Stand Together and Stand UnitedGreetings! Let me start by thanking you sincerely for the support and for the trust you have exhibited in my abilities to serve as your President. I am delighted to direct my efforts toward not only the community and the members of this organization, but most importantly, toward our great profession of dentistry.

As many of us are probably aware, dentistry has been thrown into the limelight more often than not these days. Whether it is reports of dental radiographs causing tumors, insurance companies reducing fees or various foundations offering mid-level providers as a way to solve the nation’s “access” crisis, dentistry has found itself in the news regularly. Having been in practice now for nine years, I look back at graduating from dental school and being told this was the “age of dentistry” and that the future was incredibly bright. Just like you, I spent years in the clinic waxing, prepping, pouring, filling, trimming and polishing just so I could earn the right to practice dentistry in all its glory. I am overwhelmingly proud of our profession and want to preserve its integrity for generations to come. In order to do so, we must recognize that now is a vital time for us all to stand together and to stand

united. We need to engage our members and provide a sound and unified defense towards anything and everything that may come our way. That is not to say that it’s only a dark and twisted road that lies ahead. Quite the contrary! I hold a great sense of hope for not only the next year of my service but for the many years to come in our field of work. Dentistry has made unsurpassed progress in the past decades, advancing from a rather limited career path to one that encompasses a whole realm of healthcare considerations.

My hope as President of such a committed organization is that we each make the conscious effort to individually invest in the future of our profession. We all share responsibility for ensuring a prosperous future for dentistry and, with that, comes a commitment to providing the best care for not only our patients, but our community. I look forward to fostering a sense of giving, a sense of charity, among our members as we all strive to better ourselves by assisting those in need. We often stop even before we start giving to others, justifying our lack of action by claiming we don’t know how to help. Continued next page >>

I hope that at least in the next year, SKCDS can be that guiding light and can provide the direction that we, as dentists, need in order to offer ourselves in the service of our greater community. As dentists, we must begin to consider volunteer work as part of our new standard of care. SKCDS has already created avenues by which we, as an organization, can start donating our time and efforts to a greater good. With the establishment of the dental specialty clinic at Swedish Medical Center, we have certainly taken a step in the right direction. The following months give us the chance to expand this program in order to optimize its potential benefits. Further, it is our goal to continue partnership with the Northwest Kidney Centers in an effort to provide optimal oral health for patients awaiting transplant. Giving of ourselves through our carefully honed set of skills is our responsibility, and it is time that we regard it as such.

On the same note, I truly feel that active engagement of our members within SKCDS would do a world of good for the development of our organization. In the next year, I will be striving towards creating an administration that values transparency in an effort to establish a sense of trust and a sense of confidence amongst each and every member dentist. As I and the rest of the Executive Council focus on maintaining open and honest lines of communication among us all, I urge you to stand together and stand united. Let us increase our involvement. Let us transition from passive observers to active engagers in our roles as dentists. I further encourage you to reach out to me with any and all of your questions, your concerns, your fears and your

hopes regarding SKCDS. When you sense the need, shoot me an e-mail or pick up the phone and give me a call. I genuinely want to hear from you so that we may establish a reciprocal dialogue that will help us reach our goals as an organized society. My email is [email protected] and my cell is 206-265-0062.

As dental students and newly practicing dentists at one point, I believe we all shared in a sense of fiery optimism and spirited enthusiasm for the field of dentistry. We trusted that, with a dental degree, we could somehow make the world a better place. And yet at some point along the way, we lost confidence in our abilities to contribute to the greater good of society. So let’s change that. Let’s bring back the raw enthusiasm I know exists within us all. As dentists and as respected members of our communities, we must turn to each other to form a strong collaboration amongst ourselves and a united front against any issues that we may face all while remembering that serving others is the true essence of dentistry.

I am both honored and humbled to have been given this opportunity to preside over such a remarkable organization. In the time to come, may the words of Anon resonate within all of us, “You cannot do all the good the world needs, but the world needs all the good you can do.”

