FEATURED NEWS

One Faith, One Parish, My Share We are currently in the second year of an effort to increase our regular parish offertory income. Below are the figures for last month, compared to those of the prior May. As you see, the figures for last month were not good. No obvious reason that this should be so — no extraordinary contribution in 2016 that skewed the figure for last year or anything like that. The fact of the mat-ter is that parish finances continue to be a challenge for us as a down-town parish. We do not have families that have been here for many gen-erations; we do not have people in the neighborhood who have settled down with a thirty year mortgage for the long haul. We live in a highly mobile society, and that affects our parish more than it does most others. Sometimes, those who have moved out have been supporting the parish faithfully, but it takes a while for those mov-ing in to begin doing so. This highlights the importance of those who are attending Mass here to register as parishioners and become supporting members of the parish.

FROM THE RECTOR

Dear Friends in Christ:

Last Sunday, we celebrated the great feast of Pentecost. The First Reading for Pentecost is always the passage from the Acts of the Apostles that de-scribes the Holy Spirit coming upon the Apostles. It includes an account of the miracle of tongues that took place on that day: We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopota-mia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God.

In that moment, the Church was given a clear sign that the Gospel would be preached in every language, inviting people from every cul-ture of the world to be united in faith in the Lord Jesus.

That message has a special resonance in our parish. In fact, we have parishioners who have grown up speaking many different languages. But very obviously, we are a bilingual parish with Masses being cele-brated every Sunday in English and in Spanish. Pentecost is always a special feast for us!

And next Sunday will be as well. Next Sunday, we will celebrate the Solemnity of Corpus Christi (“The Body of Christ”). On this feast, we give solemn thanks for the gift of Himself that the Lord Jesus has left us by giving us His true Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Eucharist. Catholics of different cultures have their particular customs and devo-tions . . . but the love of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is central to the identity of Catholics of every language and culture.

And here at the Cathedral Parish, we have a very beautiful custom of expressing our unity in love for Jesus in the Eucharist – a joint Eucharis-tic Procession.

The procession leaves St. Patrick’s Church at the conclusion of 11:00 Mass with Bishop Morlino. We process to the State Street entrance of the Capitol, where we are joined by people coming from the 11:00 Span-ish Mass at Holy Redeemer. After remarks by the Bishop, we process down State Street and into Holy Redeemer Church for Benediction.

We have not had the grand version of the Corpus Christi procession for the last couple of years. Last year, Corpus Christi fell on Memorial Day weekend, and the Capitol Square was closed all day for a race. Two years ago, the procession was rained out. Long-range forecast for next Sunday looks pretty favorable at the moment! Plan to come to celebrate Corpus Christi, and our unity in Our Eucharistic Lord.

Msgr. Kevin D. Holmes

Young Adult Brunch This Sunday Our June brunch will be held this Sunday, June 11th, after the 11:00 am Mass at St. Patrick. Although normally held the first Sunday of each month, the brunch was postponed one week so as not to conflict with Confirmation last Sunday. Cash donations to help defray the cost of the brunch are greatly appreciated.

Theology on Tap—Thursday, June 29th

Theology on Tap is a monthly speaker series where 20s & 30s are invited to join us for engaging talks by some of the leading thinkers, speakers, educators, innovators, and activists in the nation as they share their in-sights on various contemporary issues facing young adults today. The next TOT gathering will be Thursday, June 29th, when Marcella Burke will give a presentation entitled The Magnanimous Madisonian. Marcella began the young adult ministry at the Cathedral Parish in 2006 and is currently an energy attorney at Akin Gump LLP in Houston. She was named the 2017 Houston Outstanding Lawyer of the Year by the Houston Young Lawyer’s Association. Marcella is involved with national and state-wide campaigns and elections. She is currently a co-chair of a PAC that engages young professionals in national campaigns and elections.

To receive email updates about Young Adult activities in our parish, please contact Marc Laudonio at 257-5000 or [email protected].
