SMS Based Electrical Energy Mete r:A Hardware Design

Abstract Besides a ir and water , e lectr ic ity is one o f the mos t im por tan t elementsin hum an l i fe nowadays. Electr ici ty i s needed t o make a l l th e e lectr ic and e lectronicdevices working prope rly. In Malaysia, Tenaga N asional Berhad TNB) is responsiblein supplying the electr ici ty to al l houses and premises. This paper describes thedeve lopment o f pow er m eter read ing sys tem w i th in tegra t ion w i t h GSM network .The device created can help Tenaga Nasional Berhad to o verco me their problem s incaptu ring m ete r reading as t incurs high cost. This p roject con centrates o n designinga system t ha t can send me ter reading from the user premises t o Tenaga NasionalBerhad off ice via SMS. The data tra nsm itted wi l l be received by the database systemto analyze, generate a b i l l and store the data. The implementat ion of the pro jectinvolved two d i f ferent components; software and hardware. Microcontro l lerPIC16F877A was used in this pro ject and was p rog ram me d using Mpla b softwa re.The program and th e designed c i rcu i t were s im ulated using Proteus software t omake sure t was work ing p roper ly . The pro to ty pe me ter was connected to th eci rcui t to send th e data using the GSM mode m. A t the f ina l s tage, th e com pletesystem was in tegra ted w i th in i ts hardware and so f tware to tu rn these tw ocomponents in to one complete system. Current ly , the prototype is su i table to beapply in a rura l envi ronment due to the indiv idual house is scattered randomly atpart icu lar region. Thus the prototype could ease the author ized to manage theelectr ical bi l l eff iciently.Keyword :SMS GSM Modem, microcontrol ler , m ete r reading

Figure 5 shows the schematic diagram of the connect ion between th e c i rcui t andcable connector (RS232). This circuit was tested to make sure i t s abi l ity to send the datathrough the GSM m odem . From the tes t it was found that the complete system worked asexpected. Some min or problem s were ide nti f ied and manage d to be rect i f ied and solved. Asillustra ted i n Figure 6, custo me r bil l in g system located at th e server manages the SMS sentt o ca lcu late th e am oun t based on th e meter reading. The cur rent m eter reading minus w i thprev ious meter reading to produce the total usage. Figure 7 i l lus t rates the amountgenerated f rom the system.

As an overall , the imp lem enta t ion o f th e pro ject was a success. However a f ewrecomm endat ion need t o be taken in to account when developing this project in future, the yare; back-up powe r supply to cont inuously supply power t o th e house, mem ory dev ice thatcan store the pow er usage (K wh ) in case of p owe r failure, and an LCD display instead of 7segments display which can display mor e informa tion than t he 7-segments.
