The UniTed SkirTS of AmericA

The United Skirts of

America was founded

on the blood, sweat

and estrogen of our

foremothers, who

won us the freedom to

choose...to break The

Rules, to wear combat

boots or high heels, to

run for office or run a

marathon, to form our

own rock groups instead

of being groupies, to

shatter Glass Ceilings

and Glass Slippers, to

shoot hoops instead

of settling for hoop

skirts. The ones who

came before us made

it possible for our

daughters to dream

bigger, to have the

chance to grow up to

be President and turn

the Oval Office into

the Ovary Office. In

the United Skirts of

America, every day is

Independence Day!

from The ediTor

It might be a tired cliche, but the fact is that food brings people together. Whether it’s

family dinner or wine and dessert night with the girls, it’s hard to remember a good

conversation or fun time that didn’t include food. This month’s issue features women

who have made a full-on commitment to creating and sharing culinary treats with the

rest of us—and they’re really good at it. While it’s fun to create masterpieces in our own

kitchens, sometimes it’s even more fun to focus on the people we’re eating with and let

the professionals work their magic.

from The foUnder And nATionAl ediTor

Nikki [email protected]

I am a person who yearns to throw memorable dinner parties. You know the kind in

books and movies—wine bottles littering the rustic table, strings of lights in the trees,

creative types quoting T.S. Eliot, a moon rising above the trees. But even more, I yearn

to have people cook for me because it speaks to me of love. Here is my earliest memory

of a meal: I’m on the floor in my grandmother’s kitchen behind the wood stove, asking

for bacon. Is it a real memory? Or one I’ve been told? If it’s not real, I have made it so.

I can see the dusty linoleum, smell the thick-cut bacon frying, see the turkey feathers

my grandmother used to clean the stove top. “I want meat,” is my demand as the only

grandchild, the golden girl, the chubby little dark-haired girl in a pinafore. A few years

later, I wake up in a cold bedroom under piles of quilts. I can hear the low murmur

of the farm report on the radio. It means my grandfather is up and has awakened the

slumbering fire in the stove while my grandmother dresses. I dash from the warmth of

my bed through the icy dining room into the kitchen, where we worship at the wood

stove. Bacon—always lovely, crisp, thick bacon. Toast, made in the oven and retrieved

with a long, two-pronged fork. Eggs, gently turned and eased onto a plate. Real butter.

Plum preserves from the tree I can see just outside the window. Smoky, strong tea, brewed

from a strainer in the cup by my plate. I’m a child, but my grandparents give me hot,

sugary tea every morning. Having tasted heaven I will never be a fast-food child. Having

tasted love, I will always remember it.

light in autumn, a single hawk in a high blue sky, someone lost reappearing in my dream,

passing isolated farmhouses on back roads, de'ja' vu moments, lighted rooms of strangers

from the street outside, bare trees silhouetted against a winter sunset, the smell of

wood smoke, ''Gymnopedie No. 3,'' the moon's path on water, the end of the party.

I Remember by Joe Brainard

I’ve been fascinated lately with kintsukuroi, the Japanese art of fixing cracks in

pottery with gold lacquer and regarding the resulting piece as more beautiful

for having been broken. I’ve always thought of my surgery scars as badges of

courage, so why not the life scars left behind that no one can see? Filling in

the pain with rivers of gold.
