valley’s greatest peculiarity, a beauty that flows with vivid emerald shades, SoËa,

one of the most beautiful European rivers. Simon GregorËiË, one of Slovenia’s

most prominent poets, called it the Clear daughter of the mountains«. The

diverse landscape offers almost unlimited opportunities for cultural and historical

experiences, for sports activities and relaxation. Friendly locals know how to make

their guests feel at home with their excellent local cuisine.

The SoËa Valley is a young and quickly growing tourist destination, the range of offers

and the variety of accommodation options is rising from day to day. Lovers of nature

can choose between the lightness of campsites or the hospitality of tourist farms and

the excellence of their home-made food. In the summer time, hikers are given shelter

TRIGLAV NATIONAL PARK • The Alpine part of the valley area is protected by the Triglav National Park. Mountain trails lead to summits and to numerous natural wonders. The peculiarity of the area are vivid mountain pastures where the famous Tolminc cheese is produced according to a centuries old recipe.

KOZJAK WATERFALL • The picturesque Kozjak waterfall is caught in a stony amphitheatre not far away from Kobarid. It can be reached by an easy walking path by the riverbed of the emerald SoËa River.

NADI±A RIVER • Clear pools and bathing sites of the Nadiæa River invite visitors to refresh themselves in the hot summer days. Locals believe the river has healing powers.

ITALIAN OSSUARY • On the viewpoint above Kobarid, there is an Italian ossuary, built in the post-WWI period, in 1938. 7.014 human remains of fallen Italian soldiers were transferred in the ossuary from surrounding military graveyards.

TOLMIN GORGES • The Tolmin gorges are the lowest and possibly the most beautiful entry-point to the Triglav National Park. A circular path leads through the gorges of the Tolminka and the Zadla≤Ëica rivers. The most prominent attractions are the wedged rock named Bear's Head and the Devil’s Bridge, 60 metres high above the bluish Tolminka River.

THE MEMORIAL CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN JAVORCA • The memorial church of the Holy Spirit in Javorca, the most beautiful monument of WWI in the area of the SoËa front, was built by Austro-Hungarian soldiers during the war and dedicated to their fellow combatants, fallen on the surrounding hills. The church is one of the three Slovenian monuments placed on the list of European Heritage Sites.

LIME TREE IN THE RUT VILLAGE • The village Rut above the valley Ba≤ka grapa is one of the few truly beautiful mountain villages, sunbathed on the terraces above the valleys of the rivers SoËa, Idrijca and BaËa. It is distinguished by another particular ornament Ž one of the mightiest trees in the country, an old lime tree with a circumference of more than 8 metres.

MARY’S CHURCH IN PONIKVE • One of the last works of Joæe PleËnik, Slovenia’s greatest architect. An inventive reconstruction of the Church of St. Mary’s Call burned down by German soldiers during the II. world war. It stands on the remote and quiet plateau ≥entvi≤ka planota.

• The Cultural and historical trail of Most na SoËi (∏ez Most po modrost) narrates the archaeological and cultural history of the Most na SoËi.

• The Old border trail runs through the fortresses of the former Rapallo border between Italy and Yugoslavia, along panoramic ridges and summits around the Podbrdo town in the Valley Ba≤ka grapa.

• The Walk of peace connects monuments and the remains of WWI, there are outdoor museums on six viewpoint locations.

MUSEUMS • The Kobarid Museum tells the story about WWI; the Tolmin Museum presents the entire heritage of the SoËa Valley. In its museum, the Mlekarna Planika dairy presents the interesting tradition of cheese-making, while the Arheological museum Most na Soči provides insights into the region’s archaeological history. There are many smaller and private museum collections in the valley, and doors of the birth houses of important local residents are open to visitors. PR≥JAK WATERFALL • The valley of the Trebu≤Ëica River hides many wild gorges and magnificent waterfalls. The beautiful Pr≤jak waterfall is one of the easiest to access. The brook is also very popular among canyoning enthusiasts.

A paradise for active holidays

HIKING • Walking through numerous trails in the valley hikers can see waterfalls, gorges, springs, lakes and other sites. There are many circular and thematic trails that familiarise visitors with the heritage of the area. The SoËa Valley is an excellent starting-point for more demanding mountain trails; numerous mountain huts offer refreshments, shelter or overnight accommodation. Important long distance trails lead through the valley and on the summits above it: the Slovene Mountain Path, Via Alpina, the E7 European long distance path and the Alpe Adria Trail.