I also take pride in having graduated first in my class from U.W. SOD in 1971. No small feat in a class with such dental luminaries as internationally renowned orthodontist and lecturer Vince Kokich and pioneering endodontist mentor John West. Dr. Barry has been selected to join these honorary dental groups: International College of Dentists; American College of Dentists; Pierre Fauchard Academy.

Dr. Barbara BillingsThank you for the effort to recognize the LIFE MEMBERS. I graduated from the U of W Dental School in1979. I love to continue learning so take about 100 hours of continuing education each year. My career highlights occur each day when I am able to go to the office and provide dentistry to the best of my ability for patients (most of whom I consider friends after so many years). I am extremely lucky to be in a profession that values prevention, good health, longevity of treatment outcomes, and respect for those who put their trust in us. The State of Washington has provided an exceptional financial investment to ensure that dedicated, competent professionals will care for our people. I feel it is necessary to give back for the investment made to our education.

My way has been to contribute financially to the University of Washington and to various community clinics. My politics are liberal, and I hope we can again build a strong middle class and provide opportunities for ALL children, regardless of their fortunes of birth. Otherwise, my time away from the office is focused on the arts (both visual and performing), travel, gardening and food, kayaking, and spending time with my wonderful husband, Ernest Vogel. Dr. T. Michael DoyleI am a Seattle native; graduated from Queen Anne High School, then attended UW for three years prior to entering UW School of Dentistry, from which I graduated in 1971. I entered the US Army as a Dental Officer and served three years in Panama. I completed military service and took a fulltime position in the Department of Fixed Prosthodontists at the UCLA School of Dentistry for three years. My wife Roberta and I moved back to Seattle in 1977 at which time I started a general practice in downtown Seattle in the Cobb Building, in addition to a half-time position at the UW Dental School in Restorative Dentistry. I have continued to serve as affiliate instructor at the school and have volunteered for many years at the PROVAIL Clinic for people with disabilities. I have served on multiple committees for our local Society over the years, as well as a short tenure on the WDS Board of Trustees. My office was relocated to the Puget Sound Plaza Building several years

Dr. Johnsen has been very involved in SKCDS committees and leadership including nearly fi ve years as editor of the SKCDS Journal and tireless behind-the-scenes work to promote direct reimbursement as an alternative to traditional dental plans. Dr. Johnsen married his wife, Lauri Ainsworth Johnsen, in 1972 and they shared nearly 40 years together until she passed on due to complications from breast cancer in 2010. They raised two sons, Gregory and Stephen. In his spare time, Dr. Johnsen has written seven books on railroad topics and serves as the President of Yakima Valley Trolleys, a 105 year old streetcar railroad in Yakima. He has been actively involved with the Yakima Trolley since the early 1970s. Additionally, he is passionate about photography, a hobby he has cultivated since childhood. Dr. Richard D. KawamotoDr. Richard Kawamoto graduated from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in 1971. Following graduation he served in the Air Force from 1971-1973. After 40 years in practice, he is still working in the Shoreline area. He is married to Bonnie and lives in Bothell. Dr. Gary A. LincicomeA run-down of my dental career starts with graduation from University of Washington Dental School in 1971. After fi nishing dental school I spent a relaxing two years in the United States Army at Fort Dix, New Jersey. It was nice to travel up and down the East Coast and reaffi rm Seattle, Washington as a career base. I went into private practice with my father in south Seattle for 11 wonderful years: 1974-1985. After his retirement I worked alone for fi ve years before joining forces with Dr. Stuart Vendeland and Dr. Ralph Jarrendt in Renton, Washington, close to Valley Medical Center. The next 20 yearsseemed to pass quickly, thanks to a wonderful staff and great patients. After 50 years of rain and cloudy weather in Seattle, I decided after retirement at age 62 to move to a warmer climate. I now live in a beautiful new home in Green Valley, Arizona, where the weather is great and so is the golf! Continued next page >>

