Introduction
Buildings represent a large and dynamic portion of electricity and thermal energy requirements for New York (62 percent of statewide energy consumption and 50 percent of greenhouse gas emissions). The development and deployment of energy efficiency technology in buildings lags behind that of other sectors (transportation, industrial). Reasons
• Wide diversity of energy-consuming & energy-saving technologies in buildings. • Complexity of the economic and regulatory environment in which buildings are built and retrofitted • Fragmentation and diversity of the building industry • Misalignment of incentives between various stakeholders • Intimate connection between human behavior and building energy consumption

Impact of Major Disasters & Emergencies on NYS Infrastructure
13
Impact of Disruptions/Loss of Power Grid on Buildings
Residential After 4 hrs food in fridge begins to spoil Most appliances inoperable Darkness (risk of fires increases due to the use of candles) Most Heat Systems inoperable (Availability of Natural Gas, Propane, Heating Oil) Sump pumps inoperable causing flooding in basements (ground water) Well pumps inoperable – lack of water. Commercial Unable to conduct business transactions Security & safety compromised Elevators inoperable (trapped individuals) HVAC inoperable
MultiFamily Same as Residential High Rise – no water on upper floors, inoperable elevators

The High Performance Builders Challenge program produced the 1st Certified Passive House in New York State.
Wedlick house in Claverack, NY.
A Passive House is a very well-insulated, virtually air-tight building that is primarily heated by passive solar gain and by internal gains from people, electrical equipment, etc. Energy losses are minimized.
18
Made in New York (Selux Corporation) energy efficient LED walkway lighting and PV outdoor lighting fixtures.
19
Sylvania QUICKTRONIC© PowerSHED™ Ballast
High Efficiency Demand Response Ballast
Low-cost, 30% dimming ballast and power-line carrier signaling system for controlling commercial linear florescent lighting for electrical load management and demand response.
• Low marginal cost per ballast
• Control hundreds of lights from a single control point
• Nearly imperceptible dimming in most circumstances
Installation of a Advanced Climate Technologies (Manufactured in Schenctady, NY) two-stage, high efficiency, low emissions, gasification, wood chip/pellet boilers at the W!ld Center in Tupper Lake, NY
High efficiency (86.5%), residential, oil-fired boiler by Utica Boiler. Standard sulfur heating oil generally limits efficiency to about 87%.
ECR (Utica, NY), 97% efficient gas-fired, condensing, residential boiler. Among the top AFUE rated boilers.

Eco-friendly Insulation and Packing Materials from Mushrooms. Ecovative (Green Island, NY)
24
HEPAiRx – an energy efficient window mounted room air purifier for asthma suffers (Air Innovations of Syracuse, NY)
