DASHILAR DESIGN COMMUNITY – snapshots FIND MORE ON BJDW.ORG AND WWW.DASHILAR.ORG OPEN heART Design for China exhibition – Quanyechang A grand exhibition of crossover experiments between art and design by local creatives inspired by a Neo-Classical Chinese style, concerts, performances and talks hosted in the most stunning piece of architectural heritage in the area, a centennarial Grand Bazaar. Dashilar Project and Dashilar Pilot Project Exhibitions No. 120 Yangmeizhu Titled Sanjing Community Building, the exhibition explains the theory, research and practice in transitioning from the Experimentation to Community Building phase of the project. Proposals and their applications, it will lead to a road map for widespread resident participation in the Dashilar Project. Tours of Dashilar can be registered for here and at the rear of the space a brand new pop-up concept store with special products created by and from Dashilar, as well as publications on the area. The Humble Hostel, a prototype for a mechanically operated one bedroom space for a distributed hotel in the area (Cao Pu Architects); Plug-In Courtyards (People Architecture Office); 22sqm Model Apartment (YEH! Architects); fully operational MircroYuan’er (children’s library and design workshop/residency) by hutong virtuoso architect Zhang Ke of standardarchitecture studio; and new lights and tableware products by Atlas Studio at work with a traditional lantern maker, among others. DASHILAR PILOTS 2015: ZAYUAN 2.0 and INHERITANCE OF CRAFT The Thick Wall by DAMU Design: a series of detail oriented interventions to improve the aesthetic quality of existing architecture and streets, while integrating new functional components to improve the quality of life in the interior domestic realm. The Thick Wall is a 3 dimensional volumetric façade between the hutong and courtyard that serves both private and public functions. These new structures will organize and screen existing functional elements of the facade and add new functions that for new useable spaces. Elevation: Elevators are of daily use for the people in Beijing, while Hutong dwellers use Zayuan (courtyard space for multiple families) as the doorway to their private spaces. Jammed in the overcrowding pattern of the city, these transition semi- public spaces are viewed not suitable for active communications. However distinguished they might be from each other, the courtyard and the elevator incorporate into a hyper-mixed concept, which is shown in the ELEVATION project. The fusion of the elevator with the courtyard offers a dramatic variation of space, a new tool for the interventional urban renewal. The project is developed by the team of AIIA, a group of young architects led by Professor Zhu Jingxiang from the School of Architecture, Chinese University of Hong Kong. Double Happiness: by Studio Ramoprimo, the project explores ways of reorganizing new public functions that cannot find space at home. It proposes a widespread system of attractive hubs dotting the entire district with new public services. These can vary from the more usual urban camping, pigeon raising or gardening, to more community oriented uses like public stages for theatre and performances, art ateliers, playgrounds and swimming pools, platforms for playing badminton or skating, telescope stations for watching stars and temporary markets. This urban vision will then be further investigated with interventions on single Dazayuan houses. Leaf Screen by Alexander Åhnebrink: Domestic living space in the Dashilar hutongs is limited and a single room needs to cater for many needs such as cooking, eating, sleeping and other social activities. The Leaf screen seeks to enhance this way of living, easily separating this multi-functional space according to individual needs as well as adding privacy. The wooden structure frames a geometric pattern of hand sewn diamond shaped “leaves” salvaged from leftovers from the local textile company Summer Wood’s other productions. AND ACROSS THE AREA…among dozens of exhibits: TRIPLE MAJOR-FIVE YEAR RETROSPECTIVE Triple-Major’s concept store in Beijing incorporates impressions of traditional Chinese medicinal shop in its interior features and exterior arrangements. The store's visual--designed by S-H-A-N studio, was awarded the Tokyo TDC's Award for Visual Identities in 2010. The Retrospective showcases its past creative works across different creative arenas, ranging from fashion, product to spatial design. As the highlight of the retrospective, Triple-Major invites five of its