DESCRIPTION

I HEART this image of the Periodic Table. http://i.imgur.com/XFpAX.jpg It is a great way to look at each elements because there are pictures that represent real life examples of how they are used! Actual image is on the next slide.

Families on the Periodic TableElements on the periodic table can be

grouped into families/groups based on their chemical properties (AND valence electrons).

Each family/group has a specific name based on reactivity to different elements.

H has no family members (). Hydrogen is is a non-metal.

White and malleable

Reactive, but less than Alkali metals

TRANSITION METALSGroups in the

middle

Good conductors of heat and electricity.

Some are used for jewelry (malleable)

The transition metals are able to put up to 32 electrons in their second to last shell.

Can bond with many elements in a variety of shapes.

BORON FAMILY Group 33 electrons in the

outer shell (Valence electrons)

Most are metalsBoron itself though

is a metalloid (which means it has metal like properties)

CARBON FAMILY Group 44 electrons in the

outer shellContains metals,

metalloids, and a non-metal Carbon (C)

*Make sure you check the large Periodic table to see if the element you are looking for is a metal, non-metal, gas or metalloid
