Sessional Teaching Team Feb 2014 – June 2014 Griffith University, Brisbane, Queensland Australia Description: I taught 4th year undergraduate and Masters Students ecosystem services concepts. In this 13 week planning design studio students identify best practice management and develop a policy framework including implementation guidelines for incorporating ecosystem services into regional land-use planning.

Key Achievements: - Provided the university an opportunity to

expand learning opportunities in a subject currently not taught in Australian universities

- Provided foundations for new generation planners to learn ecosystem services concepts that can be applied in their practical and professional careers

Ecosystem Services Project Manager June 2005 – Dec 2013 SEQ Catchments, Brisbane, Queensland Australia Description: I coordinated the South East Queensland (SEQ) Ecosystem Services Project aimed at developing an ‘agreed’ framework for ecosystem services across stakeholders; and to mainstream ecosystem services into natural resource management, policy and planning across the region. Here I worked across all levels of government, industry, business, non-government, academia, Traditional Owners and the community to develop and implement information and tools supporting ecosystem services assessments. Over 190 people were involved in the frameworks development through facilitated workshops, Expert Panels and Think Tanks.

Key Achievements: - Ecosystem services became Policy under the

SEQ Regional Plan 2009 – 2031 (the statutory plan for managing growth in the SEQ region); and the framework became the Program to meet 3 policies within this plan.

- Ecosystem services became a Guiding Principle in the Natural Resource Management Plan 2009 – 2031.

- Ecosystem services were incorporated into local government planning schemes, community plans, and water resource and nature conservation strategies.

- The project won a Planning Institute of Australia Award for Excellence in Environmental Planning, Rural or Conservation.

- The framework was developed into a website for free and open access to stakeholders: www.ecosystemservicesseq.com.au

- Successfully delivered outcomes within a complex program, tight budgets and timeframes.

EARLIER EMPLOYMENT: I obtained a Degree in Hospitality Management in 1994 excelling in programs such as Quality Assurance and Total Quality Management. Declining a Scholarship offered by the Ritz Carlton hotel chain in favour of travel, I then spent 6 years travelling around Australia utilising my hospitality skills. During this time I worked in a diversity of establishments from 5 stars (e.g. Ritz Carlton, Sydney) to ‘outback’ pubs (e.g. Denver City Hotel, Coolgardie); and in a diversity of roles from Maître De, Restaurant and Bar Manager, Conference Coordinator, Front Office and Duty Manager. I also spent a period of this time working in the (gold and coal) mines. I hold a truck licence, a hiab operator’s ticket, and basic rigging and scaffolding tickets. It was during this period of travel I developed a passion for knowledge and understanding of ‘people’ and ‘place’. I therefore returned to the east-coast of Australia in 2001 and began to change career direction from hospitality management to the study of socio-ecological relationships.

Griffith University Jan 2004 – Dec 2007 Whilst completing my undergraduate studies I played an active role in supporting the university by holding positions such as Ambassador, First Year Student Mentor, Student Representative and first year Chemistry Tutor for the Gummurri Indigenous Centre. SEQ Catchments June 2005 – July 2006 Whilst completing undergraduate studies I also completed an internship with SEQ Catchments, the community natural resource management organisation for the South East Queensland region. During this time I liaised with stakeholders, developed communication materials and supported project officers on a diversity of on-ground projects. Indigiscapes Environmental Education Centre July 2002 – Jan 2003 I worked reception and the front counter where I greeted visitors and provided environmental information on the local area. I also conducted nature walks and managed their gift shop. Queensland Fisheries and Forestry Feb 2002 – June 2002 I participated in the Spotted Mackerel Stock Assessment and Moreton Bay Bug By-Catch Assessment programs. In these roles I identified, counted, weighed, measured and recorded species. As well, I played a negotiating role with fisher-persons at markets to access stock for on-site assessments or to acquire species for laboratory assessments. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services July 2001 – Dec 2001 I developed fact sheets on rare, endangered and threatened plant species, participated in seed collections and worked in the QPWS native plant nursery. Australian Marine Conservation Society Jan 2001 – Dec 2001 I worked on reception responding to questions and providing information on marine conservation issues. I also updated their website, developed articles for their newsletter and created fact sheets. I was a key researcher in the development of Australia’s Sustainable Seafood Guide.

Doctor of Philosophy 2010 - 2015 Australian National University, Australian Capital Territory Thesis Title: A methodology for integrated ecosystem services assessments across multiple scales. This research is premised on the notion that to sustainably manage natural resources for ecosystem service provision across a nation, a framework is required to enable integrated ecosystems services assessments across multiple scales. Since the release of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment in 2005 many ecosystem service frameworks have been developed. A lack of analysis into why these frameworks are methodologically different, however, hinders the potential to determine an appropriate framework to develop or use. By analysing drivers underpinning these methodological differences, this research answered the question: what is an appropriate methodology (process, information and tools) for integrated ecosystem services assessments across multiple scales? To answer this question document and literature reviews ensured this research drew on an existing and broad body of knowledge; applied research was used to develop a framework in the real world at the regional scale in Australia; and multiple case study analysis with semi-formal interviews was used to analyse frameworks developed at the national (i.e. the US EPA’s Ecosystem Services Research Program) and multi-national (i.e. UK National Ecosystem Assessment) scales. Outcomes are a set of Recommendations for determining appropriate processes, information and tools for integrated ecosystem services assessments across multiple scales. Bachelor of Science (First Class Honours) in Australian Environmental Studies Griffith University, Queensland 2006 - 2007 Thesis Title: A Framework for Incorporating Ecosystem Services into Natural Resource Management in South East Queensland. This research discussed the rationale for advancing the concept of ecosystem services in the SEQ region in the context of sustainable development; and identified the need to develop a consistent approach to the assessment of ecosystem services so to provide a tangible link between the policy, technical and socio-economic streams of natural resource management. It described the process and techniques applied to develop the SEQ Ecosystem Services Framework. As well, it provided a critical review of the process and components of the framework in terms of key considerations for incorporating it into natural resource management and decision making. Areas to further improve the framework were identified.
