REMINDER! Warm Weather Dress: Modesty

Please be mindful of modesty when dressing for church services. One’s attire should not distract from another’s prayer. Appropriate apparel should not be tight-fitting or revealing. Our attention should be focused towards the Lord. Thank you for your attention to this issue!

DON’T FORGET! Pastoral Council Meeting

The Pastoral Council will meet this Thursday, June 2, at 6:00pm at St. Barnabas (in the basement). Refreshments will be served. If you have any matters that you would like the council to address, please let Father Jerabek or a council member know.

NEW! Josh’s Ordination – Congratulations

We offer hearty congratulations to Deacon Josh Altonji, ordained this weekend (Saturday, May 28 in Huntsville)! Deacon Josh will be going to Mexico for the month of June to continue studying Spanish. We wish him a good summer as he begins ordained ministry in the Church! Let us continue to pray for him as he prepares for priesthood ordination a year from now!

NEW! “I Love America” Patriotic Concert

Everyone is invited to a fun, patriotic birthday celebration for our nation! St. Aloysius Church will host its 4th Annual “I Love America” concert on Friday, June 24 at 7:00pm. Combined choirs will lead the audience in many popular patriotic songs. Joining the choir will be the Waylighters Gospel Quartet and Voices of the South Barbershop Chorus. Come see a tribute to our armed forces as the Lake View American Legion Post 2011 presents the Colors and Service Flags from each branch of the military and the P.O.W. There is no charge for this entertaining and inspiring evening. St. Aloysius Church is located at 751 Academy Drive in Bessemer.

NEW! Thank You, Frederick! Welcome, Kenny!

Frederick Pollman, our Sunday organist for nearly a year now, has taken a position at St. Stephen’s University Chapel in Birmingham and so will no longer be playing for us on Sundays. We thank him for his talented service!

We also welcome Kenny (Kenneth) Sutton, who is taking Frederick’s place. Kenny is an accomplished local musician. We are happy to welcome him to Holy Rosary on a stable basis for our Sunday liturgies!

On Sat., June 4 at 11:00am at the Cathedral of St. Paul, two of our diocesan seminarians will be ordained to the priesthood: Deacon Jim Handerhan and Deacon Wyman Vintson. All are invited to attend! Please pray for Deacons Jim and Wyman as they make the final spiritual preparations for this wonderful new chapter of their vocational journey!

NEW! Father Jerabek Time Away

Father Jerabek will travel to see his family in New Hampshire, including a recently-born niece, June 6-13. During that time all schedules will remain the same and Masses will be covered by Monsignor O’Connor and the Franciscans. Please pray for safe travel!

God Bless America

MEMORIAL DAY WISHES

We thank all of our Veterans and we remember in a particular way all those who gave their lives in the service of our beloved nation.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Welcome, Daniel Sessions!

Daniel officially joins us today, Sunday, May 29, and will be with us until the end of June. From there he will go to St. Paul’s for a couple of weeks before going to World Youth Day in Poland! We welcome Daniel to the Holy Rosary family. I encourage all to invite him over for a meal or otherwise make him feel welcome and supported. Daniel is a Birmingham native and a graduate of John Carroll Catholic High School. He will be going to continue his seminary studies in Washington, DC this fall.

REMINDER! American Flag Reverent Disposal

This is a time of year when many realize they need a new American Flag and their old one needs to be retired. Remember to treat that old flag with respect. Bring it in and place it in the box in back of the church. The flags collected will be burnt in a proper ceremony. Thank you!

CATHOLIC VOCABULARY

This Week’s Term: SCRUPLE SPOON

A “scruple spoon” is a very small ladle-like spoon that is used to place only a drop of water in the chalice when the wine and water are mixed at the Offertory during Holy Mass. The scruple spoon’s use is very uncommon today, though it is still seen in some places. The name suggests that it was used because of scrupulosity on the part of the priest about how much water he put in the wine. But, in fact, it simply made it easier to put only a small amount of water in (as the rubrics require) and not have to worry about over-pouring. In fact, if the priest were to dilute the wine too much, it would no longer be considered true wine and thus the consecration would not happen! At a time when the Precious Blood was almost never distributed to the people, such that the priest only put a very small amount of wine in the chalice just for himself, using the scruple spoon was a very practical way of doing things right and well.

Dominican Nuns Vocation Retreat