Life Members continued...Dr. Dennis LitowitzFrom the 7th grade on, all I ever wanted was to be a dentist with my own office; and towards that end my education was directed. I was inspired at that age by my family dentist, Keith Yoshino, here in Federal Way who was teaching at the University of Washington Dental School and who had them send me the packet of information for prospective applicants at that early age. That information packet became my guide until I was accepted into dental school after receiving my B.A. (in English Literature) from the University of Washington in 1969. Upon graduation with my dental degree, I went into the Army and was assigned to the 101st Airborne with the Army at Fort Campbell, Kentucky from 1973-1975. I went through perio, crown and bridge, surgery, and prosthetic rotations while treating soldiers returning from Vietnam. After returning to Washington in 1975, I began my own practice in Federal Way while also working for Public Health in Seattle for two years. I also was asked to initiate the outfitting and opening of the original dental clinic at Longacres racetrack where I worked for three years part-time. Somehow during all this, I was asked to help teach in the Operative Dentistry department at the University of Washington, which I did part-time during the 1977-1978 school year. Reflecting back on the last 40 years, dentistry was the best of all worlds. My patients, staff and peers were all my friends and to this day I am still in touch with many of them. I sent out hand-signed Christmas cards every year to every active patient and still hear from many of them over the holidays even now. Last month, I had a married couple of former patients call and stay with me at my place in Ft. Myers, Florida; and, I took them fishing out in Pine Island Sound in my flats skiff. It’s been a long run and not without bumps thrown in on the way, but it was the best, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. I’m sorry I could not attend the recognition meeting at SKCDS but previous plans, friends and fish are calling! Although I’ve been retired for (eight!) years now, I still find it hard to believe. My best to you all!

Dr. James W. “Bill” McHughI graduated from the UW in 1973, served two years as a general dentist in the Army and then completed a one-year GDR, following which I practiced general dentistry in the Burien area for three decades. After retirement, and for a few years before, I volunteered at the Dental School and in fact am still there! Eventually they will kick me out but for now I am having fun! Dr. Jeffrey L. ParrishDr. Jeffrey Langdon Parrish attended the United States Air Force Academy, receiving his BS degree in 1968. He served as an Air Force pilot from 1969-73. Following his military service he began studying dentistry at the University of Washington and graduated in 1979. While at UW he was both Junior Class President and Student Body President for the SOD. He practiced in the area until his retirement in 2002. In addition to running a busy practice, Dr. Parrish has been active in organized dentistry holding offices in the SKCDS, WSDA and the ADA. He was named the WSDA Citizen of the Year in 2004 and contributes a regular column to the WSDA publication. Dr. Parrish’s civic activities have included overseas medical mission trips, involvement with the Redmond Transportation Planning Committee and participation in various political campaigns. In his free time, he enjoys travel and water sports. His family includes his wife, Jo Anne, and two grown daughters.

Give Kids A Smile!

FEBRUARY, 2012 -- If the eyes are the windows to the soul, a smile is the window to the heart… and what better way to keep that heart happy and healthy than by taking care of the smile? The Seattle-King County Dental Society was thrilled to support our members in their selfless efforts to provide desperately needed oral health services to the children in our community yet again, and blown away by the level of commitment we saw.

The data is still coming in, but we have already seen indications of over $36,000 in care provided to over 95 children! With 14 member dentists and their stellar staff members participating this year, we expect those numbers to climb dramatically in the next month.

We are thankful to the many dentists who contributed to this year’s success. Additionally, we would like to thank the Washington State Dental Foundation for their contribution of $1,500 which helped to offset the cost of the goody bags presented to the children who received care. Included in the goody bags were a toothbrush, floss, toothpaste, toothbrush covers, timers and an informative coloring book.

We acknowledge that dentists alone will not be able to solve the ever-growing oral health access crisis. We urge our members to continue their participation in this program and champion the cause of providing access to oral health care within our community.

Thank you to all who participated. We look forward to serving even more needy children in 2013.

