What is smell?
● Imagine that you had to describe what a pizza smells like to a person who had never smelled a pizza before.
● the best way to do it is to probably say “it is like something else.”
● describing what something smells like is as hard a describing what the color Green looks like to a blind person
● so basically smell is one of the most important senses in our body
Activity Time !!!!!!!
● Smelling and tasting relationship experiment:close your nose and eyes to figure out what the food is by tasting
Raise your hand if you want to participate in this experiment as soon as you see this! (1)
Smell and taste relationship● Most people think that tongue control taste. But tongue is only used to identify
sour, sweet, bitter and salt.Actual taste is distinguished by smell. Researcher said that tongue is only responible for 20% of taste and remaining 80% is in charge of smell.
● Having no sense of can be very critical. Since smelling is responsible for 80% of taste so without smelling poeple can’t taste which can cause people to make the food more salty, sweet, spicy, sour and bitter which might cause a health problem like heart disease.
Why is nose important?1. Breathing
-hair in the nose filter the air-air goes in the nasal passage-before air goes in, the nose it is warmed-also let out air, (sneeze)-nose is related to immune systems
2. Smelling foods, dangerous things (ex: fire, gas)-Smelling function in outline (how do we smell)-for dogs: wet nose is important for perception of smell.
3. Tasting food-if you close your nose while eating something, you won’t taste it.-done by olfactory system.
Structure of nose (Tissue)Tissue in nose:The nasal skin is divided into 3 parts: (distensible: flexible & mobile)
-upper third section: It is thick and distensible part of the nasal skin
-middle third section: It’s the thinnest and least distensible part of the nasal skin
-lower third section: It’s as thick as the upper third, but it has more sabaceous glands, especially at the tip of the nose
● Nasal muscle is also divided into 4 parts which allows nose movement
-elevator muscle group -compressor muscle group
-depressor muscle group -dilator muscle group
Structure of nose (External)
● Nasal bones: They are 2 bones that connects vertically through the top and middle of nose.
● Septal cartilage: connects nasal bones at their inferior border and forms a division in nose.
● Lateral nasal cartilage: connective tissue below nasal bone that connects septal cartilage on either side
● Major alar cartilage: below lateral cartilage and forms tip of nose and nostrils.
● Minor alar cartilage: smaller plate that connects major cartilage. ● Nostrils: the openings to a nose
Structure of nose (Nasal Cavity)● Vestibule: above nostril and lined with hair-bearing skin.● Septum: wall made of bone and cartilage that seperates nasal
cavity● Hard plate: seperates oral cavity from nasal cavity● Soft plate: closes nasal cavity from oral cavity while swallowing. ● Olfactory nerve: transmit sense of smell from nasal cavity to brain● Choana: opening to pharynx● Upper, middle, lower Meatus: they are the passage of nasal cavity● Upper, middle, lower turbinate(concha): long narrow bone shelf
that protrudes into breathing passage of nose
How do we smell?
● Smell is the first sense you use when you are born. ● Smell starts when you sniff molecuels from the air.● 95% of your nasal cavity is just used to filter the air.● Then the olfactory epithelium is covered with mucus that
catches the odor molecules● when they desolve they bind to the olfactory reseptor cells
which send signals to the olfactory tract up to your brain● it passes trough the amigdual, thalamus, and the neocortex
How do we smell (2)
● unlike other senses smell goes to the different regions of the brian even before hitting the relay center
● when hitting the amigdual, thalamus, and the neocortex the brain reactes to it by conductiong some kind of action
● for example the fight or flight response, help you recall memories or making mouth water
Why is smell important?
● Smell is a very important sense becasue smell can detect danger that are not seen.
Example: a fire on an apartment cannot be seen but smell can detect a burning smell and escape from the burning apartment.
smell is one of a gate way to memory because we usaually memorise something by how it smell, look like.
● Smell is not only important to human but also to animals because most animal uses their sense fo smell to detect for food and relatives.
Example: Dogs have better sense of smelling than human which allow them to find food, water and even identify someone just by smelling
● We would be able to tell the taste of food before eating, by smelling it.
Dog vs. Human● Well then why do dog have better sense of smell then
human?● The strength of the sense of smell depends on the
olfactory epithelium● The dogs olfactory epithelium is 20 times bigger than the
humans olfactory epithelium● Unlike humans the dogs sense of smell dominates their
other senses● Dogs have more smelling receptors than humans
Activity Time !!!!!!!
● Smelling experiment:try to figure out the food by smelling only!

lemon orange
How does smell affect people?● smell can affect people’s emtion because when one smell
things like perfume, flower, etc they emotionally feels good and positive.
● On the other hand when one smell rotten food they feel disgusted and annoyed.

● New studies proven that if one can’t smell properly there is chance of one being a psychopath!
