Johannes Brahms1833-1897

Academic Festival Overture

Franz Schubert1797 – 1828Symphony No. 8 (Unfinished)

Carl Stamitz 1745-1801 Concerto for Clarinet

The two movements comprising the “Unfinished” Symphony were completed about the time Schubert contracted an illness that lead to his early death. Despite only thirty-one years of life, he wrote over one thousand works. The Symphony was first performed thirty-seven years later, in 1865, after the composer’s death, by the Vienna Musikverein.

A partial manuscript to a third movement exists, but the facts around the composer’s intentions for a full-length symphony are disputed. The winds bring in the principal theme, which is woven throughout the first movement. The second movement begins as a graceful whisper with a clarinet solo entrance hinting towards the happy sweetness not lasting long. After a reprise, a stormy development commences, finally resolving into the ethereal sounds heard at the beginning of the movement.

Carl Stamitz was born in 1746 in Mannheim. He is known as the founder of the clarinet concerto because he was the first to recognize the soloistic potential of the clarinet, as well as its range of color. He also established its role in the orchestra.

The Clainet Concerto No. 3 was likely written around 1785, which was the same year that he was appointed the principal violin of the Duc de Noailles in Paris. The style of this concerto reflects the usual orchestration found in the mid-eighteenth century, where most of the important musical material was given to the strings, while the winds filled in the harmony. Carl Stamitz’s style is pleasant and free-flowing as nicely illustrated in this concerto.

Although not an academic himself, Johannes Brahms received a number of honors from academic institutions. The German university in Breslau offered Brahms a Doctorate in Music, he sent his thanks–on a postcard. After Berhard Scholz, a longtime friend, suggested that a musical response would be a more appropriate form of thanks, Brahms responded with the Academic Festival Overture - a depiction of student experiences, from parties to academics, through a masterful potpourri of student songs and other popular melodies.

The overture begins with a mysterious atmosphere building to the first of the student songs presented majestically as a German chorale. As the music builds, the winds sing the praises of beauty, “Wir hatten gebaut ein stättliche Haus” (We had built a stately home).

The principal theme returns with the full orchestra leading to the second student song introduced by the second violins “Der Landesvater” (The father of our country). The “Fox Song”–“Was kommt dort von der Höh,” (a song ridiculing freshmen raw from the provinces), appears first on the bassoons, the full orchestra joining in the fun. Following a recapitulation, the piece concludes with a triumphant rendition of “Gaudeamus igitur” (While we are young, let us rejoice).

Alania Peters, Clarinet SoloistAlaina Peters, a senior at Black Hills High School, has been a member of the SOGO Conservatory Orchestra for three years. Actively involved in her school’s music program, she plays clarinet in the symphonic band and pit orchestras, plays tenor saxophone in the jazz band and jazz combo, and is a drum major for the marching band. She has been studying privately with Jeff Brooks and Ashley Cook since eighth grade, and now teaches young students of her own. Her most exciting accom-plishments include a Superior rating at the State Solo Contest, winning the Masterworks Choral Ensemble Youth Music Contest, and receiving a standing ovation for performing Artie Shaw’s “Concerto for Clarinet.” She is also proud of tran-scribing her entire concerto from a recording by Sabine Meyer, and hopes the audience enjoys her original cadenzas. Alaina plans to major in music education at a large, public, out-of-state university next year.

A self-described “nerd”, Alaina has re-ceived nearly straight A’s throughout high school. She received an American Association of University Women Cer-tificate of Excellence for Mathematics last year and is a National Merit Semifinalist. Outside of school, she enjoys attending the youth groups at Westwood Baptist Church and Hope Community Church (often show-ing up at Hope 45-minutes late after SOGO rehearsal!), being a 3rd-4thgrade leader at Westwood’s AWANA club, and goofing around with friends. Alain also enjoys sing-ing along with the radio at the top of her lungs, but only when no one is around to hear.
