research) international testing, as well as the IEB’s Core Skills Testing and various International Benchmarking Tests – IBT’s.

As a school we strive for academic excellence, and our academic record under the IEB is exemplary with a 100% pass rate year after year. Our learners also regularly score at and above the IEB averages and we regularly receive notices from universities which acknowledge the achievements of some of our past pupils. It is not, however, only about the “top achievers” at this school. We believe in developing the potential of each individual. To this extent our smaller classes and personal approach allow each learner to challenge themselves and grow in their self-esteem and confidence.

The King’s Leadership Academy (KLA) was launched in 2017 with the purpose of continuing to develop the culture of leadership within the school, while also equipping our learners as young leaders with the practical tools and skills necessary to be effective in the work place.

More recently the KLA has been extended to provide a platform to empower learners and teachers from feeder schools by partnering with like-minded individuals who desire to make a difference in the lives of the next generation of young leaders in our nation.

The KLA takes students from Grade 7 to Grade 12 on a personal journey of developing life and leadership skills by incorporating the “Whole Me” framework into our curriculum.

The Whole Me Framework

HANDS HEALTH

WHOLEME

Looks at the importance of having a life strategy to achieving a preferred future and how this impacts one’s personal goals, decisions and thinking patterns to be the “best me”.

Looks to develop an understanding of what a persons passions are and how to link personal meaning to every stage of one’s life.

Looks at the developing practical skills to affect change in one’s own life and to contribute to the well-being of the greater community.

Looks at developing an understanding of how to manage a person’s spiritual health, physical health, emotional health, and mental health.

“Whole Me” is a leadership framework that intentionally aims to develop productive and well–centered young people, who are able to lead themselves and others by focusing on the 4 Hs namely;

At the King’s College and Preparatory School we are intentionally a Christ-centred culture where each individual can move from a place of feeling a sense of value and belonging to becoming who they are created to be, and through which they realise their God-given gifts and talents along the way. To help us create this environment there are five essentials on which we place a high value:

OUR CULTURE

We believe that the greatest knowledge someone should posses is a knowledge that they are fearfully and wonderfully created in the image of God. A person’s value should stem from who they are, not what they do. Helping our learners discover the value that they carry as their primary identity is of first importance. All other knowledge is built upon this foundation.

Integrity of heart forms one of the cornerstones for the development of steadfast personal character. We place a high value on integrity and respect for others in all of our interactions, whether in word or deed. It is the golden thread which weaves through the moral fabric of our lives, our families and our communities.

All progress depends on the constant desire for and pursuit of new thought. We understand that we are preparing our learners for future jobs that do not yet exist and because of this we believe in encouraging curiosity and creativity in the manner in which we learn, use technology, and collaborate with those around us.

We desire to see meaningful growth in the life of every individual we interact with. By creating a positive environment which engages individuals in a journey of lifelong learning they are empowered to discover new areas for personal growth, be it in the classroom, on the sports field, on the stage performing, or in a leadership discussion.

In line with our vision of being a blessing to the local community, the city, the nation of South Africa and the nations of the world, we place a high value on creating opportunities for individuals to make a difference by contributing to establishing hope, dignity and honour in the lives of all, in whatever way, small or large.

Technology has driven every area of progress since the First Industrial Revolution over 300years ago, and given that we have entered the much-hyped Fourth Industrial Revolution these days it is clear that a relevant school must embrace ever-evolving technology to realisticallyclaim to prepare learners for their lives.

USE OF TECHNOLOGY

In line with our culture of preparing our learners for the future, King’s was one of the first Johannesburg schools to blanket our campus with WIFI. What was once a nervousness from parents is now the everyday as learners from Grade 4 to 12 take tablets and WIFI for granted.

Information is no longer book-bound and learners are guided into just how to find the knowledge that was previously an adult’s to dispense. Learners need to know how to weigh up screeds of knowledge, not what knowledge to weigh up.

The 2018 purchase of 4 robots for coding training has also become matter-of-fact, yet we should not lose sight of the fact that learners are constantly on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) – Scratch programming site. MIT has been rated as the No 1 premier university in the world for 2018/2019, and our learners’ technology skills are being developed through them! Watch this space – 3D printing and other tech will revolutionize what learners are able to do and accomplish at 54 Hornbill Road.
