Following these instructions will help youto operate the sensor more easily and efficiently, allowing you to achieve reliable measuring results.

1 Introduction

These instructions provide you with information on using, installing, operating, and maintaining thesensor. The sensor described here is usually operated using a control device / measuring transducer.For this reason, it is important to familiarize yourself with the proper operation of the control device /measuring transducer in order to ensure successful operation of the sensor.

In particular, before using the device for new applications in the area of research and development,we recommend first contacting us to discuss the application in question.

1.1 Using this manual

Pay particular attention to all special information and warnings.Information of this type is set apart from the rest of the text and labeled withthe appropriate symbols (see example on left). This information provides youwith useful tips and helps you to avoid improper use of the device.

1.2 Using the sensor

Procedures such as proper transportation, storage, installation, operation and maintenance of theproduct are vital for ensuring correct and safe operation.

Using the sensor in a way that is not described in these instructions can pose serious risks for theuser. In addition, improper use of the equipment renders the device warranty null and void.

1.3 Warranty information

The contents of this instruction manual do not constitute part of a past or existing agreement, promise,or legal relationship nor are they intended to modify these. 2 Description

The sensor is composed of two conductive electrodes. The electrodes are insulated from one anotherand arranged in a specific geometric pattern. The electrodes determine the cell constant. An alternatingcurrent is applied to the electrodes. The flow of the current is a measurement of the conductivity of thesolution.

Since the measuring results are affected by the temperature of the solution, the measurement must bemade for a particular reference temperature (generally 25 °C/77° F) so that the results can becompared. A Pt100 temperature probe is integrated into the sensor.

3 Installation

3.1 Installing the sensor

3.1.1 Installation in a pipeWhen installing the sensor in a pipe, it is important to make sure that the inner electrode is completelyimmersed in the medium conducted through the pipe.

The illustration on the left shows various examplesof how the sensor can be installed in a pipe. Thearrows indicate the direction in which the mediumin the pipe is flowing. The letters in the illustrationsignify the following:

A) Excellent positioning of the sensor,optimum contact with the flowing medium, andoptimum rate of medium replenishment on theelectrode surface.B) Possible positioning of the sensor,sufficient contact with the flowing medium, andsufficient rate of medium replenishment on theelectrode surface.C) Poor positioning of the sensor. Theelectrodes have only partial contact with the flowingmedium and the transmitted conductivity value isinsufficient.

3.1.2 Installation in a continuous-flow vesselIt is possible to install the sensor in a continuous-flow vessel (7MA2000-8PX1). For this type ofinstallation, it is important to ensure a minimum flow rate of 20 l/h (5 ¼ USGal/h) (the optimum flowrate is 60 l/h, 15 ¾ USGal/h) in order to avoid the creation of bubbles on the surface of the probe.

The illustration shows various examples of how the sensor can be installed in a continuous-flowvessel. The letters in the illustration signify the following:

B) Possible positioning of the sensor, sufficient contact with the flowing medium, and sufficientrate of medium replenishment on the electrode surface.

C) Poor positioning of the sensor. The electrodes have only partial contact with the flowingmedium and the transmitted conductivity value is insufficient.

3.2 Connecting the cable

When connecting the cable to the plug, it is important to make sure that thereis no moisture in the plug and that no moisture can form in the plug.

4 Setup and operation

The sensor is always operated using a SIPAN 32 or SIPAN 34 measuringtransducer. For this reason, it is important to follow the operating instructionsprovided for these devices to ensure proper functioning of the sensor.

4.1 Checking / specifying the cell constantThe cell constant is a specific sensor value required for converting the measured resistance value intoa conductivity value. To check the cell constant, you must use the value specified on the sensor. Thisvalue was calculated with an accuracy deviation of less than 2% according to ASTM N 1125 andISO 7888 standards. The cell constant is specified in the measuring transducer menu.

4.2 Calibrating for the first time

4.2.1 Temperature compensationFor these sensors, the integrated temperature sensor is fitted as a two-wire connection. In thisarrangement, the measured value is affected by the resistance of the sensor cable. To compensatefor the cable resistance, the temperature must be calibrated before startup. To do this, proceed asfollows:

1. Immerse the sensor for approx. ten minutes in a solution (e.g. distilled water) heated to roomtemperature.

2. Measure the temperature of the solution using a second calibrated thermometer havinga resolution of 0.1 °C/0.18 °F or better.

3. Set the SIPAN measuring transducer to operating mode 'Calibrate' (CAL).4. Enter the temperature shown on the thermometer as the calibration value on the SIPAN

measuring transducer.

For detailed information on temperature compensation, please refer to the instruction manual of theSIPAN measuring transducer you are using.

4.2.2 ConductivityTo calibrate the conductivity, please read the relevant sections of the measuring transducer instructionmanuals.

4.3 Explosion ProtectionThe sensor is defined as standard electrical equipment as per EN 50020, Section 5.4. The only sourceof heat is the integrated Pt100 temperature probe, which is defined as a small component as perEN 50020, Table 3. As a result, the sensor can be operated under a maximum operating temperatureof 125 °C/257 °F in temperature class T4.

5 Servicing and maintenance

The conductivity sensors are extremely reliable and only require a minimum amount of calibration.

5.1 Measuring errorsIf you detect any measuring errors, we recommend first checking the following:

A) Cable connectionsB) Measuring transducer settingsC) Probe (Pt100 and electrodes). The following illustration shows the correct position of the

connections:

Pt100: Measure the resistance of the Pt100 at the point of connection and compare the levelof resistance with the (correct) values shown in the following table:

Electrodes: Check the insulation between the two electrodes (if the sensor is dry andexposed to air: resistance R = ∞).

5.2 CleaningInsulating deposits (e.g. calcium deposits or oil film) formed on the electrodes during operation canaffect the measuring results. If this occurs, you must clean the sensor. In most cases, you can cleanthe sensor using hot water and an acidic cleaning agent. Oil films can usually be removed using ethylalcohol or propyl alcohol. Residue from solutions containing bacteria or algae should be removedusing a cleaning agent containing chlorine. Deposits of metallic hydroxide must be treated with 20%nitric acid (in a ten-minute immersion bath).

After cleaning the sensor, we recommend checking the calibration.
