A hiking trail of three countries: Austria, Slovenia and Italy – and three cultures.

This long distance hiking trail leads from the foot of the highest mountain in Austria, the Grossglockner, through the

most beautiful mountain and lake regions in Carinthia and without any major detours,

leads close to the point where the three countries of Austria, Italy and Slovenia intersect at the Dreiländereck, and then

on through Slovenia in Soča Valley towards Trieste and the Adriatic.

1.  OPENING OF THE HIKING FESTIVAL, “Along the Red Trail of the Via Alpina from Monte Carlo to Trieste”, Igor Gruber, Friday, September 16, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. in the Zelena hiša (Green House) – TIC Kobarid. One mountaineer, 107 days, 2,640 km, 140 km of ascent, 5 pairs of shoes, and 12,000 photos. Last summer, Igor Gruber managed to realize his dream: he walked the whole length of the Red Trail of the Via Alpina from Monte Carlo to Trieste. This epic expedition took him across the entire area of the Alps and through eight countries. In 107 days he covered 2,640 km on foot and made an ascent summing up to 140 km. A 14-kilo rucksack was his travel companion and five pairs of shoes. He took more than 12,000 photos. The expedition was continually followed via social networks by more than 10,000 people.

2. Lecture “IN THE SEARCH FOR THE UNKNOWN AT THE END OF THE WORLD – TERRA MAGICA – THE MYSTICAL PATAGONIA«, Boštjan Mikuž, Thursday, September 22, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. in the Zelena hiša (Green House), Trg Svobode 16, Kobarid. The mountaineer of the Primorska region (the Littoral) visited Patagonia twice in the last three years; together with co-mountaineers he climbed two new routes: in November 2013 the route they called ‘Vstala Primorska’ (The Risen Primorska) up to the yet unconquered mountain Cerro Dumbo, and in November 2015 the route they called ‘No Fiesta’ in the yet unconquered Patagonian problem, the mighty eastern face of Cerro San Lorenzo. He will present first-hand experience of his first and second visit to Patagonia in his lecture in a genuine manner, just as it is genuine the Patagonian landscape itself.

3. Lecture of ROMAN BENET, Friday, September 23, 2016 at 8:00 p.m. in the Stergulc house (Stergulčeva hiša) in Bovec. Roman Benet and Nives Meroi from the nearby Trbiž/Tarvisio are perhaps the most popular mountaineering couple in the world. They climbed together numerous difficult routes, and they inscribed themselves among the great names of world mountaineering mainly thanks to their plain alpine ascents without the use of oxygen, fixed ropes or porters’ support up to 12 (of 14 altogether) Himalayan eight-thousanders. They are representatives of classical mountaineering ethical code, far away from the media and out of the limelight. They will share with us their impressions from the amazing story they are still elaborating.

4. CLIMBING A MOUNTAIN THROUGH A MOVIE – an evening of mountaineering film in the Kinogledališče of Tolmin.

Friday, September 23, 2016 at 8:00 p.m., entrance fee €3:• KAYAKING THE ALEUTIANS (2015). Two women attempt a world first paddle along the remote and stormy Aleutian island chain. In the goose-bumps adventure the two friends are approached by bears, swept away from land by unknown currents, unfavourable winds and pounded by rough seas. Alone for 101 days, they gain a rare insight into themselves, the rich wildlife and the lives of the few people who live in this harsh yet beautiful landscape. • K2 AND THE INVISIBLE FOOTMEN (2015). Iara Lee offers an insight into the lives of the indigenous porters of Gilgit/Baltistan in Pakistan. These heroes of mountaineering make possible the ascent of K2, the second highest mountain in the world. The film depicts the courage and everyday sacrifices of these unacknowledged porters. It also provides a fresh look into Pakistan, a country typically portrayed in the foreign media as being merely a land of conflict.

The traverse of the massive Fitz Roy is one of the most desired goals in modern alpinism: the exhausting expedition that took the fearless pair in 4,000 vertical metres of climbing across seven glorious summits. But nobody could have imagined that the traverse could be such a fun. Join Tommy Caldwell and Alex Honnold in their inspiring – and at times really funny – adventure that brought them the Golden Ice-Pick.

• PANORAMA (2015) (awarded at the 10th Festival Gorniškega Filma). In July 2014, Edu Marin took up one of the biggest challenges of his

life: together with his 62-year-old father Francisco ‘Novato’ Marin he aimed to climb the ‘Panorama’, the legendary route in the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. This 500-metre-long route has a Class 8C rating and is one of the most difficult rock faces in the world. Father and son went to the heart of the Italian Dolomites and joined forces to overcome the challenge and thus secure for themselves a place among the world legends of climbing. 

• L’UOMO DELLE TRE CIME (THE MAN OF THE THREE CIME) – CHRISTOPH HAINZ (2014). Watch the first free solo ascent of the steep northern face of the Cima Grande. In no more than 48 minutes Christoph Hainz climbed the distance from the foot of the face to the summit of the mighty mountain. An attractive movie was shot about this amazing feat. Amidst the shots of Hainz’s climbing are inserted talks with his friends and co-climbers who present their view of the great man and alpinist.

5. Lecture “FORTY YEARS IN THE COMPANY OF MOUNTAIN FACES AND SUMMITS”, Peter Podgornik, Tuesday, Septem ber 27, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. in the Stergulc house (Stergulčeva hiša) in Bovec. Peter Podgornik received the 2016 award of the Alpine Association of Slovenia for his life work in the field of mountaineering. Together with his brother Pavle he was the promoter of the new prosperity of modern mountaineering in the Primorska region. He belongs to the leading Slovenian alpine climbers of the past thirty years: first through his extraordinary series of difficult ascents in a number of mountain regions of the world, and presently through his managing of the portal www.primorskestene.com. We shall go together with Peter to dramatic mountain faces and wonderful summits of his full life.
