Definition An artistic movement, expressed in the visual and other realist arts, which depicts social and racial injustice, economic hardship, through unvarnished pictures of life's struggles; often depicting working class activities as heroic.

Why It Matters

Authors and Artists developed this movement in the 30s. Realistically portrayed the difficulties of the times, and helped the rest of the world "visualize" the struggles.