“Providing dental care to children in need is really the least I can do. Children are our most precious blessings. To help an indigent child in need of dental care, not only helps the child’s health, it soothes the parents’ heart. As a parent myself, I can understand the broken heart a parent must have to be unable to afford proper oral health care for their children. I am so thankful to my staff who supported me for the last three years and who have volunteered their own time to provide care and education to these kids.” – Lina Kim, DDS

Did we put the FUN in fundraising? You better believe it!There was a great deal of “wearing of the green” at the 17th Annual Auction hosted by the Seattle-King County Dental Foundation on Saturday, March 17, at the Herban Feast. Well lubricated with “shamrocktinis,” we were determined to put the FUN in fundraising, and we succeeded!

The early and generous support of our corporate sponsors was vital in planning this popular event. We would like to thank them for their important contributions toward helping the Foundation reach its goal of eliminating dental pain and infection. Our premier sponsors were Constantine Builders, DP, Inc. and the Washington Dentists’ Insurance Agency. Our Underwriters included NORDIC, Pacific Continental Bank and the Washington Dental Service Foundation. Our Gold sponsors were Burkhart Dental Supply, Durham Law Offices PLLC, Max Technologies, Nakanishi Dental Lab, Physicians and Dentists Credit Bureau and ProTI. We also want to thank our In-Kind supporters: Mac & Jack Brewing Company (beer), Skip Rock Distillers (alcohol) and Office Wraps, Inc. (table centerpieces).

The evening began with premium wine tasting from five superior wineries: Avissi Winery, Dona Paula Winery, J. Bookwalter Winery, Stevens Winery and Two (II) Vintners. Hors d’oeuvres were served while guests had the opportunity to sample these excellent wines and purchase their favorites.

David Crowe, an award-winning comedian, served as our wonderful auctioneer and Master of Ceremonies for the dinner and live auction. He kicked off the evening with a “martini madness” bidding war that resulted in martinis for one lucky table and a basket of unique alcohol from Skip Rock Distillery. The live Auction included our traditional golden retriever as well as some other wonderful items like a Sounders Game Day Package. Other hotly contested items included a romantic night on the town in Seattle, a stay in ahistoric Napa Valley Winery and a wine tour in a chauffeured vehicle.

The highest selling item was the catered Seattle Skyline cruise—for the second year in a row!

The most critical portion of the Auction, our raise-the-paddle or fund-a-need section, raised almost $35,100 for the Foundation. All these donations are 100% tax deductible and, these funds go directly to helping eliminate dental pain and infection. Please see page 21 for a listing of our generous donors to this important part of the Auction.

The audience then capped the evening off with the great Oncore Band. There were a lot of energetic dancers out there. All incriminating pictures have been destroyed—but people sure had fun.

The Event Planning Committee, chaired by Dr. Sarah Fraker, began their work a year ago accomplishing their goal to present this fantastic event. The other committee members included Dr. Karim Alibhai, Dr. CR Anderegg, Dr. Franco Audia, Mr. Robert Brown, Dr. Michelle Caldier, Mr. George Constantine, Dr. Linda Edgar, Ms. Robin Haley, Ms. Melissa Hayes, Ms. Lisa Hess, Ms. Bre Hill, Dr. Cynthia Pauley, Dr. Princy Rekhi, Dr. Karen Sakuma, Dr. Nina Svino, Ms. Janice Thayer, Jennifer Freimund, Sandra Anderson and Krystal Bishop.

We would like to thank all the on-site volunteers who helped to make this auction a success including dental assisting students from Lake Washington Technical College and the dental students at the University of Washington.

The Seattle-King County Dental Foundation Auction is the major source of funding for the Foundation. Thank you to everyone who so generously gave your support to make this event happen for the benefit of people who need dental care in our community. NOW: Mark your calendars for next year’s Gala: Saturday, March 16, 2013—it promises to be a great time!

What you (and the Gala) help support...

The Seattle-King County Dental Foundation and Dental Society are reducing barriers to accessing

dental care. Here’s some information about the programs supported by the Gala:

Dental Care for Dialysis PatientsSince November 2009, Society members have donated over $150,000 in dental care to

patients awaiting life-saving kidney transplants. In order to receive a life-saving kidney

transplant, dialysis patients have to be completely free of infection—including oral disease.

Thanks to the generosity of our dentist volunteers, 10 patients have received transplants, 15

have been cleared for transplant and are awaiting a match and 22 more patients are able to

eat without pain while they undergo dialysis.

