There will be a small increase in instrument hire to $15 per term, a total of $60 for the year. Due to the age of the instruments repairing them is becoming very costly. We hope you understand.

Quote of the Week Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.

    Norman Vincent Peale

Did you Know? Trees were decorated with apples, cakes and candies for many centuries. Martin Luther was the first to use candles on trees in the late 16th Century. In 1842, Charles Minnegrode introduced the custom of decorating trees to the US in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Dance Our Junior Dance Group will be performing a special Christmas Dance on Monday, 17th December, during our shared lunchtime. If possible could students please bring something red, green or white to wear during the performance. It's time to get in the mood for Christmas. We look forward to showcasing our hard work. 2/3K News Could students please bring in a carry bag by Tuesday, 18th December to bring home their books and artwork? An enviro bag would be perfect for this as plastic bags may break. My 2012 - Creative writing by Teela Borrowdale In my opinion this has been a fantastic year. In the beginning I found it a bit daunting because I was changing schools but I'm glad I did it. Deciding which things I liked best was very difficult. My best friends this year have been Henna and Monet. I was friends with Henna first and it was more recently that I became friends with Monet. Two of my favourite activities this year have been independent reading and art. I love independent reading because it allows you to read whatever you want. I enjoy art because you can get really messy and it is very cool. My hobby is horse riding. I love horses a lot and I might get one of my own soon. My horse riding teacher's name in Lindy and she was the top

rider in all of Australia. On a horse I can walk, trot, rise and trot and canter. Cantering is lots of fun, it feels like flying and I'm quite good at it. In my opinion this has been an extraordinary year. A surprise has been around every corner and I have loved being at Somersby.

Laura Knight Newcastle Permanent Primary Maths Competition A number of students have received a certificate for excellent achievement in this competition. Particularly worthy of note are Casey and Nicole with distinctions, and Georgie J with a high distinction. Georgie placed 73rd out of approximately 8500 entrants. Band Students intending to participate in the band program for 2013 have the opportunity to access an instrument owned by the school depending on availability. To help offset the costs of repair, maintenance and eventual replacement, a term fee of $15 is to be paid to the school. Any queries should be addressed to the school’s office. A special thank you to Ben’s Nan, Peta Daly, for kindly donating a clarinet to the school. This kind gesture will each year give students the opportunity to learn a musical instrument.

In the Spot Light 2013 Year 7 Orientation Day Last Wednesday, a few Year 6 students including myself, travelled to Kariong Mountains High School for an orientation day. We interacted with other students from different schools as well as the high school attendants. The day was fun, educational and enjoyable. Nicole On Wednesday, 5th December I travelled to Gosford High School to attend an orientation day. It was a good chance for me to meet some other students and make some new friends. I think I will enjoy being a student at Gosford High School because they have a variety of activities to participate in. Georgie J My high school is Narara Valley High. I got in the CAPA class so I was separated from all the other classes. My orientation was really fun and I had a great time. My favourite part was just meeting all my new friends and teachers but also being accompanied by children from 25 different schools. Ricki My name is Blake and I went to Narara Valley High School’s orientation day. At my orientation day we saw performances and we talked about our camp. We chose the people we will be with. I can’t wait until next year. Blake Transition Elliot likes going to Henry Kendall High School and doing may activities throughout his day. He has met new people and new teachers who he will have in 2013. Elliot has got to know the school and its surroundings during this time. His favourite part of the day is interacting with the twins who are in his class and having lunch and recess with them. Year 5 GATS Day (gifted and talented students) Last Friday we went to a GATS day to participate in four activities: cooking, photography, science and agriculture. First we went to agriculture and we saw alpaca, sheep, chickens and cows. Next we went to photography where we made black and white photos with special paper and chemicals.
