Treasurer Tina reported that we ended the year with $2,454.42, and Newsletter Editor Amy informed everyone that the deadline for submitting articles for the newsletter is the 1st of each month. Bob Morris announced that first time 5K, 10K, half marathon, and marathon runners will receive a special award at the All-Chapter Gala. If you ran your first race of these distances in 2011, email Bob right away. Winners must be present at the event to receive their award. Social Chairperson Faith talked more about the Gala and encouraged everyone to attend. The theme color for the Laguna Hills chapter is royal blue. Faith also announced the December Spirit Point winners. Than Duong was the overall winner and received a $20 gift certificate. Amy Katz, Greg Beck , and Teri Styles tied for second place, and Craig Innis, Grace Innis, and Tina Ingegneri tied for third place. For 2012, members can only win the Spirit Award once per year, but it’s important to log points throughout the year for the cumulative awards at the end of the year. There will also be a new Mileage Award Program where members can earn prizes for the miles logged at the Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday fun runs, as well as the Club Races. When you log your points on Meetup, also indicate the number of miles run under the comments. And finally, the Top 10 with the most spirit points for 2011 were awarded. Winners were given a Dry-Fit Nike A Snail’s Pace short-sleeve shirt. And the grand prize for most points logged in 2011 went to Amy Katz, who earned herself a club membership renewal, free race entry, a pair of New Balance shoes, and her name on the club plaque which will be displayed in the store. Don’t forget to start logging your points for 2012! Congratulations to the winners: 10. Gloria Rendon-Thomas 9. Craig Innis 8. Gabby Castro 7. Faith Morris 6. Greg Beck (tie) 6. Grace Innis (tie) 4. Yoga For Runners: An Interview with Club Member Meleah Shank

Why is Yoga beneficial for runners?

Yoga is a great cross training workout to help all

types of runners improve their strength, speed,

and focus they need during a race. Yoga is a

physical practice that helps bring the mind and

body connection in the forefront of training, by

emphasizing on the breath, and the linking of the

breath to the sequence of poses. As runners, we

use our arm and leg muscles, hips and core to

propel us forward. Yoga can help open,

strengthen and lengthen those areas and help

improve overall flexibility, balance, and strength. Runners should try Yoga because it will benefit their biomechanics

through their range of motion, as well stability in core and posture. Yoga also helps to calm the mind and harness the

focus you need when racing. Runners can also benefit from Yoga given the physical practice of the "asanas" or poses,

are rhythmic in nature, just like in running. Yoga serves as another platform to train a runner's mind, for instance, to

persevere through a difficult pose perhaps, and/or deepening the breath as he/she stay still during a pose--- focus and

perseverance on the mat will translate out onto the race course in return.

Is it necessary for someone to be flexible in order to practice Yoga? How should beginners get started?

You do not need to be flexible to start a Yoga practice. All you need is an open mind and a patient heart -- give yourself

permission to try something new, even if it's uncomfortable at first-- allow your mind to open up to the possibility! Most

people who start out in Yoga classes are in fact, usually inflexible, stiff, and have tight muscles-- that is the reason they

are there. After several classes, students report a remarkable improvement in their range of motion and overall health.

Beginners should try to seek out beginning Yoga classes, taught by certified Yoga instructors, and designed for

beginners. These classes usually take the students through a broad general sequence of Yoga poses that provide a good

stretch and offer a balance of core and balance strengthening series. Generally, beginning Yoga classes are non-heated

and last for 60 minutes. Prepare to work hard, expect to generate heat in the body, so just like any workout-- fuel right

about an hour before you practice, ensure you are well-hydrated, and bring water with you to class. Most importantly,

keep an open mind and find the joy and fun in the experience.

What is your favorite Yoga pose after a long run or hard work out? I have several favorite post-run "must do"

Yoga poses I do routinely after a long run or hard workout. Pyramid Pose, Pigeon, and Downward Facing Dog are my 3

go-to poses after a long hard run!
