PRINCIPAL NEWS Kirsty Squires
Intensive Swimming Scheme Yesterday saw the begining of the annual swimming program. Please ensure that your children come to school with swimmers, goggles, a towel and a plastic bag to put their wet clothes in when they have finished for the day. It is important that all items are clearly labelled. We are leaving school at 11:30am so we have moved lunch to 11am and recess is held when the students return to school at approximately 1:45pm. With school holidays approaching quickly the program provides invaluable lessons for all students. Year 7 Orientation Day Students moving on to a public high school in 2013 have their transition day on Wednesday. Those who will be attending KMHS need to be at the high school by 8.45am to sign in for a 9am start. The day will finish at 1.45pm so parents will need to pick their Children up by 2pm. A timetable of the day‟s activities has been distributed to the relevant students today. GATS Enrichment Day This Thursday, 6
th December John and Sebastien will be attending
the Year 5 Gosford High GATS day. I‟m sure they will have a wonderful day participating in a variety of activities with other Year 5 students. Staff Development Days Our Staff Development Day at the end of this term will be split into two sessions, with Jo Hextall who is our Best Start leader running an information session about the Literacy and Numeracy continuums and their uses in assessing students and tracking their progress. The second session will be run by Deb Still who is a teacher at Peats Ridge about the use of iPads in the classroom and their links to the curriculum and the continuums. We will be joined on the day by the staff of Peats Ridge PS and Central Mangrove PS. New NSW Australian Syllabus/Staff Development Days 2013 For parents who may be interested, the new NSW Australian syllabus is now available for viewing on the NSW Board of Studies website. The new English syllabus is due for implementation from 2014, Maths and Science in 2015 and History in 2016. Because the

introduction of the new syllabus will involve more training and development for school staff, the NSW Government has directed that an additional Staff Development Day will be added to the school calendar next year. Staff development days for 2013 will be held on 29th January, 29th and 30
th April,15
th July, 19
th and 20th December.
Presentation Day The school‟s annual Presentation Day will be held on Monday, 17
th
December, 2012. The day will begin with the formal presentation of awards at 9:30am and will run until approximately 11am at which time we will have recess. From 11:30am – 1pm we will be running a sports tabloid session where parents are welcome to stay and participate or help to run activities. At 1pm the P&C will be running a BBQ lunch. Orders for lunch have gone home today, orders and money need to be returned by Thursday, 13th December. If you would like to help with the BBQ, please contact Leanne Jones on 0417 443 960. After lunch Year 6 will be running the „S Factor‟ finale which parents are also invited to watch. It is shaping up to be a full day! Movie Day To help celebrate the end to a busy and productive year we have booked seats at the Avoca Theatre to watch a movie. The movie this year will be Madagascar 3. The cost of this excursion is $5 and includes transport to and from the theatre, movie ticket and an ice-cream. Parent Helpers‟ Afternoon Tea Over the year we are lucky enough to have the help of our parents in a variety of ways. Without this help we would not be able to run many programs, would not have the wealth of resources we have or be able to participate in many events. To say thank you for all of this help and support we are having an afternoon tea on Friday, 14
th
December beginning at 2:20pm. If you have helped in any way this year, be it helping in classrooms, transporting children, working in the canteen, helping with the many fundraising activities, cooking cakes etc please come along and let us show you just how much we appreciate and value for your contributions. PBL Mrs Cranstone and I are attending another PBL training day today. An update about the day will be included in next week‟s newsletter. Reports Student reports will be sent home on Friday, 14
th December. There
are no scheduled interviews for end of year reports, however if you have any questions please feel free to arrange a time to meet with your child‟s teacher. Year 6 Meeting There will be a Year 6 meeting next Tuesday, 11th December at 2.50pm to discuss progress for the farewell. If you are unable to attend but would like to pass on any information please contact me and I will be sure to hand it on.

2/3 News This semester 2/3 have been working on their creative writing and this term it has been a large part of our homework. Louis would like to share the piece he created. He was given the title “Time Machine” and this is what he came up with… Once, there was an eight year old boy who lived on a farm with his uncle. Every day he would walk outside and pick some corn for dinner. As the boy grew older, factories and shops were built near his farm... and this was not good for them. There was too much rubbish so the boy dug a hole to put it in. As he dug, he found a metal machine. He walked inside it, pressed some buttons and BAM everything was gone! The boy looked around; the time machine was spinning around and around. He walked outside and everything was back except... The world was rotten! Everywhere you looked, there was litter, and the blue sky was covered with thick black smoke. It smelt revolting. The boy felt horrible so he walked inside the time machine, fiddled with the knobs and ... BAM, the same thing happened again. The machine stopped, the boy walked out of the machine except he found he was back in the year 1980. He told some villagers how important it is not to litter. They told some locals about it until everyone was picking up rubbish. Everyone in the past lived happily ever after... But the future wasn’t
the same so next time you see litter, just pick it up.
Wouldn‟t we all like the opportunity to educate people from the “olden days” (1980 hehe) on how they could affect our futures. Well

P&C News Special meeting - Wednesday, 5th December A special P&C meeting has been called for tomorrow night to discuss uniform issues, as there have been problems with the ongoing supply of the girls‟ summer fabric. The use of funds from the building fund will also be discussed at this meeting. The meeting will be held in the library from 7pm. Christmas raffle Tickets were sent home today for our Christmas raffles. There are more than 60 prizes on offer, so at just $1 each, the tickets are a great opportunity to add something to your festive celebrations! If you sell all the ones you receive, pick up extras at the school office. All tickets and money must be returned by Thursday, 13th December. P&C dinner - Wednesday, 12th December 12 Have you RSVP‟d for the P&C end-of-year dinner? Everyone is invited to this social evening, which will be held at the Black Sesame restaurant at East Gosford at 7pm on Wednesday, 12th December. The meal will be BYO alcohol, and the banquet will cost $27 per person. To RSVP your attendance, please email [email protected]. HEALTH ALERT
Rubella or “German Measles” is on the move. If you or your child have a rash, temperature, joint pain and symptoms similar to a cold it may be in your best interest to visit your GP. Rubella is a viral illness that causes a skin rash and joint pains. A rubella infection is mild for most people, but it can have catastro-phic consequences for an unborn baby. If a pregnant woman con-tracts rubella, her baby is at risk of congenital rubella syndrome (CRS), which can cause severe and permanent birth defects or death. Rubella is sometimes called German measles but rubella is a differ-ent viral disease to measles. Rubella used to be uncommon in developed countries, including Australia, because of the widespread use of the rubella vaccine, but as more people opt not to be vaccinated the virus has once again become active . Symptoms of rubella About half of rubella cases are so mild that symptoms don‟t occur. If symptoms do occur, they usually appear between two and three weeks after infection. Some of the signs and symptoms of rubella may include:
Mild fever
Headache
Runny nose
Sore eyes
Skin rash
Swollen lymph nodes
Joint pains.
