Perth airport delays have all but gone with the runway work completed but then we have CHoGM which is causing some congestion for our flights and road ways around the airport. once the dignitaries have departed, things should get back to normal.

We have commenced an extension to our apron area in conjunction with the airport owners which should improve our arrival and departure capabilities.

Y oung athletes in Carnarvon may be the key to australia’s track and field success, according to one of the state’s

leading coaches.Lindsay Bunn, who visited Carnarvon

in September to conduct coaching clinics and help to set up an athletics competition and coaching program, said he had seen tremendous untapped talent in the region.

“I would say that athletes in this area, and in many areas of regional Wa, could provide many future international athletes,” Perth-based Bunn said during a break at the regional primary schools competition. “The kids up here are tremendously talented and I believe it’s because they grow up tougher than they do in the city.

“They have the benefit of growing up in the outdoors without many of the distractions city kids have.

“We had one lad the other day who ran 100 metres barefoot in less than 11 seconds - that’s phenomenal.”

This was Bunn’s fifth visit to Carnarvon, where he helped launch a regional athletics program. His visit has been made possible by a partnership between the Department of Sport and Recreation and Skippers aviation.

He was being assisted by local parents and former runner Paul Mullane, who helped organise a community meeting in august.

“I was keen to get some sort of athletics programs up and running, as we haven’t had anything for six or seven years, and all this

talent is going to waste,” said Mullane.The new athletics program will be

different to anything which has previously operated. There are no forms, no fees and competitions only take place once a month. It’s a combination of ingredients from successful programs in Bunbury, karratha and Jamaica.

“Parents are time-poor today, so it’s no good trying to have weekly competition as we’ve always done,” said Bunn. “We need the parents involved, and we will assist them to coach.

“I also have elements of a simplified teaching program, which is used in Jamaica.

“The other similarity with Jamaica, which produces athletes like Usain Bolt, is that their kids come off grass tracks and grow up tough, too.”

The Skippers sponsorship will help leading coaches travel to the Gascoyne and also provide travel for talented young athletes to compete in Perth.

“Skippers will play a significant role in building the capacity of sport and recreation in the Gascoyne region,” said Department of Sport and Recreation Director General, Ron alexander.

Fremantle will celebrate the ISaF Sailing World Championships with a host of public activities centred on the Esplanade Park in the Worlds’ ‘Village,’ close to the sailing action on Bather Bay. Live music, theatre, fashion, international cooking demonstrations and art exhibitions will make Perth 2011 an extraordinary event for the entire community.

The Perth 2011 Sailing World Championships is expected to generate approximately $41 million for the Western australian economy and has strong backing from both the Western australian and Federal Governments, as well as substantial commercial sponsorship. o ne of the world's last true wilderness areas, australia’s North West can only be described as rugged, wild and beautiful.

Venturing inland from the stretching white coastal sands to red earth country exposes extraordinary rock formations, magnificent waterfalls and expansive desert.

as the sun beats down on this outback frontier, it’s hard to imagine a history as rich as the magnificent landscape, however this very history has been captured to tell a vivid tale, stories previously unrecorded from the remote desert lands of Western australia, from an aboriginal perspective in an exhibition called ‘Yiwarra kuju,’ or ‘one road’ – The Canning Stock Route Project.

In the early 1900s, an ambitious attempt was made to drive cattle from the stations of the kimberly through the Western Desert Region to markets in the South of Western australia.

aboriginal guides were used to locate local waters during the surveying of the stock route.

The Canning Stock Route project is a landmark cultural and artistic endeavour, with some of Western australia’s leading contemporary aboriginal artists contributing their knowledge to a rich cultural repository that explores the history and cultures of the Canning Stock Route.

The project began as a partnership between Perth-based cultural organisation FoRM, and

nine remote aboriginal art and cultural centres in the north of the state with direct connections to the stock route regions. It depicts the history of the century-old, 2,000km stock route that runs from Wiluna to Halls Creek, crossing three deserts along the way.

The exhibition that resulted from the project, ‘Yiwarra kuju,’ is a joint initiative of the National Museum of australia and FoRM, and is an extraordinary blend of paintings, cultural artefacts, photography, oral history and film, created by aboriginal artists and an intercultural team of emerging aboriginal and non-aboriginal curators and filmmakers.

Yiwarra kuji is on display at the Perth Convention and exhibition centre during CHoGM

(october 24 to 30) before being opened to the public for a free, four week season from November 2 to 27, 2011.

