Friday January 15, 2016

Daar is nog ‘n versamelpunt by Pick ‘n Pay in die Eden Square inkopiesentrum opgemerk.

SUFFERING: Wild and domes c animals are suff ering due to the lack of grazing, worsened by the extreme heat and lack of rain

The Phalaborwa SPCA reports an alarming increase of animals being treated for heat stroke and starvation.

These animals are not limited to live stock and wildlife, but include domestic animals. The SPCA has had to assist a number of locals to humanely destroy animals as this is a better option as opposed to leaving the animals to suffer.

According to Kerry-Lynne Gerber, inspector at the SPCA, some owners have been responsible and have tried to supplement feed for their animals, but more alarmingly, they have also found people that just left their animals to fend for themselves.

“There is just no more grazing available to these poor animals and this is leading to

great suffering on the animal’s part” Gerber said.

The Phalaborwa SPCA has gone as far as Hoedspruit to try and assist people with the effects of the drought. Animals are dehydrating much quicker than what they can replenish with fl uids.

Phalaborwa SPCA asks all members of the public to please assist were they can whether it is with domestic animals or wildlife. “They all need our help at this time. You can help by fi lling a bird bath/container for the birds and insects” says Gerber. Residents can also help by animals in need of assistance to the SPCA. Gerber concludes: “We can all make a difference, if we work together for the good of animals everywhere.”

Animals also sufferdue to heatwave

Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality spokesperson, Jonas Maheso says the Municipality is delighted to announce that the new Audit Committee is hard at work to improve Council’s fi nances.

The committee is made up of Chairperson Mr Ravhubzulo Khathutshelo Percy, Mrs Mbonambi Khulekwe Glynnis and Mrs Mangoma Princess Avheani Sindi.

Exco members, Cllr Ishamel Mpenyane,

Cllr Khashane Malatji, Cllr Alinah Peta and Cllr Thompson Nkuna. Veteran Mpac Chairperson, Cllr Omega Makwala is also part of the committee.

Unconfi rmed reports suggest that the Municipality received a qualifi ed opinion from the Auditor General for 2014/2015 fi nancial year, but more on this issue will follow in the next edition.

NEW AUDIT COMMITTEE: Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality’s new Audit Commi ee seems to gearing in the right direc on as reports suggest that the Municipality received a qualifi ed audit opinion from the Auditor General for the 2014/2015 fi nancial year.

PHALABORWA HERALD Friday January 15, 2016 3COMMUNITY

The 11th annual Limpopo Marula Festival keeps on playing an instrumental role in the economic spin offs of the town as unemployed rural women are currently responding to government’s calls for communities to be the catalysts of change they need in their areas. Doris Seemela from Mahune section at Makhushane says she has been collecting Marula Fruits since the festival was established. Her colleague, Maria Seemela from Nkweshe section at Mashishimale reckons the little profi t made is just enough to put food on the table for their families. Linah Matlou from Benfarm section C is pleading with the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality and provincial department of Local Economic Development, Environment and Tourism to build them a house to be used as a depot. “We started collecting the fruits last week Sunday and camped here a day after. An 80kg bag amounts to R42, 50kg R43 while 25kg R14. We mostly fi ll 50kg’s and the Amarula Factory truck so far came once last Friday and it is expected to return on Wednesday. Previously, it used to come

here twice a week, but this year due to lack of rain it might come once a week for the duration of the Marula season as the trees didn’t produce many fruit like in the past,” explained Seemela. Matlou says since they camped last week Monday, police are often harassing them while a municipal offi cial on Friday also came and threatened to remove them if they don’t pay a fi ne claiming that they were littering and that they were forced to sleep next to the Post Offi ce when it was raining at night. “We are still shocked that our Municipality is expecting us to pay a R318,00 fi ne while knowing that we are poor and won’t have that kind of money. The sad part is that we never littered while the area where we are operating is neat, but few metres away from it there is a huge uncut Municipal park,” remarked Shayi. Phalaborwa Herald visited the area where the women are currently camped just on the edge of a municipal park and King Fisher Private School and didn’t notice any type of littering except for the huge unmaintained Municipal grassland.