PARAGLIDING AND HANG GLIDING • Due to favourable thermal conditions and exceptionally majestic viewpoints, the SoËa Valley is considered as one of the most popular paragliding and hang gliding destinations in the world. The most famous takeoffs in the Valley are on the Kobala Mountain and on Stol Mountain which are also the platforms for numerous national and international competitions.Experienced tandem pilots can offer at least a fragment of the flying experience to any visitor who is brave enough.

WATER SPORTS • With its rapids the emerald SoËa River attracts each year enthusiasts of water sports from all over the world. They can go rafting, kayaking, and hydro speeding or take on other sporting adventures accompanied by guides from numerous local sports agencies, for solo navigation, however, they will need a permit. The popular canyoning enables visitors to experience picturesque gorges, waterfalls and pools. In the summer time, seductive river pools are a refreshing option for all visitors. The most popular river to bathe in is Nadiæa.

CLIMBING AND CAVING • There are several easy accessible climbing areas through the entire valley. Climbing routes of medium difficulty predominate, the hardest of which is currently rated as 8a. Climbers can look for their own challenges on the high walls in the Julian Alps (some as high as 1000 metres).Many deep caves hide under the Karstic mountain area; however, they are all very demanding and suitable only for experienced cavers.

CYCLING • The diverse landscape offers unlimited opportunities for cycling. Less trafficked roads in the valley are suitable for lighter cycling tours, while ascents and descents on numerous mountain roads, paths and car tracks provide for a more adrenaline experience. Cycling paths are not marked; however, they are described in detail on maps and guides.

FISHING • The SoËa Valley is a paradise for fly-fishing Ž which is the only permitted fishing method. The Angling club of Tolmin manages 145 km of fishing waters, and it is possible to fish in eight rivers with only one permit. With the exception of SoËa, where navigation is permitted, all other rivers are reserved only for fishing. Among fish species, grayling and the famous SoËa trout are the most important (salmo marmoratus).

• Water activities on the SoËa river and the Koritnica stream are only permitted between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. from 15th March to 31st October.• It is strongly recommended that visitors are accompanied by experienced and qualified local guides. All such activities are undertaken at one's own risk. Access to the river is only

allowed at specially marked places. To use the above mentioned places to enter or exit the river it is necessary to have a permit. Camping is only permitted in the designated campsites. Any breach of regulation is liable to a fine in accordance with the Municipal Order.

KOBARID, which is situated at the foot of the Alps, is a renowned historical

town, most known for events during WWI. Restaurants in the town and around

it, joined in the Kobarid gastronomic circle, are famous among worshippers of

good food. A gorgeous natural environment and experienced sports guides offer

unlimited opportunities for all types of activities in nature.

More than 1,600 visitors can be currently accommodated in the Kobarid area.

Almost half of them in camps by the clear SoËa and Nadiæa rivers, 200 beds

are made available by hotel and guesthouses, 500 beds are available in private

rooms, apartments and tourist farms, and more than 300 beds in mountain huts

and youth hostels.

milk processing is displayed in the cheese museum “From the mountain pasture

to the Planika dairy”. The museum’s historical and ethnological collection and film present the heritage of mountain grazing, mountain pastures, the development of the cheese trade and cheese processing in the Mlekarna Planika dairy which is based on the Soča Valley area cheese-

making tradition. The centrepiece of the collection is represented by the

reconstruction of a mountain house with all its relative equipment for processing milk

into cheese. In the museum gift shop you can purchase artisanal products and all products

The rich cultural heritage of the Upper Soča Region is on display in the Tolmin Museum, which is in the Coronini Mansion in the centre of Tolmin. The exhibition presents exceptional artefacts that had been buried for thousands of years - particularly those found in Most na Soči, which testify to the Iron Age Sveta Lucija culture. This region is known for its architecture and ethnological traditions, its traditional farming practice on mountain pastures and its cheese-making tradition. A focus is placed on the large and bloody Tolmin Peasants’ Revolt of 1713, which was the largest rebel uprising of farmers in the Primorska Region and the last major peasant revolt in Slovenia.

ACTIVITY: The Kobarid Dialysis Centre with professional healthcare, is equipped with 14 dialysis machines Fresenius 4008 S. Dialyses take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in the morning.LOCATION: centre of Kobarid
