Mentoring Matters: Q&A with Chuck Davis
"Mentoring is one of the most under-appreciated skills in business today," says Chuck Davis, Venture Partner at Technology Crossover Ventures (TCV) and CEO & Chairman of Prodege. "It's easy to throw out tidbits of advice and try to provide guidance, but few master the delicate art of mentoring the leaders of tomorrow."
Davis should know. A protégé of former NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle, Davis is quick to respond to students and young business leaders who reach out to him. He credits this to his relationship with Rozelle, which began when a 13-year old Davis sent a copy of his new sports magazine, Pro Grid Weekly to the commissioner.
Impressed by Davis' entrepreneurial spirit, Rozelle invited the youngster to NFL headquarters to interview him. Over time, Davis attended 10 NFL Drafts as a guest of the commissioner, who later hired Davis as an intern and wrote his business school recommendation letters. Davis often wonders how his life might have been different if Rozelle hadn't taken an interest in him at such a young age. In this exclusive interview, Davis discusses:
What he learned from Rozelle, and how he applies those lessons to help tomorrow's leadersachieve their full potentialHow coaching sports helped him become a better mentorHow CEOs might go about finding a mentor of their own
TCV: What did Rozelle teach you about business and life, and how has that influenced your approach to mentoring first time and serial CEOs?
Davis: I was very fortunate to have a senior business figure like the Commissioner take an interest in me. It's made me want to give back, and one way I do that is by being an Entrepreneur-in-Residence (EiR) at Harvard, where I meet with over 50 students annually to review their startup business plans. I think it is important that leaders dedicate time to give back because someone paid it forward to us, and now it's our turn.
TCV: You've said time spent coaching your children's soccer teams has made you a better leader and mentor. How so?
Davis: I apply what I've learned on the field to the organizations I lead. I first started coaching and then I became a center referee, which helped me see the players differently. In business, a chairman, like a center referee, typically has certain rights, responsibilities and insights, while a director might approach and see things differently. I try to look at entrepreneurs and companies from all perspectives.
One coaching trick - switching defenders with forwards to achieve better results - is also a way to foster teamwork and make employees more efficient. Switching product and marketing people enables them to understand each other's roles and challenges, so instead of criticizing co-workers, people see what they can do to help each other. I make a point of driving this lesson home at Prodege, parent of Swagbucks, and when mentoring founders. You know that saying about walking in another man's shoes? Well, it's easy to forget what it's like unless you keep doing it.
TCV: There must be a delicate balance between mentoring a founder and coming across as an "over-bearing" investor. Where do you draw that fine line?
