• Since Vaisala has stopped producing the Milos system we need to replace our Milos stations.

• We plan to keep all the existing sensors.

• We need to replace the data logger and communication.

• We want to build a system with modular “off-the-shelf” equipment to avoid being in the hands of one supplier, and to have a more flexible system.

• We want to start with IP communication so that we can start using web -cameras etc.

• We wish to find some back up communication system.

• Our data users wishes for more frequent data acquisition, e.g. every 5-10 minutes.

• We want to transfer more raw data directly to SMHI but still have some kind of data logging at the station in case of communication failure.

• In the future we might use “intelligent” sensors with built-in-communication as stand alone parameters for a more flexible network.

This is what we are testing since fall 2012

Our intension is to test this system with all the sensors we normally use at our AWS.

Next step maybe. To add a logger to get some redundancy.

Benefits and disadvantages

+ We will get a more flexible system.+ We can choose devices with a certain function from several suppliers.+ Cheaper to purchase?+ ?

-We need more knowledge about linux programming, ip communication etc “in-house”. Resource consuming.-Incompatible devices?-Risk of getting many different versions of equipment at the stations? Hard to administer?-?
