BLACK & VEATCH Black & Veatch is collaborating with cities across the U.S. to add sensors and communication networks to their street-side assets. Through this technology infusion, city streetlights, phone booths, bus shelters, and electric vehicle (EV) charging kiosks become multi-tasking technology platforms, often referred to as smart street furniture, that host an array of smart applications. Black & Veatch is collaborating with cities across the U.S. to add sensors and communication networks to their street-side assets. Through this technology infusion, city streetlights, phone booths, bus shelters, and electric vehicle (EV) charging kiosks become multi-tasking technology platforms, often referred to as smart street furniture, that host an array of smart applications. These applications can provide on-going revenue streams, improve quality of life, enhance city-to-citizen interaction, and drive connectivity across neighborhoods.

ADVANCING DIGITAL STREET SMARTS

As cities look for economical ways to enhance urban

appeal and services, smart street furniture offers a unique

technology solution. Leveraging their existing assets,

such as streetlights and outmoded phone booths, cities

are creating next generation infrastructure by linking

them to public carrier or city networks. These connections

facilitate new services and benefits to citizens and visitors,

such as Wi-Fi, mobile charging, interactive city maps, and

real-time city information and alerts. In addition, cities can

gather air quality, traffic, and noise data from sensors on

the smart street furniture to better manage city dynamics

and boost neighborhood safety.

Smart street furniture helps cities establish a digital

public way, which bridges the technology divide across

neighborhoods, empowering citizens and enabling

greater citizen-to-business and citizen-to-city interaction.

In addition, smart street furniture helps form the

technology foundation of a smart city. Over time, cities can

add applications to the platform to achieve greater levels

of connectivity and link systems, allowing electric, gas,

water, and wastewater utilities to work in harmony with

other systems such as transportation, public health, and

emergency response. When operations are integrated,

communities become environmentally and economically

sustainable and convey a higher quality of life to residents.

AFFORDABLE TRANSFORMATION, MULTIPLE

BENEFITS

Through innovative funding, cities can often install smart

street furniture projects at no cost and reap continued

economic return through revenue streams, amplified

efficiency, and increased retail sales. For example, New

York City is funding its smart kiosks entirely through

advertising proceeds, which will generate $500 million

in revenue for the city. Similarly, cities are swapping

traditional sodium lamps on their streetlights for light-

emitting diodes (LEDs), installing control systems, and

even adding solar panels to net 60-85% streetlight

energy savings, halve their annual maintenance costs,

and significantly decrease carbon loading. As another

illustration, at no cost to them, cities can install EV

charging kiosks, which can evolve to include Wi-Fi and

smart grid connection. Cities can strategically develop

smart street furniture near public transportation lines

or retail centers to draw public interest and invigorate a

community.

BLACK & VEATCH IS HELPING TO DEPLOY MORE THAN 7,500 PUBLIC WI-FI-ENABLED KIOSKS, AND WE ARE PARTNERS WITH THE SMART + CONNECTED COMMUNITIES INITIATIVE, WHICH WILL DEPLOY NUMEROUS SMART KIOSKS ALONG KANSAS CITY STREETS.

DISTRIBUTED INFRASTRUCTURE EXPERTISE

Smart street furniture deployment often involves multiple

vendors, numerous independent systems, and complex

system integration and task management. We are experts

in smart city technology integration, including wireless

communications, sensors, municipal fiber, and renewable

energy. Moreover, we understand how specialized

telecommunications equipment interfaces with both

the communications and electrical infrastructure. Our

experience in analytics and first-hand knowledge of