The exhibition was shown at the National Museum of australia for six months, closing in January this year. It was the most successful exhibition in the history of the Museum.

The nine art centres across the North West encompass the Martumili artists (Newman, Jigalong, Parnngurr, Punmu, kunawarritji, Nullagine), Yulparija artists (Bidyadanga), Mangkaja arts Resource agency (Fitzroy Crossing), Ngurra artists (Ngumpan and Wangkatjungka), Warlayirti artists (Balgo, Mulan and Billiluna), Papunya Tula artists (kiwirrkurra), kayili artists (Patjarr) and the Birriliburu artists Tjukurba Gallery (Wiluna). n

Vitamin D plays an important role in protecting your bones, as they require vitamin D to absorb calcium and make them strong. Studies show that people with low levels of vitamin D have lower bone density or bone mass.

Vitamin D deficiency has also been linked to increased allergies, colds and lung infections so since we get so much of it from sunshine, you can now see why these conditions are more common in winter.

So how can you get enough Vitamin D? Dietary sources include oily fish and organic egg yolks. If you can’t consume these foods a few times a week, you can take a daily Vitamin D3 supplement from your health food shop.

Sun cream will block 99 per cent of your vitamin D absorption from the sun, so make sure you get some daily unprotected exposure, but of course make sure you don’t get burnt! Moderate sun exposure is healthy, but burnt skin increases melanoma risk.

The australian Cancer Council recommends that during summer, majority of people can maintain adequate vitamin D levels from a few minutes of exposure to sunlight on their face, arms and hands or the equivalent area of skin on either side of the peak UV periods (10am to 3pm) on most days of the week.

In winter in the southern parts of australia, where UV radiation levels are less intense, people may need about two to three hours of sunlight spread over a week to maintain adequate vitamin D levels. n

W orking in the mining industry can mean different things to different families, depending on the way their work/

life balance is structured. Some couples base themselves in a city or large town while one partner works away. Some relocate to the nearest mining town. and yet another choice is both partners doing FIFo/DIDo – sharing the same donga on the same roster on the same site for the same company.

The most obvious benefit is spending lots of time together – which might sound great in theory, but naturally has some pitfalls!

Most couples on a joint FIFo roster seem to share a donga - and there are certainly issues that can arise from living together in a tiny space!

The extent to which couples can manage this arrangement probably depends on how similar their living habits are. Most couples are fairly compatible with day-to-day habits and activities. Really successful couples negotiate around their differences.

We know that individuals differ in lots of ways: how tidy they are; how much TV they like to watch; how much sleep they need; and whether or not they make noises as they eat. In a 'normal' environment, couples can find space to just be themselves without bothering the other person too much. In a donga, even seemingly small differences can make for unbearable relationship stress, and grow into much bigger issues than they otherwise would. For example, if your partner

wants/needs to watch TV late into the night (and you don’t) this becomes a problem when you are sharing a single room. Couples with differing habits really need to work hard on compromise – set and stick to clear ground rules (even as simple as deciding five nights when the TV can be left on and five when it goes off ).

complaints about work and colleagues – and this is a good thing! It’s a good idea to limit work conversations to 10 minutes or so at the end of the day.

Yet another common source of disagreement in FIFo families, including those who work together, is how time off, or R&R time, is spent. This might seem a little surprising. You'd think that couples who work together would have a good understanding of the stresses related to the FIFo lifestyle and would agree about how time at home should be spent. This is often not the case. Because you work away together, friends and family might think you don't need to spend time together when you’re home – and this can lead to unrealistic demands during R&R. They need to remember that you’ve both been working hard and that you haven’t had quality time together. For the sake of a healthy relationship, you need to say ‘no’ to family and friends sometimes, and perhaps introduce set days for particular tasks or seeing particular people. It is really important that you spend time together as a couple when you are at home.

Working on a project (a garden or a house) or sharing a hobby definitely helps to keep couples connected and this is really, really important for couples who work together. Couples who spend a lot of time together don't necessarily know each other any better or communicate better than those who spend a lot of time apart. In fact, there is a real danger of complacency, with the assumption being that you are close and connected just because you are physically together a lot of the time. You can easily (but incorrectly) assume your partner knows what is going on for you emotionally because he is there in the same environment. If we assume this, we won't bother telling him/her verbally – and this puts undue pressure on the partner and the relationship. No matter how much time we spend with someone or how much we love them, it is very important to remember that they can’t read our minds. Your partner can't know with any certainty what you are thinking and feeling, unless you tell them!

