Will deliver the message today.
Somebody? Anybody?
There is a wonderful little story that appears in various forms and
with various titles. I like this version…
That’s Not My Job
This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody,
Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done
and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody
could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry
about that, because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought
Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody
wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody
when Nobody did what Anybody could have.
In the life of faith, we believe God made Everybody capable of
doing a ministry of some sort. Nobody is capable of doing every-
thing. Anybody can make a difference in the life of Somebody.
Will Somebody do anything?
Some of the ministries are behind the scenes and administrative in
nature. Those who do them may be using their skills with numbers
or bricks and mortar to serve Christ. Some of the ministries are
relational in nature. Those who serve in this way will be touching
lives either here inside the church or building bridges to those be-
yond the walls of the church.
The questions are these:
If “everybody” is equipped by God for ministry, what are you
doing?
If you say “Somebody should do something,” will you be
“Somebody”?
If you won’t help will “anybody”?
If “Nobody” does it. Can we really be called the “BODY” of
Christ?
In the days to come, with Mission Fair, Ministry Surveys and Stew-
ardship, I hope you will hear the call to come and be someone who
will serve our Lord.
Grace and peace,

Donna Meador called the meeting to order at 6:30 and welcomed everyone to the meeting.
Donna Meador had sent an e-Mail message to the council members earlier today about coming prepared to
share a favorite scripture verse and why it is meaningful for you. Many members shared passages. They
included John 3:16, Matthew 7:12, Galatians 5:14, Romans 12:3, 2 Timothy 1:7, Matthew 6:11, Hebrews
4:14-16, 1 Corinthians 10:13, John 1:1-5, and 2 Corinthians 3:4-5.
Donna then started a time of LOVING around the room in which prayer concerns specifically for council
members were shared. Prayer requests included Dark Horse 3rd Marine Battalion serving in Afghanistan as
they have lost 12 members in the last four days, family members with injuries, students returning to college,
family and dear friends in the hospital or with other health concerns, the accident victim last Friday was a
sorority sister of Julie Meador. Praises included strong friendships we have knowing that we can call and
they will be there, and the support our youth group gives to each other. We will continue to lift each other
up. Kay Burney then closed this time with prayer.
Donna then asked that the minutes of the July 21, 2014 meeting be approved. Buddy Bowles made a mo-
tion that the minutes be accepted. Clyde Tharp seconded the motion and the minutes were approved.
Donna then stated that she had not gotten with Willard this past month concerning the Consent Agenda Re-
ports.
Donna next asked Buddy Bowles to go over the new business items in the Trustees Committee report availa-
ble in the room as this was sent out after the original sent report.
Buddy Bowles made the motion to accept Republic’s bid over that of Waste Management for trash removal
service. Larry Crouch seconded the motion and the motion was approved.
Buddy Bowles stated that the bid from Christian Brothers to replace the roof on the parsonage is approxi-
mately $ 1,000 less than the bid from Master’s. Buddy made the motion to accept the Christian Brothers bid
to replace the roof.
Church Council Minutes Cont.
Clyde Tharp seconded the motion and the motion was approved. Buddy added that the price may in-
crease if wood needs to be replaced.
Buddy Bowles next discussed the property and liability insurance for the church. It was found that the
stained glass windows were underinsured. Buddy made the motion to change coverage to Brotherhood
Mutual. Jim Coots seconded the motion and the motion was approved.
Buddy Bowles next presented an update on the roof of the youth building. Spray-Tec has submitted a
bid for approximately $ 16,000. The Trustees Committee is checking with another company. At this
time, we do not know of any leaks.
Clyde Tharp made a motion that the Consent Agenda Reports be accepted with the addition from the
Trustees Committee. Larry Crouch seconded the motion and the Consent Agenda Reports were accepted
as amended.
Donna next had the pulled items from the Consent Agenda and other discussion items addressed.
Clyde Tharp made the recommendation from the Finance Committee that money from the 2nd Mile Giv-
ing Fund be used to pay for the roof at the parsonage. David Pratt seconded the recommendation and it
was approved.
Clyde Tharp presented another recommendation. The Finance Committee asks the council to affirm re-
establishing the practice of acknowledging the receipt of memorials in the CrossTalk newsletter as a way
to inspire giving. The Finance Committee also asks the council to affirm re-establishing the practice of
publishing the use of pastor’s discretionary funds to stimulate giving. Buddy Bowles seconded both rec-
ommendations and both were affirmed.
Donna next had Donald Durden give the Treasurer’s Report. Donald stated that we have taken in $
5,000 more than last year and spent $ 26,600 less than last year. He noted that line 54 is the total
amount we are holding for other groups (i.e. children, youth, memorials) and there is $ 178K we can do
something with in that amount. The last three pages of the report tell about the building fund reconcilia-
tion (amounts requested be returned and transferred). Clyde Tharp stated on behalf of the Finance
Committee that Donald did a superb job of reconciling and transferring funds from the building fund.
