Introduction & Overview

For our EMPACTS project, our team partnered with a Springdale

Elementary school, Sonora Elementary, and their P.T.A. to raise funds

for playground equipment and other basic needs of the scholars at

Sonora. The school opened in August of 2011. In their district, as in

many others, schools are not provided a playground when they are

constructed. It is up to the school and it’s P.T.A. to raise the money to

have playgrounds installed. In conjunction with the school, we aided in

one fundraiser: Owl You Need is Love Family Fun Night. We also hosted

three other events: Easter Bunny Pics, Zumba and an Artfully Owlish

Event-Art Auction and Spaghetti Dinner. We have a group goal of

raising $1000 in our partnership with the PTA.

Project Objectives

• Service to the Community: Our project is providing a service to the community through

helping a local public school, Sonora Elementary, in their fundraising efforts to build a

playground for their students as well as members of the community. We collaborated with

the Sonora Elementary P.T.A. and administration throughout the project and have engaged

the public to aid in our fundraising efforts. We received donations from local businesses

and used media to help aid our fundraising efforts.

• Technology: We used many forms of technology for the project. When not in class, we

communicated primarily through email, text and shared our work through Google Drive. We

also put documents into a LiveBinder account as well. We used a Nikon DSLR camera to

take pictures for fundraising and to document our project. Various computer programs

were also used for flyers, brochures, logs and QR code for flyer.

• Skills we developed: Delegation, collaboration, problem-solving and partner support skills.

We each became more familiar with different types of technology. We also learned how to

communicate more effectively with our peers as wells as professionally with community

organizations. We have also organized three fundraising events.

Owl You Need is Love

This was our first fundraising event. We had a photo booth at the Owl You Need is Love Family Fun Night on February 8. We took photos for $2 each and raised close to $80.

Easter Bunny Pics The Easter Bunny visited Sonora Elementary on March 29 and we were

there to capture it all! We took 249 pictures and were able to raise close to $500 while putting smiles on hundreds of little faces!

Zumba We held a Zumba Fitness Event on April 22 at Sonora Elementary from

4:30-6:30. Instructor Carlos Hernandez donated his time for the Fitness instruction, Papa Rap came out and we all got a great workout! We charged $5 per person and Sonora scholars were free. We raised $55.

Conclusion • Amanda Wheeler- This opportunity to help my community gave me a strong sense of pride. I am

very glad that Cara asked for assistance. She has been amazing and very patient. Doug and Teri have stretched themselves to help a school in need as well (and even former member, Bethany) The three events that we partnered with Sonora Elementary for went better than I could have imagined. Our final event, "An Artfully Owlish Event," that we are hosting, is quickly approaching and I have nothing but high hopes and tall demands for a successful outcome! I have to say, it will be nice to breathe after our projects are over, yet I will leave while patting everyone on the back for a job well done! Thank you "Team Sonora!"

• Bethany Wood- I was really surprised with how much effort everyone put into this project. In most of my experience with group projects, everyone tries to get by with the bare minimum, but this group went above and beyond and got so much done and put so much time and effort into this project in such little time. I'm so glad to see that we were able to help out Sonora. If I had to do anything differently, I would probably try to have one specific event instead of several events spread out through the semester.

• Cara Maxwell-Overall I really enjoyed getting to know my team and working with them. It amazed me that they were so willing to help out the scholars at Sonora. My boys attend Sonora, but the others had no connection. They went above and beyond on this project and I am proud that we have been able to do so much. We still have one more event to go but I am confident it will be a success because of the work my team has put into it. If I had to do anything differently, it would be focus on just one main project. In all we had four events that we either helped with or did on our own. That is a lot to do in one semester.

Page 16: Sonora Elementary - NWACCfaculty.nwacc.edu/EAST_original/Spring 2013/Introduction to Education... · Project Objectives • Service to the Community: Our project is providing a service

Conclusion continued... • Doug Denmark-I enjoyed working with my fellow team members. I feel that we put together a pretty

good group. A lot of great ideas for fundraising projects besides the Zumba class and Art Auction were discussed and as the only male member of Team Sonora I truly felt that my ideas and suggestions were not ignored. If I could do it all over again, I would have to agree that focusing our efforts on one project would be the way to go. For the most part I am happy that I was able to help and only wish I could have done more. Even if means putting on the rabbit suit again. Thanks to Cara, Amanda, Teri and Bethany for including me in Team Sonora. Hoot Owls Hoot! • Teri Spivey- This project has been ben both time consuming and inspiring. I think overall our team has worked together to do a great service to provide funds for this School. Though my children do not attend Sonora Elementary, I know how important it is for children to have a safe place to release their energy! I am proud to have been part of this experience. I am also thankful to be a part of a team that truly cared about the outcome and success of our mission! We did not have major conflicts or a team member who did not contribute in some area to complete our goal. Thank You to Team Sonora for working together as a team and making our project a success. We all have reason to be proud...raising $600 to benefit this school was not picnic in the park...It will be great to see the success of tonight's Auction and add that to our total ... Go Team Sonora Hoot-Hoot we collected some loot! A big Thank You to Sonora Elementary for Partnering with us and all of our contributors and supporters...we could not have done it without you all! I think the only thing different I would have done is to choose event and put all focus on it , having atotal of 4 events for this project, school, work, and a second empacts project was a bit much for one semester! Thankfully ...we have made it through and I am Proud to be a part of Team Sonora
