Introduction The American Photon Solar Pool Pump Kit includes everything you need to take the circulation and filtration function of your pool completely off grid eliminating the electrical costs of pool filtration.! The solar pool pump kit is designed for DIY installation for people with electrical, construction and plumbing experience, however, due to the risk of electric shock, we advise that the solar panel installation and connection be completed by or supervised by a licensed electrician. The system is very simple to install and includes four main components. Solar Panels and Racking System, Solar DC Disconnect Box, Solar Pool Pump Controller and the Solar Pool Pump.

_____________________________________________ Solar Panels and Racking System

All American Photon Solar Pool Pumps are designed to use 240W!250W 30V solar panels. Panels are always connected in series. Higher voltage or power (watt) ratings or incorrect combinations of panels can damage the pump and will void the warranty. The pump and panel requirements are as follows:

There are many different solar panel providers on the market and prices for panels can vary widely. While our pumps are designed to leverage panels by several manufacturers, and there are literaly hundreds of choices, it’s important to choose a quality brand with a stable company that will be around to support the 20 year performance guarantee for their panels. There are several racking and mounting systems available for installing the solar panels in a number of confirgurations. Options include top or side of pole, ground mount, roof top mounts and there are several variations for types of roof tops including pitched and flat roof as well as types of roof surfaces including comoposite shingle, tile and metal. Data sheets are available for several mounting options on our website. ______________________________________________ Solar Disconnect Switch

The solar disconnect box is essentially the on / off switch for your solar panels, and allows you to safely cut the power to your pump for maintenance. This works just like a circuit breaker in your AC fuse panel.

The wires from the solar panel array terminate at this box and this box connects directly into the Solar Pool Pump Controller. Depending on the voltage of your system, you will either have a breaker style diconnect (up to 150 VDC) or a pull type fuse (150VDC – 600VDC.)

_____________________________________________ Solar Pool Pump Controller The solar pool pump controller constantly manages the power going into the pump to deliver the maximum power. It does this through maximum power point tracking (MPPT.) Solar panels (photovoltaic cells) have a complex relationship between their operating environment and the power they can produce. By tracking and managing the relationship, the controller delivers the maximum power to the pump by tracking and adjusting to the fluctuations in voltage and current received by the solar panels in real time.

Solar Pump controller box When connecting the solar pool pump controller, it’s necessary to remove the cover to make the wire connections to the main board inside the case. Refer to the diagram on the following page for a description of the connection posts. The controller also supports three sensors. These sensors are optional and are not commonly used for most swimming pool applications. Common applications include infinity edgeless pools or using solar swimming pool pumps for irrigation applictions. The included sensors are as follows:

• Tank Full Shut Off • Low Water Shut Off • Medium Water Level Switch On

In the case that the tank is full, the pump will be powered off. As the water level lowers in the tank and the level reaches the medium sensor the pump will turn back on and continue pumping. Likewise the Low water shut off will occur if the water level drops down to this sensor and the pump will remain off until the water level returns back to the medium water level switch.

______________________________________________ Solar Pool Pump Controller - wiring details!

The wiring for the solar panels, pool pumps and sensors is important. Typically wiring for solar panel wiring, which is also known as PV wiring has a heavy shielding on it to protect it from the constant bombardment of extreme weather conditions. PV wire is commonly 10 AWG wire with shielding. When installing in condiut, the shielding is less of a requirement as the condiut provides the shielding from the weather.

Pump wiring should be connected by heat shrink sleeve connections. Pumps include 10 feet of wire and the guage ranges from 14 AWG to 10 AWG depending on the voltage and size of the pump.

______________________________________________ optional AC/DC POWER supply Autosensing Failover The optional AC / DC Power Supply Auto Sensing Failover device allows solar powered systems to fail over to mains, battery or generator power when the solar power is not available. This device is commonly used for pools that have features such as waterfalls or fountains or infinity edges and clients prefer for these features to continue running after solar power is no longer availalble. They are most commonly used with standard pool timer switches to limit the hours of non!solar power.

The autosensing power supply automatically senses when the solar input is no longer available and switches over to AC power. When solar becomes available again, the device will switch back over to solar power and will stop using AC power.

Common uses of this failover switch include providing power to the pump in the evening for viewing pool features. Other uses include powering the pump to run heat pumps in the early morning before opening commercial pools.

_____________________________________________ Solar Pool Pump The American Photon Solar Pool Pump consists of a brushless DC (Direct Current) motor that is nearly twice as efficient as an AC (Alternating Current) motor, which means the job of filtering with DC power can be achieved with a much smaller motor. A brushless DC motor will generally outlast its AC equivalents life by up to 2 to 3 times.

The solar pool pump simply connects to your pool the same way an ordinary AC pump connects to the pool, with the intake connected to the pipes coming from your pool and the output port connected to the pipe leading to your filter. The DC pump motor connects directly into the Solar Pool Pump Controller.

_____________________________________________ Basic Solar Pump Installation

Installation is straightforward:

1) Locate the pump on solid level ground and make sure it is protected from the weather and pool splash. Water should not come in contact with the motor. Ensure there is sufficient space from other objects to allow cooling airflow.

2) If the pump is located below the water level then isolation valves will need to be installed.

3) For gluing pipes ensure correct pressure pipe priming fluid and solvent cement is used as per the manufacturers’ instructions.

Many clients who have existing AC powered pumps choose to install their solar pump in parallel with their existing pump. The benefit of this type of installation is that in the event of a pool problem like water turning green due to chlorine or chemistry imbalance, the AC pump can be swtiched on and run for 24 !48 hours to filter the water around the clock until the chemistry problem is resolved. With an existing AC pump already in place, the cost to keep it there in a parallel installation is nominal.
