What is renewable energy?
Question: What is renewable energy?
Renewable energy is becoming increasingly important in a world of fossil
fuel usage.
Alternatives must be explored to avoid continued environmental damage.
4
Types of Renewable Energy1. Wind Energy
Wind Energy
Wind energy is utilised by installing wind turbines where the wind is available in good amounts. In the world, Europe is extremely suitable for using wind energy.
5
Types of Renewable Energy1. Wind Energy
How does it work?
In short, wind energy converts kinetic energy into mechanical energy. As a result, we can use it.
6
Types of Renewable Energy2. Biomass
Biomass Energy
Biomass comprises of the remains or wastes of plants and animals. They can also be used to produce gases or fuels. These forms of matter do not produce carbon dioxide as other gases and fuels would. Biofuels and Biodiesels are two famous products of biomass.
7
Types of Renewable Energy2. Biomass Energy
How does it work?
In short, biomass sources are burned to steam water and runs a generator which produces electricity. As a result, we can use it.
8
Types of Renewable Energy3. Geothermal Energy
Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy is the energy derived from the heat that is emitted below the earth. Some examples are volcanoes and hot springs.
9
Types of Renewable Energy3. Geothermal Energy
How does it work?
Among the available renewable energy resources, geothermal energy is not found everywhere hence it is limited to certain regions.
10
Types of Renewable Energy4. Hydropower Energy
Hydropower Energy:
Hydropower or hydroelectric energy is the energy we get from the current or force of waters. It is majorly used for generating electricity through dams.
11
Types of Renewable Energy4. Hydropower Energy
How does it work?
In short, a turbine converts the kinetic energy of falling water into mechanical energy. Then a generator converts the mechanical energy from the turbine into electrical energy.
12
Types of Renewable Energy5. Solar Energy
Solar Energy:
In simple words, solar energy is the energy you can get from the sun. This is one of the most used forms of renewable energy all around the world. Photovoltaics and solar thermal power are the two most used types.
13
Types of Renewable Energy5. Solar (PV) Energy
How does it work?
In short, a solar panel works by allowing photons, or particles of light, to knock electrons free from atoms, generating a flow of electricity.

Helping the Environment
Taking steps to conserve and reuse is easier than you might think. You can do your
part just by changing your daily habits.
15
Helping the Environment
Switch off anything that uses electricity when not in use.
If you're not using it, turn it off. This goes for lights, televisions, computers,
printers, and so on.
16
Helping the Environment
Unplug devices when possible.
Leaving devices plugged in, such as laptop chargers or toasters, can use "phantom"
energy.
17
Helping the Environment
Conserve water.
The average family of four uses about 400 gallons (1,514 L) of water everyday.
18
Helping the Environment
Recycle all you can.
If you have recycling bins, use it. Be sure to separate your recycling into glass, metal,
paper and so on.
19
Helping the Environment
Avoid using disposable items.
Anything you use only a few times and throw away consumes resources only to
spend centuries in a landfill.

How Can Solar Energy Help the Environment?
Installing 10 Solar Panels result in annual benefits equivalent to:
Planting 184 tree seedlings
Mitigating adverse effect of driving a car for 10,154 km
Reducing CO2 emissions by 2 Tons
or
or
22
How Can Trees Help Your Environment?
Trees combat climate changeIn one year, an acre of mature trees absorbs the amount of CO2 produced when you drive your car ~41,000 km.Trees provide oxygenIn one year an acre of mature trees can provide enough oxygen for 18 people.Trees cool the streets and the cityTrees cool the city by up to 12°C, by shading our homes and streets, breaking up urban “heat islands” and releasing water vapour into the air through their leaves.Trees conserve energyThree trees placed strategically around a single-family home can cut summer air conditioning needs by up to 50%. Trees save waterShade from trees slows water evaporation from thirsty lawns, they increase atmospheric moisture.

Solar Energy
Solar energy is popular in the UAE because:
There is consistent sunlight throughout the year which ensures consistent
power delivery
There is a lot of space for a solar array to be set up, whether on a roof or in
open space
25
Sustainable Energy Is Growth
► Worldwide installed solar capacity is projected to grow reaching:
• 500 GW by 2020• 4,600 GW by 2030
► Dubai aims to produce power by clean and sustainable energy sources:
• 7% by 2020• 25% by 2030• 75% by 2050
Installed solar capacity is growing
exponentially

Electrical Connection
In a parallel circuit, the voltage across each of the components is the same, and the total current is the sum of the currents through each component.
Vtotal = V1, V2, V3, …..etc
Itotal = I1 + I2 + I3 + ….etc

Electrical Connection
In a series circuit, the current through each of the components is the same, and the voltage across the circuit is the sum of the voltages across each component
Vtotal = V1 + V2 + V3 + …..etc
Itotal = I1, I2, I3, ….etc

Sizing your Solar Array
When building a solar array for a client, an imperative consideration is to what scale the solar array will be. This is important so as the client doesn’t have a solar array providing them with surplus power, or worse, insufficient power.
Example: A client is having a consumption of 120,000 kWh per year calculate the total solar system size required to cover 80% of the client consumption.
1. Define the yield as per your area (consider the yield in UAE to be 1,650 kWp/kWh/year)
2. 2- Total kWp = Total consumption / yield= (120,000 kWh/year) / (1,650 kWp/kWh/year)= 72.72 kWp
3. To cover only 80% of the total consumption= 0.8 x 72.72 kWp= 58.2 kWp