previous collaborators to launch a new collection of products based on traditional Chinese medicine themes. PAPER MANIFESTOES Paper Manifestoes is curated by WAI Think Tank and Geisel Cabrera to present independent and alternative publications dealing with space. These printed works oscillate from the abstract domain of the virtual world, to the physical concreteness of architecture, moving from the micro scale of domestic containment to the greater scope of urbanism. The exhibition will be accompanied with workshops about self-publishing, talks and discussions with the editors of alternative magazines and artist books. THE LONG PROJECT BY URBANUS AND VANKE Group Located at Zhonglongquan Village, northwest of Ruicheng County, Yuncheng, Shanxi Province, the Guangrenwang Temple, also called as the Five-Dragons Temple, is one of the only four remained wooden structures built in the Tang Dynasty in China, However, the surrounding environment deserves a facelift and spiritual up-lifting. A design team led by URBANUS participates in the design and research, and realization of the whole project would rely on the on-going "LONG PLAN", a public-benefit crowdfunding project to call for public awareness and support on this cultural heritage preservation. How to engage a national treasure into the contemporary life, and what is the "LONG PLAN", this exhibition will explain more. THE NURTURING HOUSE In this urban age, how can we be healthy and happy in our cities? And how should we nurture our cities, with clean air, water, energy, food, and more, so they can nurture us? The Nurturing House showcases stories and projects in sustainable urbanism from the Netherlands and China in a unique setting, shows beautiful objects, and presents amazing solutions, with a specially designed café, with support from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands Participants include: AIM; Beijing University of Technology; Boon Edam; China Building Center; Dashilar Platform; Delft University of Technology; Droog Design; DSM; Studio EVADELAAT x Carola Design; Kuiper Compagnons; LAVA; MARS Architects; MLA+; MORE Architecture; MVRDV; NEXT Architects; Niek Roozen bv.; NL Architects; OMA; Pauline Van Dongen; Studio Henny van Nistelrooy; UN Studio; UNIform & U.D.L.R; VenhoevenCS; West8 among others. BAITASI REMADE – snapshots FIND MORE ON BJDW.ORG AND BTS.MOUJITI.COM BAITASI SERVICE HUBS: a distributive ecology for co-creation and Community Making

BAITASI INFO HUB: exhibition design by People’s Architecture Office takes over a former publishing house office building with a piping systems that blurs indoor and outdoor spaces, comprising a large scale facade installation playing out as a new landmark for Baitasi. The space is intended as a house of convergences for both intellectual and social exchange to foster generative processes of research and usership informed by site-specific knowledge and locational culture. Research projects, the AA Visiting School and a special Making HUB are hosted here for 2 weeks of ongoing knowledge making and sharing. Split Courtyard House by Hua Li (Trace Architecture Office) In traditional courtyard house (Siheyuan), the courtyard is the center of the house and all rooms face the yard. This spatial layout responds to traditional family living, and is no longer suited to today’s young, individual lifestyles. The core need of individual living is privacy. "Split Courtyard House" divides the site of the Siheyuan into four seperate sets of spaces, each with a room and a small private yard. Each set faces a different orientation, forming a pinwheel configuration. In such way, privacy for each room and yard is ensured. In contrast to a traditional courtyard house, this house is named Split Courtyard House (Sifenyuan 四分院). In Chinese, the change from 合 (unity) to 分 (split) suggests the transformation of social structures and lifestyles in the house. AA Visiting School 2015 Beijing - Su(pe)rReal 2.0 The Beijing Visiting School aims to establish a network platform for cross-disciplinary experiment on data-based design ideas and methodologies. The essential objective is to re-discover the capital’s last valuable low-rise Hutong neighborhoods, through the systematic design methodology of big data in multiple dimensions, e.g. spatial, economic, social and ecological. Based on the findings of this research, the School will then initiate a number of design possibilities for a denser and better Baitasi. There will be three stages during the Visiting School, i.e. the Pre-school self-learning, the Pre-school Virtual Research Studio, and the Design Experimentation. A one week lectures series also complements the program. Supercounter by BaO Architects The Supercounter is a public furniture installation realized on the narrow street leading to the Lu Xun Museum. 