Swedish Community Specialty Clinic (SCSC)In September 2011, we opened a free clinic that offers complex extractions for patients

referred from the community dental safety net. Partnering with several organizations, this

dental clinic is located at Swedish Hospital. Designed to treat patients that community clinics

cannot, this vital service saves lives and money as it keeps patients out of hospital emergency

rooms—a much more costly option.

For our first six months, we were open one day a week; beginning in January, we added a

second day of treatment each week. We have treated 78 patients and provided $88,256

in donated care since we opened six short months ago. In addition, volunteer dentists have

extracted 305 teeth.

EXPOSURES Questions

By Al Munk, DDS

I am sick and tired of answering questions. When I was dating the woman I affectionately refer to as my “first wife,” she asked me so many questions that I finally asked her “are there any more questions?” Unfortunately, she has never stopped on this tack and I am constantly bombarded with a never-ending onslaught of queries about topics which I am either completely disinterested in or worse, that I detest.

My next wife (perish the thought, how could anyone stand more than one in a lifetime?!) will be a deaf-mute with a delightful smile and we will wile away the hours in blissful silence with only the occasional conversation in sign language. Arguments will be finalized with a single middle finger salute to each other rather than an oral attack of epithets and similes. We’ll battle like the ants without trumpets or bugles and our war will be none the lesser despite its absence of volume.

As if the questions from “the little woman” were not bad enough, soon my children began asking questions. At first, they seemed harmless enough – “Why do we wear shoes Daddy?” But soon enough, they progressed into subjects better left unsaid, which made Art Linkletter a handsome living while embarrassing a generation of trusting parents. As the kids got older, the questions were straightforward though nonetheless aggravating. “Can I have the car and twenty bucks??” “How come Nina got twenty bucks and I didn’t get any?” Then finally, to the present day, the questions come via email and the cell phone - “Could I have $650 to pay my rent this month?” “I wrecked the car so could I borrow $2,000 which I’ll pay back as soon as I can?” (this always means never!!).

The syndrome is of course rampant around the dental office and of a particularly evil nature. Let’s start with the staff. An employee comes in to your office while you are blissfully reading Golf Digest and closes the door. “Could I ask you a question, Doctor?” What are the odds of this question being something you are going to enjoy, be happy about or make you money? My guess is the odds are from zero to negative one. Your mind races thought past scenarios involving injury, illness and pregnancy and money. You grit your teeth removing the last bit of enamel currently clinging to you occlusal surfaces. And for the thousandth time you must answer the question from your employee which is of course unanswerable.

For there are never true answers to any question worth its salt. That is why there are philosophers, politicians and golf instructors. “Why do I slice the ball?” you innocently ask the golf pro. He doesn’t know, perhaps even God does not know the answer to this question, though I intend to inquire about it myself at the pearly gates – or alternatively at the gates of Hell which, come to think of it, may be where such knowledge is to be found.

Meanwhile, your employee is going on and on about either a raise, the other assistant or her hemorrhoids while your mind drifts to that 30-footer you canned for a birdie last Saturday. You cannot give her an answer because according to Munk’s Law there is no answer so you say you’ll think about it and just hope she forgets about it as you certainly will within a microsecond.

Patients are the final source of inane questions. Perhaps the most annoying of all: “Is there mercury in this filling?” “Will it harm me?” “How long will this filling last?” “Why is my tooth loose?” “Why is my denture loose?” “Why does my tooth hurt?” Etc. etc. etc. ad infinitum. There are no answers to these questions. We don’t know them and we don’t care. The next time a patient asks any of these or any related questions, repeat after me: We don’t know and we don’t care. We don’t know and we don’t care. Say it sincerely and look them in the eye like the books tell you. Try a version of this with your wife too.

Let me know how it works. The more educated among you may wish to get into an existential discussion of knowledge but the rest of you follow my lead. We don’t know and we don’t care. Soon, patients will stop asking questions and you can return to your desk, put your feet up and catch up on your reading or take a nap.

That’s all for now from Ballard.
