SMALL GROUP LEADER GUIDE
Link / Week 2
LEADER PREP ____________________ BOTTOM LINE Prayer isn’t about the words you say, but the way you pray.
SCRIPTURE Matthew 6:9-13 NIV
GOAL OF SMALL GROUP To show students one way to pray and to encourage them to practice this prayer habit in their own lives.
THINK ABOUT THIS Prayer may be challenging for your students in this phase, but specifically praying out loud. Your few may be hesitant to participate in prayer during your Small Group time because they don’t know what to say or are nervous about how others will perceive what they say. As they mature both in faith and development, they’ll grow more confident in themselves and the way others see them. This will hopefully lead them to take more public steps of faith like prayer in your group. Don’t force them, but lead and guide them.
CONVERSATION GUIDE ______________________________________________ This guide is a suggestion, not a formula. Adjust the questions and activities as needed, and don’t feel like you need to do, or ask, everything you see here. JUST FOR FUN Draw a picture of the Anterior Cingulate in the brain!
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS You all are amazing artists! Now let’s talk about what we learned helps the Anterior Cingulate you just drew develop in your brain—prayer! 1. On a scale of 1-10, how comfortable are you praying to God?
2. On a scale of 1-10, how comfortable are you with praying out loud? 3. What’s one thing you notice about the way some people pray? 4. What’s one reason middle schoolers might be intimidated or
nervous to pray?
5. Do you think God cares about how we pray? Why or why not?
XP (EXPERIENCE) Pass out the “Prayer Links Us To God” worksheet and allow time for everyone to fill it out. Then answer the remaining discussion questions and end in prayer. 6. What’s one example of something you can thank God for when you
pray?
7. What’s one example of something you can ask God for when you pray?
8. What’s one example of something someone your age may need to ask God’s forgiveness for?
9. This week, what’s one thing you need prayer for?
NOTE: After your group shares their prayer needs, close your time by praying together for the requests that were shared. It’s a great way to model prayer for your students and give them an opportunity to pray if they want to as well.
PRAYER LINKS US TO GODPrayer is our link - our direct
connection — to God. Sometimes it
can be hard to know what to pray or
even how to pray. But what matters is
what’s in our heart. It’s not about
the words we say, but how we pray.
Fill in the links with things
you’d like to pray for and use
what you wrote to honestly come
to God in prayer this week.
