Events & News

May, the Month of Mary Hail, holy Mother, thou

who didst bring forth the King who rules heaven and

earth forever and ever.

The Blessed Mother is very much a part of our salvation history. St. Augustine referred to her first as a disciple, and second a mother. Mary is the ultimate role model of discipleship, following Christ with unparalleled trust and devotion, which is why we honor and crown her statue at all the Masses next weekend on Mother’s Day. Let us meditate on her example and ask her help to follow Christ like she did, that we too may be fruitful. The Parish will be offering a three days of prayer for all Mothers starting May 10 - 12. We will pray for them at all the Masses and conclude with a special blessing on Mothers’ Day. Please take one of the Mothers’ Day envelopes found at all exits of the Church and include the name(s) of your loved ones so we can pray for them throughout the month of May. Please place your envelope in the collection basket or bring to the Parish Office.

Journey To Baptism Lamont Banks, Jr. celebrated the Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens at the 9:30 am Mass on April 22. After several weeks of thinking about this, and much encouragement from his girlfriend’s late grandfather, Matt Gabel, Lamont declared his desire to be baptized while the assembly offered its prayers and support. As our newest catechumen (those committed to baptism as Catholic Christians) he joins Sonny Grewal, Mariah Muñiz , Allison Chan and Stephen Van Vliet in preparation for Baptism. The door is always open! Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) Inquiry sessions are offered year-round for adults who are thinking about becoming Catholic, at 7:30pm Wednesdays upstairs in the Parish Center. Info on our website: www:sjbalameda.org/page/rcia or contact Anne Marie at 510-995-9409.

Grief Support Group is for anyone seeking support whether grieving the loss of a loved one or suffering from any kind of loss. We meet the second Thursday of each month from 6:30 to 8:30pm in the Damien room of the Parish Center. All are welcome! For information please call Pamela Prime 209-814-2586 or Bill Kueppers 510-522-2270 or Patricia Reis 608-698-5998.

Seminary.

Once, the renowned Swiss theologian Karl Barth was spending some time relaxing with a group of friends. In the course of the conversation, he was asked: “What is the most important insight that ever entered your mind?” The eminent theologian replied: “The simple truth that Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.” This simple truth lies at the heart of this Sunday’s scripture readings. St. John, in the second reading, says: God is love.

If God is love, love should characterize God’s human family. God’s love is the why and how of our love for one another. In the gospel, Jesus says, “love another as I have loved you.” We think we are all gurus of love. But to love as Jesus did is always challenging. We see one example of such challenging love in the first reading when Peter enters the house of Cornelius, a pagan. No Jew in Jesus’ time entered the home of a Gentile.“ Peter became the first to accept a non-Jew for baptism - a revolutionary step in the life of early church. Then Peter makes that wonderful statement: “Now I begin to see that God shows no partiality.” Peter had a long way to go to make his love inclusive. The prejudices of our time are no less strong: Christians against Muslims, immigrants against non-immigrants, Alamedians against non-Alamedians etc. The list goes on. Let us make the psalm Responsorial of this Sunday our own: The Lord has revealed to all nations his saving power. Let all nations and peoples praise you Lord.

Legion of Mary Annual ‘Shoes of Peace Walk’ (April 21, 2018) The Shoes of Peace Walk is Our Lady’s Spirit coming to life in a public honor to The Immaculate Heart of Mother Mary. Saturday was an awesome beautiful day to stay in touch with our Blessed Mother, and our Lord most high as we model godly attitudes, walking the streets in Alameda praying The Holy Rosary with praise and worship. The greatest gift a mother can give to her children is her love to nourish the soul and the undoer of knots in our lives. She is our sieve to filter secular culture and everything coming into the mind as we walk. Walking is a sacrifice but it opens our eyes to the vast riches of grace that our Blessed Mother and God have lavished upon us in Christ Jesus. From start to finish it was truly amazing and glorious that everyone made it to the end of the walk

especially Sister’s An and Katherine. The Holy Spirit dwells within us, empowering us to accomplish all things through Him. The climax of these spiritual blessings was felt as we sang songs. We cannot comprehend what awaits us. I hope for truly amazing answered prayers to come. God assures us of this hope according to His great Mercy and His power through Faith and Mother Mary’s love for us is infinitely great and splendid. We look forward to her miracles manifesting in our lives. They are paved in all the merits of the Divine Blessed Mary. Dr. Terecita Dean, Legion of Mary