Living and working together can make communication a little tricky. Getting the balance right will probably require some practice – no-one wants to “communicate about the relationship” every minute of the day and we certainly don't need to tell our partner every thought and feeling! It's more about making an effort to verbally tell your partner how you’re feeling, rather than assuming they “just know” or “should know”.

an example of this is coming back to the donga, exhausted after a hard day at work. You're grumpy and not in the mood to talk about anything. You just want to go to bed. If your partner wasn't there with you, you would send a text or make a quick call, explain your mood, tell them you love them,

and leave it at that. Your partner back home would then be clear that you're not grumpy with them. BUT, if your partner is with you in the donga at the end of your bad day, you’re more likely to assume they know you're grumpy (and why) and not bother with the niceties.

This does your relationship a major disservice. Your partner might take your grumpy behaviour to mean that you are upset with them, adding to stress and tension for them and the relationship. Talking honestly to your partner goes a long way to creating a positive and trusting relationship. Some couples I know even add humour to this by having a funny code word, like “pina colada” as shorthand for saying “I've had a bad day, I'm tired and grumpy and don't want to talk to you, no offence, I love you very much and hope tomorrow is better”. Try it.

Quick tips • Watch your conversations, make sure the amount of time you spend talking about work and/or colleagues is limited • Aim to have shared interests when at home • Work on communication, don't assume you partner knows what you are thinking and feeling. Let him/her know! • Be upfront about the challenges of sharing a donga and look for solutions rather than blame • Problem-solve any differences about how R&R time is spent

T he mining and resource industry isn’t much different to any other when it comes to standing out from the pack. Showing

your willingness to learn, having a positive attitude and staying away from workplace politics can be applied to almost any sector within the workplace so here are our top five tips for getting ahead in your job.

5. Willingness to LearnShow your eagerness to keep up with the latest systems, be willing to go along to any training courses on offer and take a keen interest in upcoming changes within the company.

There’s nothing worse than the kind of employee who will turn their nose up at new systems because ‘the old one works just fine.’ The world changes and it’s important you can be flexible and do so as well.

4. Respect for the CompanySo it may sound a little obvious, but you’d be surprised how many employees you hear nowadays whinging and whining about the systems in place and the way the company does things.

at the end of the day, if you don’t truly like the company you’re working for, how can you expect to get the best results? and to truly like a company, you need to not focus on the things you don’t like about it, but the things you do. This ties in heavily with point 1.

3. Stay away from the PoliticsEvery society has them; at school it was the

popular girls bitching about everyone else, at university it was the high achievers sniggering at those that didn’t do as well, and in the workplace, the group of workers who get together at lunch to discuss everything that’s wrong with the company and how they could improve it if they were in charge.

The best thing you can do if you want to get ahead in your job is stay well away. You almost never hear of this kind of employee climbing the ladder (because they’re too busy whinging about how they could build a better one).

The same goes for touchy subjects and gossip. Some people naturally just want to stir the pot. No good can come of it, and if you become chummy with this kind of gossiper, soon enough you’ll be the right in the middle of it all and you won’t even know how you got there.

2. achievementIt may not be rocket science, but be the best you can be at your job. There used to be a fear that if you’re the best at your job, you will never be moved elsewhere (as in upwards) because no one will ever be able to replace you. That’s complete rubbish. an employer will soon realise who the high achievers are in the workplace and reward them for it – it’s common sense.

1. Positivity a big one, and you’ll notice there’s a little of this in all of the points mentioned above. Basically, if you’re positive and happy in your role it will show and it will rub off.

Focus on the good things in your current job and not the bad and the same goes for the company, your co workers, your boss – the list goes on. Soon enough, your positivity will be noticed, not only by your employer, but co workers as well. People will be eager to work with you and perhaps they’ll even make a comment to the boss about how great you are to work with.

You’ll be recognised for having a great attitude and rewarded for doing so – positivity only breeds positivity.

It’s only onwards and upwards from there! n

Steps Toward a Happier Life

L ast issue, I spoke about the three steps to achieving resilience in the workplace: improving health and well-being, managing workloads and

building happiness. Now, let’s discuss some of these steps in more detail.