Clyde also stated that this is the first time in his tenure that he has known how much was available in
savings. Clyde added that Donald, Jeff Gaither, and he had a meeting on auditing the church finances
and they hope to have the name of a firm in September.
Donna Meador next had a couple of other items on the meeting agenda for discussion.
Donna reminded the council that the Kroger Rewards program is changing as of September 1 and that
Angela had sent this information out in the church-wide Friday update.
Donna next had a question about permission forms for Kids Korner children to ride the church bus to par-
ticipate. Trisha stated that the forms exist and have been used for several years; if Angela can’t find
them on the computer then perhaps there is a paper copy still in the church bus or van.
next asked if the church was still doing the Barnabas Pals program. The group said that this would fall
under Serve/Congregational Care chaired by Kim Aitken. David Pratt added that he believed that com-
mittee was meeting this Thursday.
Donna next informed the council that the History Committee is hosting a Homecoming Sunday on All
Saint’s Day (11/2/14). Plans are being finalized, but Bonnie Burks Gray has said that they are asking for
one combined worship service, people to testify to what the church has meant to them, and a meal fol-
lowing the service. Donna presented the recommendation of the History Committee that contingency
funding be used to provide the meat for the meal. Clyde Tharp seconded the recommendation and it was
approved.
Church Council Minutes Cont.
Donna next informed the council that Duanne Puckett had found that September 21 is National Back
to Church Sunday.
Donna then asked if there were any other items to be discussed.
Louise Pratt asked of Bill Tuttle for a status report on setting up interviews for the open position for
the Director of Children’s Ministries. Bill Tuttle stated that we have a couple applicants with two sce-
narios. One is a temporary fix and the other is long-term.
There was no Pastor’s Report in Willard’s absence.
Larry Crouch did not have anything to report as Lay Delegate.
The next meeting is September 15th.
Buddy Bowles added that the work on the Fellowship Hall can not be completed this year as there are
too many events between now and Christmas. The Trustees will have the round tables put in the
room for use.
Clyde Tharp then closed the meeting in prayer and Donna Meador adjourned the meeting at 7:26
p.m.
Respectfully Submitted,
Trisha Hobbs

Transforming Church Culture - Presenters: Rocky and Denise Wallace, the couple co-pastor Carlisle UMC in Nicholas
County, KY.
Priority: Leadership, Church Health
Idea: “The people in my new church don’t like each other. This means pretty soon, at least half of them won’t like
me!”...This transparent interactive session on how to re-start a broken or dying church focuses on toxic culture, and in-
cludes simple strategies that range from an effective visitation system to developing a leadership team that includes in its
membership the broad range of personalities and diverse perspectives in a typical church family. This session emphasizes
the servant leadership model, and empowering/equipping laity to take on more active leadership roles in the life of the
church.
Teams/Mission Development - Presenter: Patti Groot, Director of Servant Ministries of Christ UMC, Louisville, KY
Priority: Missions
Equip and empower your lay teams to be the hands and feet of Christ in you church, community and in the world. Wheth-
er it’s a hospitality team for Sunday mornings or a mission team traveling around the world, organize and develop your
teams to make a difference in the world.
• Define the mission and set goals for the team
• Develop a time line and organizational structure
• Proven methods of encouragement and team building
• Successful recruitment
• Community collaboration
• Fund raising
Increasing Your Ministry Footprint - Presenter: Rev. Derek Robinette is the Associate Pastor at St. Matthews UMC in Lou-
isville.
Priority: Evangelism, Outreach
If you stand in your church parking lot and throw a rock what would you hit? Do the people around you know who you
are and what you have to offer? Jesus first sent his disciples into their backyards in Matthew 10. Learning to reach the
people immediately around you can lead to huge breakthroughs for your church. It might bring a few more people into
your doors, but more importantly when people drive by your church they will reflect upon how you are influencing their
lives! Increasing Your Ministry Footprint will inform you on practical ways to reach out to your neighbors…whoever they
may be!
Local Mission Ministry / Hands and Feet - Presenter: Gary Baker, Missions Chair for the Kentucky Conference
Priority: Missions
Idea: It is the premise of the Hands & Feet Mission Ministry that the church will divide itself into Twelve (12) (or less de-
pending on church size) teams that will each go out one weekend in each quarter of the year and serve their local com-
munity in some prearranged project. No one person should be in the field more than once a quarter or more than four
time a year. It is the goal of the ministry to see that everyone, in the local church, participates in this ministry. The hope
is that every weekend the visible presence of Christ will be seen in the local community through the people of Christ
church. As this is a new ministry develops in the church, members should come to realize how faith produces action
which changes lives.
