SKI TRACKS Newsletter of the Bitterroot Cross Country Ski Club Box 431 • Corvallis, Montana 59828 SEPTEMBER 2006 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello Ski Club Members, Let's start our first newsletter for the 2006-2007 season with an invite to our fall workday. We will convene at the Hut at 10 AM Saturday, the 16 th of September. We will move about three cords of firewood and do a little brush work -very little. There will be a potluck so bring a dish or two to share along with your plates, utensils and beverage. We will also have a short business meeting to introduce some changes to our bylaws that we need to make to qualify for 501(c)-3 status with the IRS. Mel has been working on this most of the summer and it's almost ready. Our friends and supporters at REI in Missoula (Bret Pence) asked the home office to include us in their invitation for grant requests. They have to invite you to make a grant request, which we did with our partners at Bitter Root RC&D. We asked for $4,000 to purchase a new Ski Doo Super Wide Track Skandic, just like the 2004 model we have now. Our two Alpines are 1994's and we can't get parts. Guess what!l! We received the check for $4,000 a few weeks ago. The REI folks at the home office said the grant requests (10) from the Missoula REI service area were the strongest in their entire National service area and they awarded four grants. We do pay an administrative fee to Bitter Root RC&D for all their great help but we are well on our way to a new grooming machine. Gordon has contacted all the other clubs in Montana and offered to sell them one of .he Alpines. We have also applied to the Rapp Family Foundation, with the Bitter Root RC&D, for a $3,000 grant to aid in the purchase of the new Skandic. The new Skandic retails for $8,400. It has been a busy summer for everyone and there has been a lot of work accomplished at the Hut. Gordon will detail all the work and people involved in the OctolYenrewsletter. We have had a few fires in the Chief Joe area, according to the Missoulian and verified by the folks in Wisdom. I plan to encourage the Forest Service folks in Wisdom again to seriously consider a fuel reduction project in the Chief Joe area. I don't think any of us wants to ski among the charred remains of trees or see the Hut put at risk. We have had outstanding results from our grant requests and we hope that it continues. We may have news of the Rapp Foundation grant by the workday. We will continue our monthly meetings at the First Presbyterian Church with our first meeting October 12 at 7 PM. Let's get those membership applications and dues coming in. Don't forget, my third 2-year term as president expires in December and I will not seek another term, so we need to start looking for a replacement. I hope to see you on the 16 th . /s/ Sonny While two dogs are fighting over a bone, a third dog runs away with it. Those people who do not find time for exercise will have to find time for illness.