150 metres of long winding furniture will make its way between the century old trees boarding the hutong and enable informal gatherings, and the street's appropriation and activation, and collectively improvised events. The windy furniture will be implemented and presented in its uninhibited form during BJDW and dismantled afterwards into a series of modules that will be spread in different chosen locations all across the district. Virtual BTS by Moujiti Studio, CAFA and Pi Design Institute (Peking University) Virtuality here is referring to things that are immaterial, intangible within the thinking of materialism, like memories, imagination, culture, experiences, stories, smells, feelings, currents of energies, fluctuations of demands and services, surges of phenomena, data…etc. “Hutong Smell” opens up sensory experience of the area for us. community projects like “Mini Acre” and “To Line Store” are like an Uber of community services, “Mini Acre” ’s small veggie plantation in one’s own home not only allows the community members to fulfil a self sustained life style, but also, together with “To Line Store”, make it possible for people to reduce food waste, recycling, logistics and relevant economic burdens. Data Alley by LAVA Design Agency (Beijing) Responding to the possibility of BTS area to be open to young professionals to live in, Lava created an overview of the district by collecting relevant data from demographics to history, from culinary to literature and visualized it in a brand new infographic project to share with the public and potential newcomers. The project includes also a special publication featuring black and white photos by Eric Gregory Powell who spent 3 days and nights in the area to portray it in its ordinary nature. BAITASI MAKING HUB: this explores the potential ramifications of a technology-augmented course of revival to take place in and service the area, via the establishment of an innovation platform equipped with open-source digital and fabrication tools. Operated by Beijing based Moujiti studio and Interactive Beijing in partnership with Seeed Studio from Shenzhen, this service hub offers a composite series of programs under the working title Our Community which comprises smart products exhibits, workshops, a hackathon, mentorship camps and a conference. DRINK’N HOPe - Program for BTS Community Retirees & Health Community Workers Health Care at BAITASI This Community clinic project consist of a free clinic, designed by Geraldine Lo, where retired and community workers will have free medical consultation with TCM doctors and free Chinese medicine. The program will be supported by the Drink’n HOPe fundraising bar hop across the city. Organized by Moujiti. SLO-MO Food & Craft Show Slo-Mo “Food & Craft Fair” is intended to promote the essential concept of “Slow Life”, in opposition to the idea of ”Ready to consume”. SLO-MO craft fair held outdoors for 4 days (September 24-27).and SLO-MO food fair will feature special-designed booths will host some of the best restaurants and food artisans in town. BAITASI READING HUB: housed in Vector Architect’s Hybrid Courtyard architecture case study, it features the Second-hand Books' Plan by CAFA students’ Studio 6. ‘’Second-hand books must go through an exchange transaction process, not just exist in a personal collection. Books that have just been read many times cannot be called used books. Second-hand books wait for a wider audience, an audience with the potential for creative practice. When we look at second-hand books, we can find traces of temporality and property that, other than the book's reading function, are both enhanced and enlarged. Here, graphic design exists beyond the designer's temporal life and practice. The project questions the practice of graphic design. JIANZI BOX: A VESSEL OF 15000 ACTIVATORS OF PUBLIC SPACE: by SPARK Architects “Jianzi” - a traditional game played since the Han dynasty (206 BC–220 AD), the Jianzi Box is a large scale installation reclaiming an unused small plaza in the area integrating night glowing components, a public reading room with shelving and seating – the installation, gradually deconstructed by visitors taking the Jianzi away, will remain to the use of the residents as a public resting area.