When it comes to health and wellbeing, make sure you have a health care check up; don’t neglect diet and hydration and exercise. It’s also important to manage your stress levels – remember, life is bigger and richer than your job alone. another important element is to keep your mind alert and flexible - the mind needs exercise just like the rest of your body.

as for managing workload, asses your personal rhythms - are you sharpest in the morning or the afternoon? Schedule tasks that require your greatest brain power. You should also invest time in planning. Establish your goals for the year, the quarter, the month, the week and each day. This allows you to be proactive and not simply reactive with your time. Take ten minutes at the end of each day to plan for the next. Something else to remember is to include only as much on your to-do-list as you can actually accomplish in a day. Carrying things over from one day to the next contributes to the feelings of always being behind. Be realistic about the amount of time a task actually takes. Underestimating can result in over-scheduling the day and feeling frustrated about what’s left undone. Something that I feel is very important is to each day schedule something that is fun or inspires you. Giving yourself moments of enjoyment keeps the work from becoming a drudgery.

Established back in 2001, aITP Pty Ltd celebrated its ten year anniversary recently and in today’s tough economic climate,

that’s certainly an achievement. according to aITP’s Business Manager, Melissa

McCann, the company’s success and longevity can be put down to a number of things.

”We still stand out today for a number of reasons including the fact that we offer limited numbers in our classes,” Melissa said. “This enables more one on one time with the trainer and also gives us more time to spend with the students for follow ups.”

PYBaR is proud to have been awarded the contract. The project involves site establishment, decline and level development,

ground support, production drilling, tele-remote bogging and all haulage at the new underground mine with a start-up team in excess of 35 people.

Saracen Mineral Holdings is one of australia’s up and coming mining companies with its assets spanning the world-class mining district of South Laverton in Western australia, supported by the infrastructure of the Carosue Dam operations. Focus over the next 12 months is to develop the underground potential of its Red october, Deep South, Whirling Dervish and Porphyry deposits.

Red october is located approximately 1000kms north-east of Perth and a trial mine is being planned to confirm the geological interpretation and metallurgical properties for the proposed underground operation. While this project may represent a small part of Saracen’s reserve inventory, its potential higher grade can make a significant difference to the company’s production profile.

Utilising their extensive fleet of equipment, PYBaR was able to quickly and easily resource the project and have it mobilised to site. This project is PYBaR’s sixth in Western australia and confirms their position in Western australia as an established mining contractor.

PYBaR looks forward to developing a ‘one team’ approach, working in partnership with Saracen to deliver a successful project for Red october and future sites. n

according to new research from Choosi.com.au, 57 per cent of people in australia are not covered by any life

insurance. of those that are currently covered, nearly two thirds (64 per cent) feel that they don’t have adequate protection. overall this means that 85 per cent of people across the country have a life insurance problem.

YoU oNLY HaVE LIMITED TIME To MakE MoNEYEvery time I am watching the news, some NRL or Rugby Union player is defecting from their team to go and play overseas. Why do they do this and what does it have to do with a financial plan? The answer is simple.

You only have a finite period of time to make money in life. It’s no different in rugby, except when you are a rugby player, you have until about the age of 30 to make your fortune.

This means that everyday you get closer to the age of retirement, you have one less day to earn money to support both yourself and your loved ones into the future.

Your plan should use this as the basis for accumulating wealth as it really frames it well – you only live once and there are no second chances when it comes to how much money you have to retire with. Though remember John Lennon’s quote when doing this - you don’t want to only plan for the future and not live for the now.

your wealth within five years. This will be your driving force.

an even better financial plan is about growth and defending wealth. There is no point having the right mindset - growing your money - and then wasting it or risking it too heavily. You want to defend your money, which means diversifying where you invest, save and spend.

Yes you can own some shares, but consider some cash savings, extra super contributions and more. You want your money protected from one foul swoop on any given industry or sector.

WITHoUT a PLaN, YoUR FINaNCES WILL FaILSet really clear goals on where you want your finances to be in five years. aim to maximise your earnings, minimise your wastage, find ways to grow what money you do have and then ensure you defend it to stop your hard work going to waste.

a plan can be as simple as five written goals on a piece of paper on the fridge. It could also be a contract you write up and sign to help yourself to it.

SAFETy BRiEFing Please listen carefully to the Safety briefing and take the time to read through the Safety on board card prior to takeoff. This will help you familiarise yourself with the emergency exits, brace position and the location of your life jacket.

DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS (DVT)It has been reported that some airline passengers have developed clots in deep blood vessels, often in the lower legs, as a result of sitting for an extended period without exercise or movement.

This condition is known medically as deep Vein Thrombosis, or dVT. If blood clot fragments break off and lodge in other areas of the body such as the lungs, they may cause a possible fatal pulmonary thrombosis when a person starts walking after being immobile for a long time.

The risk factors for dVT include varicose veins, recent surgery or injury in the lower legs, malignant diseases, past history of dVT, obesity, pregnancy and recent childbirth. Anyone with these risk factors is advised to consult a doctor prior to flying to find out how to minimise the risk of dVT.

during the flight, we recommend passengers take the following precautions:

• Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, and minimise intake of alcohol.

• Exercise onboard the aircraft by moving and stretching your toes, rotating your ankles, raising and lowering each leg and massaging your calves gently. In addition, we suggest that you avoid crossing your legs.

SEATBELTSSeatbelts must be firmly fastened for take-off, landing and whilst the seatbelt sign is illuminated. We do recommend that your seatbelt be fastened at all times whilst seated in case of unexpected turbulence.

TRAy TABLES/SEAT BACKSPlease ensure your tray tables and your seat backs are in the upright position for take-off and landing.

SMOKinggovernment regulations strictly prohibit smoking on all domestic flights. Special smoke detectors have been fitted to the toilet on board the aircraft. Smoking is also prohibited on the tarmac and throughout the terminal buildings.

CARRY ON LUGGAGEIf you have carry on luggage please stow it in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you. Hand luggage not correctly stowed may cause injury in the event of unexpected turbulence.

ELECTRONIC DEVICESHazards exist to aircraft systems by electro-Magnetic Interference from Portable electronic devices. The interference can cause aircraft systems to malfunction. To provide adequate protection for the aircraft please note that: mobile phones are not to be used at any time on board the aircraft. other devices such as compact disc players, portable palm top and lap top computers, cassette players, personal electronic organisers or personal video games may be used during cruise only, NoT when the aircraft is taking off and landing.


COnFiRMATiOn OF FLighTSAs Skippers is a ticketless airline, there is no need to reconfirm your flight prior to departure. Passengers are instead required to present photographic identification at the time of check in. Please ensure that you have some form of current identification, such as your drivers’ licence, at hand when checking in. If you do have any queries about travelling with Skippers, such as current flight departure/arrival times or baggage allowances, please contact our Perth Terminal on (08) 9479 1244.

ON TIME SERVICETo assist in maintaining on time departures, Skippers request that all passengers arrive at our terminal for check in at least 45 minutes prior to flight departure.

ChiLDREn FLying ALOnEIf you have children between the ages of 5 and 11 (inclusive) travelling alone, please advise the Reservations Staff when making your booking so that we can make arrangements with you to ensure they are safely in our care throughout their journey. We advise parents and guardians not to book flights for unaccompanied minors via the internet.

in-FLighT AMEniTiESTo make your flight more comfortable, newspapers, magazines, pillows and children’s activities are available on most of our flights. cold refreshments, sandwiches and snacks are usually offered on all Skippers’ flights, with tea and coffee available on our brasilia and dash-8 aircraft services. deluxe catering and alcoholic beverages can be made available on charter or contract flights by prior arrangement.

TAXISWhere a local taxi service is available, please advise your Skippers’ flight crew if you require a taxi on your arrival. for your convenience, a taxi rank is also available on Valentine Road at the front of Skippers’ Perth Terminal with a free taxi phone available in the terminal foyer. CAR HIREfor all your vehicle hire requirements, Skippers can recommend a number of car rental companies that can arrange to drop off and collect hire cars at our Perth terminal.

that sucks in everyone who travels with her. you’ll miss flights, misplace baggage and somehow be seated in the same seat as her.fifi - don’t travel with Jules Lund. despite a decade working on a travel program, he still manages to leave his carry-on bags on the plane, leaves his wallet in the taxi, and forgets to book hotels so when you turn up in the middle of the night after a long flight, you get turned away.

MosT EMBARRAssINg TRAvEL MoMENT: fifi - I learnt the hard way not to wear underwire bras when going through uS airport security checkpoints. Strip searches are no fun regardless of how attractive the guard is.Jules - Well, the only thing more embarrassing than stripping down to a violet
