The word “Epiphany” comes from a Greek verb meaning "to reveal," and all of the various events histor- ically celebrated by the Feast of the Epiphany are revelations of Christ to man. It was first celebrated in the Eastern Church, where it has been held from the beginning al- most universally on January 6. Epiphany originally celebrated four different events, in the following order of importance: (1) the Bap- tism of the Lord; (2) Christ's first miracle, the changing of water into wine at the wedding in Cana; (3) the Nativity of Christ; and (4) the visita- tion of the Wise Men or Magi. Each of these is a revelation of God to man: at Christ's Baptism, the Holy Spirit descends and the voice of God the Father is heard, declaring that Jesus is His Son; at the wedding in Cana, the miracle reveals Christ's divinity; at the Na- tivity, the angels bear witness to Christ, and the shepherds, repre- senting the people of Israel, bow down before Him; and at the visit- ation of the Magi, Christ's divinity is revealed to the Gentiles–the other nations of the earth. Eventu- ally, Epiphany came to mark the end of Christmastide–the Twelve Days of Christmas, which began with the revelation of Christ to Is- rael in His Birth and ended with the revelation of Christ to the Gen- tiles at Epiphany.

the priest.” – St Francis Assisi

ing the winter months will take place with Collection Boxes located in the parish plaza after all Masses next weekend January 14-15 and the following weekend of January 21-22.

LITURGICAL SEASONS Have you already taken down your Christ-mas tree and put away your decorations? If so, you did it early! This Tuesday is ac-tually the last day of the Christmas Li-

turgical Season. This also means that Ordinary Time begins on Tuesday and will continue through Tuesday, February 28, the day before Ash Wednes-day, which marks the beginning of Lent, and it will then resume when the Easter Season ends on June 5, the Monday following Pentecost Sunday.

Besides each of the liturgical seasons of the year that have their own distinctive character, there re-mains in the yearly cycle thirty-three or thirty-four weeks in which no particular aspect of the mystery of Christ is celebrated, but rather the mystery of Christ is honored in its fullness, especially on Sundays. This period is known as Ordinary Time! But Ordinary Time is not very ordinary at all! In Ordinary Time, the cele-bration of Sunday, is the identifying mark of the Christian community which comes together, remem-bering that on the first day of the week the Lord of Life was raised up and creation at last came to comple-tion. The liturgical color during Ordinary Time is green, the color of hope and life eternal!

This presentation reflects on Jesus' answer to our suffering by taking it upon himself in his abandonment on the cross. His cry: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" did not explain human suffering but rather transformed it into love. In Him, with Him, and through Him we can transform our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual suffering.

In this presentation, participants will learn: How to recognize and love Jesus in our suffering How to entrust our concerns to the Father How to keep on loving God and others beyond our suffering

Join us on Thursday evening, January 19, as we view and discuss the eighth episode in Bishop Robert Barron's new DVD Series: Catholicism: The Pivotal Players.

In Episode 8 we will continue the focus on the in-teresting life of Blessed John Henry Newman: The Convert, one of the greatest theologians since Thomas Aquinas, and whose search for the Truth brought him to the Catholic Church. All adults are welcome. No admission charge! This new DVD pro-gram is a multi-part film series that highlights a hand-ful of saints, artists, mystics, and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church but changed our lives and the course of civilization.