INDIGO DESIGNED TO DELIGHT – snapshots FIND OUT MORE ON BJDW.ORG “Symphony of Blues” installation by studio O “Symphony of Blues” has been designed by local Beijing Architects studio O.. studio O selected 7 different tones of blue, which were then modified through saturation, brightness and hue to form a palette of 88 various blues. By aligning over 400 pieces of fabric, studio O have created an harmonic spatial composition of horizontal and vertical relationships, light and dark; a play of shadows; a dialogue between silence and sound: a spatial choreography to frame and envelop the installations and activities of Beijing Design Week. “Ridiculous Playroom” by Lin Jing Lin Jing has established herself as a designer who likes to have fun. Her catalogue of ceramics, furniture and installation work all feature a playful, humorous twist. In her latest work, The Ridiculous Playroom, Lin takes these themes even further with unusual and often surprising interpretations of familiar objects. Her “Bonsai Table” defies the definition that a table should have just one continuous surface; “Ping & Pong” reinvents the national sport with surprising irregularity. The Ridiculous Table Football concept is a collaboration between Lin Jing, CAFA students Li XinMo, Jin LongQuan, Jin MaLi with Professor Ben Hughes, and Beijing Tiertime Technology (3D printing). “Two Curves in Vibration” Object # CIR-1 by Zhang ZhouJie Zhang ZhouJie has gained a reputation for exploring the philosophy and technique of craft through innovative furniture and accessory design (he also has pieces on display in the Winter Garden). In this installation, Zhang, together with his research partner Chen KunKun, have created a series of objects somewhere between furniture and architecture that explore the mutation of planes and axes in imitation of a natural process of evolution. Everyday Issues (Continued) by CAFA Industrial Design Graduates Following the theme of last year's successful show, Students from the Industrial Design department at The Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) showcase a series of projects that tackle familiar and not-so-familiar problems associated with life in China. The development of each project has been underpinned by thorough research in areas of user experience, technology, materials and processes. As well as this, students have informed their projects by talking to real people about problems experienced in their life and work where design could make a difference. Examples include matchmaking solutions for those pressured into marriage; sleep management proposals for shiftworkers; battery recharge and exchange proposals for China's growing number of electric vehicles and educational tools for volunteer teachers working in remote rural locations. “Variations on Normal” by Dominic Wilcox Dominic Wilcox presents “Variations On Normal” a project which incorporates design thinking into unexpected situations. The work is presented through design work, a short movie, book and prints. “Dominic Wilcox’s drawings aren’t just witty and beautifully drawn, they are serious challenges to the real world to keep looking at itself with innocent eyes, wondering what else is possible.”- Thomas Heatherwick “Porter International Airport” by Porter International This special installation for Beijing Design Week is a collaboration between artist Sean Mackaoui and A4 Studios Beijing: A dream land where Porter bags take centre stage amongst the bland airport environment, and eventually become the stars of the show - travelling the world on their own private jets! As a special promotion, purchases at the airport will be accompanied by a limited edition print (from a series of 4) created by Sean Mackaoui for Porter: “The collages I worked on were to portray the idea of freedom, travel, the world at your feet, bag and ticket in hand, off to discover new horizons.” Porter International is recognized for its ingenious approach to bag design; successfully blending functionality, elegance and fashion with a fastidious attention to detail and using only the highest quality materials. XingXingYu Autism Spatial Design Research An exhibition of proposals for XingXingYu, a non-profit autism educational institute located in Beijing's East 5th Road. reMIX Studio Beijing and A4 Studios present a series of proposals to enhance the teaching environment based on research into teaching for autism best practice around the world. Part of this incorporates ideas developed by the Montessori method of education into specific spatial principles. Others look at how simple tools can be used to improve the experience for teachers, students and parents at the school. Some of these have been created by students from CAFA.

DUBAI GUEST CITY EXHIBITION – WASL DASHILAR Dubai, a young city, seasoned with layers of fast paced urban progression, is the focal point of this year’s Beijing Design Week Guest City Programme. Wasl translates to connection in Arabic and refers to Dubai’s old name. Wasl is presented as sub-chapters that signify the main facets of Dubai and the United Arab Emirates’ identity. These subchapters highlight certain characteristics that the designers often grapple onto, not only to draw inspiration from, but also to preserve their cultural essences. The designers’ areas of interest explore the natural landscapes of the United Arab Emirates, as well as enter the domestic lives of its residents; and expose the responses and statements of the designers to their rapidly shifting metropolis. Wasl is an exhibition that unites established designers as well as emerging ones based in the United Arab Emirates, and together they have put forth pieces that speak of formality as well as experimentation in design. The programme is in partnership with Dubai Design Week, Dubai Design District (d3), Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, Falcon and Associates, as well as art and design institutions Tashkeel, and 1971 – Design Space. Curated by Moza Almatrooshi. For More Information please ask for the Dubai Guest City Booklet, we can provide a digital version with texts and images of all the featured works.
