Spartanburg, South CarolinaSpartanburg, South Carolina is located near the foothills of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. The City of approximately 40,000, which is part of a county of approximately 275,000, is conveniently situated at the junction of I-26 and I-85. The area of the City covers approximately 20 square miles. Although the City is restricted in its ability to expand, it draws on a population of nearly 750,000 within a 30-mile radius. The City of Spartanburg had a population of 39,018 as of July 1, 2018.
Spartanburg is also home to the world headquarters and research facility for Milliken & Company, a textile and chemical manufacturer. Strong hospitality tax results indicate that the City’s role as a commercial and entertainment hub for the region continues to be a source of strength. Likewise we see increases in commercial development activity in the downtown and along significant commercial corridors, which bodes well for tax base growth in future years. Downtown residential and employment numbers continue to move in a positive direction. Those factors combined with several larger employment announcements within the region support the belief that demand for residential properties in city neighborhoods is also poised for growth. Numerous other smaller businesses such as RJ Rockers Brewing Company have also moved downtown as a result of this community-wide effort.
Spartanburg County’s healthcare is mainly provided by the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System. Spartanburg Regional is a public, not-for-profit, integrated health care delivery system based in the Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, a 540-bed teaching and research hospital. SRHS provides healthcare services to a five-county area in North and South Carolina, serving an Upstate medical population of more than 300,000 people. In 1925, Dr. Hugh Ratchford Black opened a 35-bed facility named in honor of his wife, Mary Black. The current Skylyn Drive facility opened in 1968, and today, the campus features a 353,690-square-foot modern medical facility. The medical staff consists of more than 350 physicians representing all specialties. Mary Black Physician Group has over 100 employed physicians in more than 30 locations.
The city is served by the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport and the Spartanburg Downtown Memorial Airport. The Spartanburg Area Regional Transit Agency serves the region. Amtrak Crescent train provides transportation from the city to numerous large metropolitan areas. The city is home to the University of South Carolina Upstate, Converse College, Spartanburg Methodist College, Spartanburg Community College and Wofford College.
The city’s nearby attractions are The Chapman Cultural Center features history, dance, art, music, theatre and science. The Showroom contains a gallery, stage and concert venue. The Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium offers well known performers. Lawson’s Fort Creek features waterfalls and woodlands. The Cottonwood Trail offers a wide variety of wildlife. Hatcher Garden Woodland Preserve showcases a noteworthy flower garden and a large variety of birds and other types of wildlife and Walnut Grove Plantation.
