Social media—it means a lot of things to different people. For others, it

that network marketing was the “original” social media. People have always
networked with people, interacting, educating, sharing, recommending,
and so forth. Network marketing has always been primarily a human-to-
human, face-to-face interaction. This personal aspect is still crucial in network

A Basic Explanation of Social MediaSo, what is social media? First of all, the term
“media” refers to an instrument of communication.
Consequently, the newspaper and radio are
traditional forms of media. The thing is, traditional
media communicate information only in a one-way
format, with information flowing from the media to
the consumer.
Social media, on the other hand, is considered
an instrument of communication because there is
definitely a flow of information. But social media
differs in one key way from traditional media.
Instead of the media source being the only entity
creating, controlling and disseminating content,
social media is more the “hub” of interaction
between many creators of content and consumers
alike. Not only is information passed back and forth,
but there are other levels of interaction as well,
including commenting, discussion, and commerce.
In simple terms, social media is a multi-laned
avenue with various junctions and avenues that
gives you the ability to communicate, socialize
and interact in ways that were virtually unheard of
just twenty years ago.

Where Should You Start?If you’re already using social media, you likely know that there are literally
dozens of social media applications available today. But what if you’re
not using social media? Many people who aren’t on social media feel
overwhelmed by suggesting that they somehow have to be an expert user
for each of these.
But this is simply not the case. You don’t need to become an expert at all
of these. Instead, we suggest you become adept at using one social media
application, particularly one that is very popular and well-established in
today’s internet community. As of this writing, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,
and Pinterest are some of the most popular. Facebook would be our choice
(and it’s what we’ll most refer to in this training guide.)

Now that you see how social media is constructed and how it operates, it’s
not hard to see that in many ways, network marketing was the original social
media. Network marketing has long served as a viable model for people to
build a business by connecting with, educating, supporting, training and
inspiring others in a personal way. To be clear it was (and still should be!)
carried out on the phone, using “snail mail”, or face-to-face over coffee at
the local bookstore. But it’s helpful to see how the underlying principles that
have driven network marketing for so long also are what make social media
