1 Song: Music Along Shall Live Theme: Music for Life E-NEWS NOTES- October 2020 President’s Notes Describing the current situation our world is experiencing is difficult – COVID-19 pandemic, wildfires, floods, hurricanes – and yet the world is still making music! It is no surprise that musicians around the world are finding creative ways to participate in music - from experimenting with virtual technologies, live streaming concerts, Zooming recitals, to playing music outside at a safe distance. The healing power of music is being witnessed throughout all walks of life. Understanding that it is essential we continue to stay connected with our membership; we too are learning new ways of communicating. Collaborating via Zoom, Go-to-Meeting, Skype, and Facetime have all become the functions of everyday life. Area festivals are exploring how to conduct virtual or hybrid(both live & recorded) events. District and Senior Club meetings are being conducted on a regular basis via Zoom. Several Senior Clubs are utilizing technology to present live stream recitals. Kudos to all of you for striving to meet the challenges before us! Are you looking to expand performance opportunities and new ways to engage your students and musical colleagues in a safe environment? Both NFMC and FFMC offer awards and events that can be accomplished via online applications and auditions. With all the social unrest and the health concerns of the Coronavirus, who knows what January will look like? Can the event be held outdoors in chilly north Florida weather? Will the museum and park be open for business? So many thoughts. Hence, the committee felt it would be in the best interest to postpone the 2021 event. It has always been a wonderful historical event that both the Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center and the Florida Federation have shared for past 69 years. We are so proud of our contestants who have gone on to have great careers in voice performance. We will continue to write updates in the Sharps and Flats. We will highlight our former winners in the coming months. Remember, we have our 2020 Jeanie, Nicole Carrion and 2020 Stephen, Adam Benton who would be most happy to put on a program for your music club.

Note the deadline is extended to November 1, 2020. OPTION: Include $50 more for individual senior membership as an alternative to the local senior club dues. Senior dues are $10.00 per member with $5 donation to Student Scholarship Fund and $5 toward the Past Presidents’ Fund ($110 minimum for 10 members or less). Deadline: November 1.     2021 FFMC FRANCES RANDS BEERY BALLET AWARDS

    DANCE PLAQUE AWARD The Dr. Isabella Laude Dance Plaque is awarded biennially at the state convention to the senior club doing the most to promote dance. Schedule a dance program for your senior club now and become eligible TO WIN this plaque PLUS $100 CASH! So please include dance in your club programs! (Next award given in 2021.) Eligible programs include international, classical, folk, or modern dance programs; awarding prizes or scholarships to dance students, having dance exercises, book reviews or other types of programs promoting dance.

    Saturday, April 10, 2021 10:00 am Lakeland, Florida

    Male and female ballet students between the ages of 12 and 18 are invited to apply for the 2021 FFMC Frances Rands Beery Ballet auditions. Awards available: First $750, Second $250, Honorable Mention $25 Students must perform two dances including one combination en pointe from classical ballet performed in leotard and one variation in costume (contemporary or original), plus demonstration of basic techniques. Winners also receive a plaque and a sketch of the career of Frances Rands Beery, an international premier ballerina, who was a member of the Lake Wales Music Club and Dance Chairman of the Florida Federation of Music Clubs. The awards were endowed in her memory by Lake Wales Arts Council. Entry fee and completed application must be sent to the chairman, Dr. Monica Laude, postmarked no later than March 1, 2021.     Federation Cup Report 2020 Lisa Moore, Chair

    FFMC festivals once again had strong participation in the NFMC Federation Cup plan. Our juniors have earned over 1,350 cups in total. Congratulations to all our hard-working juniors! The first 15-point cup typically represents three years of achievement. Students who continue in the cup plan build up more points. They will earn the 30-point cup in another three or so years. The NFMC Bulletin explains options for combining for those students in grade 9 and above in order to possibly earn the Grand Cup or President Cup by their senior year in high school. Here is the breakdown:

Kenneth Donald Baar – 1926-2020 – Bradenton, Florida Faith-Marie Blais – 1943-2020 – Sarasota, Florida Dr. Lev Isaacovich Gurevich – d. September 18, 2020 - Winter Park, Florida

    Revered violin teacher, Dr. Lev Isaacovich Gurevich, was a beacon of classical music performance and instruction in the Central Florida community, he was loved by all his students and colleagues but most of all by his beloved wife, Michele Gurevich and his son Michael "Misha" Gurevich.

    As a violin teacher, he taught students of all ages for 40 years. Over the decades he coached and inspired his students to become professional orchestra players, concertmasters, and international competition winners.

    Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, a private funeral will take place at Ohev Shalom Cemetery in Orlando with Rabbi Arnold Siegel of Jewish Family Services officiating.
