The 2007 June Anderson Almquist Award for Distinguished Service to Journalism will be presented to Alan Boyle at MSNBC.com. Boyle has spent nearly 30 years in the world of journalism in Cincinnati, Spokane and Seattle. As MSNBC.com’s science editor, he over-sees coverage of the physical sciences and space exploration, in addition to areas such as paleontology and archaeology. Since joining MSNBC.com in 1996, Boyle has won awards from the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the National Association of Science Writers, the Pirelli Relativity Challenge and the CMU Cybersecurity Journal-ism Awards program. He is president of the Northwest Science Writers Association, a contributor to “A Field Guide for Science Writers,” the blogger behind Cosmic Log and an occasional on-camera source on the MSNBC cable channel. Boyle also has served as president of the Western Washington Pro Chapter of SPJ.

About June Anderson AlmquistIn the late 1960s, the SPJ Western Washington Chapter established two awards: “Courage in Journalism,” an award presented at the discretion of the chapter to a news organiza-tion rather than an individual, and “Service to Journalism,” an award given to an individual for a special contribution toward the betterment of journalism within Washington state. They were later combined into one under the moniker of the “Distinguished Service to Journalism Award.” The board renamed the award the “June Anderson Almquist Award for Distinguished Service to Journalism,” following her death in 2000. Almquist had a long career as a reporter, columnist and editor at the Seattle Times, concluding as an assistant managing editor. She also was a trailblazer in SPJ. Almquist was the Western Washington chapter’s first woman president and received the Distinguished Service to Journalism Award in 1976. She was a leader in SPJ regionally and nationally. In 1998, she received the society’s highest award for meritorious service, the Wells Key.

The 2007 Susan Hutchison Bosch Award will be presented to local radio legend Bill Wippel. Bill Wippel has been active in radio journalism since 1950. He’s worked at stations in Seattle, Tacoma, Spokane, Pullman, Yakima, Ellensburg, Lewiston, Minneapolis and Green Bay. He served as news director at KIRO radio in Seattle in the late 1970s, hiring both talk show host Dave Ross and reporter Tim Haeck, both of whom still work there!

Bill now has his own company, doing public relations and radio promotions, spots and sta-tion breaks for six radio stations in Central and Eastern Washington. In 2006, Bill testified at the Federal Communications Commission’s media ownership hearings, stating that: “It is a shame the broadcasting conglomerates with all their profits are not helping more public service organizations. With digital radio, non-profits should at least be allowed ac-cess to the new radio channels, if not the primary frequency. It appears the public service is last on most broadcasters’ agendas.”

Bill is quite active in the non-profit world. He currently serves as executive director of Tape Ministries Northwest, a lending library for the blind and disabled in 48 states and Canada. Bill also broadcasts for the blind on the Evergreen Radio Reading Service, a part of the Washington Talking Book and Braille Library. He’s also done public relations and outreach work for the Union Gospel Mission, the Compass Center and New Hope Child & Family Agency.

About susAn hutchison boschSusan Hutchison Bosch was an environmental affairs reporter for the Seattle P-I until December 1970. She contracted lymph cancer at the age of 18 while a student at the University of Washington and died of Hodgkin’s disease at the age of 25 in 1971. Follow-ing her death the SPJ Western Washington Chapter created an award in her honor. That board said Susan Hutchison Bosch “personified intellectual honesty, deep understanding of people and their problems, abiding fairness, grace, perseverance and quiet courage. Though afflicted with Hodgkin’s disease, she rejected despair and chose to live a fully committed life.” The award is presented by the board only when the recipient is judged uniquely qualified and whose work represents the qualities Bosch defined in life.