MARULA FRUITS: Linah Matlou from Benfarm Sec on C, Doris Seemela from Mahune Sec on at Makhushane and Maria Shayi from Nkweshe Sec on at Mashishimale in front on their Marula fruits wai ng for an Amarula Truck to pick them up on Wednesday.

MIGHT BE PROSECUTED: Doris Seemela from Mahune Sec on at Makhushane, Maria Shayi from Nkweshe Sec on at Mashishimale, Linah Matlou from Benfarm Sec on C and their crew are facing a possible prosecu on from the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality provided they fail to pay a R318,00 li ering fi ne.

“Hierdie jong mense is waarlik voorbeeldige Suid-Afrikaners.

“Of hulle nou begin werk, aan ‘n tersiêre instelling gaan studeer of ‘n gapings jaar

neem.

The 2016 National Certifi cate Supplementary Examination is scheduled to be written from Wednesday, February 10 to Thursday, March 18 this year.

According to the provincial education department spokesperson, Dr Naledzani Rasila, writing starts with Computer Application which will be written in the morning.

He said Music Comprehension and Mechanical Technology will be written on the last day. “Marking is expected to be done during the coming holidays. It is anticipated that learners will receive the results on April, 29,” said Rasila.

He added that the department is receiving many calls of learners who could not apply for further learning during 2015 who now are desperate to get to colleges but do not know if such institutions are authorised to offer such services.

“The department urges all learners intending to apply in institutions of higher learning to start by verifying status of such institutions.

KYOUKOSHIN KAI - Back row from le to right: Reneilwe Raan Thete, Pule Thete and Phemelo Thete. Front row from le to right: Lesedi Thete, Junior Thete and Dakalo Mulisha during their grading conducted by the legendary Sensei Reuben Makhura at Phosphate Hall on 12 December 2015.

Foskor Community Centre (Phosphate Hall) played host to the Mopani Kyu grading conducted by the legendary South African Branch Chief Kyoukushin KAI-Kan Karate on 12 December 2015.

On the day, 13 practitioners from different age groups were graded.

Two from Tzaneen were graded for 6th and 4th Kyu while one from Seshego was graded for 7th Kyu. Phalaborwa had the most practitioners with ten.

Popular Phalaborwa based Magistrate, Advocate Tobsy Thete’s children; Pule Thete, Lesedi Thete, Junior Thete, Reneilwe Thete and Phemelo Thete were all graded for 10th Kyu. Their colleagues, Eva Mashele, and Lerutla Godfrey Modipa were also graded for 10th Kyu while Pearl Tsotetsi received 6th Kyu, Lion King Sampson promoted to 9th Kyu and Ginito Langa going home with 4th Kyu. Namakgale branch chairperson, Sempai Vincent Mashile says Sensei Makhura promoted Samson due to his high level of discipline, dedication and commitment to the branch.

“Samson’s tireless efforts couldn’t go unnoticed as he has always been there for his colleagues and despite being a senior member, he always puts in a lot of energy and resilience in the morning and evening sessions and overall general activities of the club. We are certain that the younger members and potential ones will pick up some traits from him,” remarked Mashile.

The club is eternally grateful for Advocate Thete for having provided lunch for all participants and quests during the grading. Samson as the club’s deputy chairperson says the club was invited for the Mopani District Sports Confederations meetings held at the Greater Tzaneen Municipal Council Chamber on 7 January 2016.

“One of the issues raised was that all karate categories need to unite under the umbrella of Kyoukushin to enable the district to channel funds to a uniform federation as opposed to the current different structures.

It was also agreed that a Mopani Regional Karate federation needs to be established as a matter of urgency and all schools and Municipalities are requested to start recruiting new members in a bid to save young people from falling prey to alcohol and drug abuse,” explained Samson.

For those wishing to join the club; training is on Mondays to Thursdays from 18:00 to 20:00. Mashile can be contacted at 079 026 3745 and Samson at 073 473 0955.
